Side note about Freddie Mercury: " A study by Austrian, Czech, and Swedish researchers released in 2016 concluded that Freddie Mercury had a rare and unique singing voice. The study stated that Mercury likely employed subharmonics, in which the ventricular folds vibrate along with the vocal folds. Most human vocal patterns never use the ventricular folds, with the exception of Tuvan throat singers. In addition, Mercury's vocal cords just moved faster than other people's. While a typical vibrato will fluctuate between 5.4 Hz and 6.9 Hz, Mercury's was 7.04 Hz. To look at that in a more scientific way, a perfect sine wave for vibrato assumes the value of 1, which is pretty close to where famous opera singer Luciano Pavarotti sat. Mercury, on the other hand, averaged a value of 0.57, meaning he was vibrating something in his throat even Pavarotti couldn't move."

Bohemian Rhapsody is a song about coming out, letting go of the previous persona he put on for everybody. The man he killed was himself, the heterosexual he was so he could fit into the world. As he found himself (bisexual) he was also becoming successful as an artist, "life had just begun, but now I've gone and thrown it all away", and feared that as people found out about his sexuality his career would be over. Very difficult to come out back then, "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all".
Treatment of gays was and can still be harsh, "so you think you can stone me and spit in my eye, so you think you can love me then leave me to die": after finding out I'm not straight like you? "Just gotta get right out of here".
Accepting his reality and in an effort to not be affected by the situation he feigns "nothing really matters to me, any way the wind blows", indeed.
    RIP Freddie, and thanks.

I had suspected for a long time that this song was reactive and about his illness later in his life ("just killed a man" = killed himself - it's a pretty compelling song taken from that point of view) - but according to this video (your explanation makes it much more clear) he wrote it early, and it's positive and totally different.

And as a long time Queen fan, been listening to & loving their music for the past 31 years, I get rather perturbed when those who don’t agree with his lifestyle say it written about him giving HIV to all the men he slept with. They say that’s what they mean by mama, just killed a man. First, HIV/AIDS hadn’t emerged or been heard of when he wrote the song. Second, he was still with Mary then & had not yet come out as bisexual/gay. He may have had urges he didn’t understand then, but he had not realized at the time what that meant.

This world was blessed to have Freddie Mercury in it. And not only because of the incredible talent he had.
I believe so many people would still be pretending to be someone they weren’t, just so they would have a chance to get somewhere in the world.
In Rhapsody, you can hear the emotional pain he was in. When asked, in interviews, what the song was about...what it meant, he lied. In at least one interview, he said Rhapsody was a combination of many songs that he had written over the years.
It makes me sad that he felt that he had to hide his truth.
And of course, he was a huge reason for people opening their eyes to a “new” killer called AIDS. His death helped save many lives because people took notice. He did not die in vain.
Thank you Freddie for sharing your incredible talent with us. Thank you for helping in the fight against “hate”. I don’t know if you knew that you were doing that. Maybe none of us knew it, at the time.
I hope that someday I will hear you sing - face to face.

Intelligence and true talent that Freddie learned to play music upside down while lying in bed. He had a piano as the headboard of his bed and, when inspired, would reach back and play what he'd heard in his dreams. His vocal range was so impressive that in 2016 it even inspired a team of European scientists. He poured his heart out into the songs. They’re whimsical. They’re ethereal at times. They’re painful. He was a charismatic genius, not afraid to go after what he wanted. Freddie inspired not only as a writer and as a musician and as a performer but ultimately as a man. He died young, he lived his life to the full and he crammed in an amazing amount of music. More than most people could in five lifetimes. What a brave and courageous man. He never dies because he lives in his songs and our hearts. Love you...Xoxox ❤

Dickie I have to believe that Tina is stating a fact, not an opinion.
      Ask any composer that question...
"Is Freddie Mercury one of the best composers ever?"
      ...2/3 or 4/5 times, they'll say yes!
They might not necessarily like what he has composed,
but they'd respect it! Add in his Stage Presence,
his Vocal abilities, and his Professionalism in his Performance Skills...
how can you not say he's very talented? The proof is there!
I can see how you would feel that OPINION is involved here, though!
In my opinion, Beethoven was one of the most talented composers ever, also.
Well, most people would agree with that!
Wouldn't that lead to the assumption that THAT would be a fact?
      If Everyone agrees on something,
that would inevitably lead to it being accepted as a fact!
Plus the proof that exists that shows us he was...
(Even though it IS Opinion) but with everyone agreeing... :-)
Most people believe in God, because a few books say so!
      Well, Where's the Proof?
How do we know that there is a supreme being?
We just accept it! ...because a few books say so!
      and most everybody believes it, therefore it's fact... W R O N G ! ! !
There's no proof that there IS a God,
You know, this invisible man who lives in the sky who also, by the way,
needs all your cash! Religious Dogma, right?
"Freddie was ONE OF the most talented people EVER!"

    "Bohemian Rhapsody"
    Is this the real life?
    Is this just fantasy?
    Caught in a landslide,
    No escape from reality.
    Open your eyes,
Look up to the skies and see,
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy,
Because I'm easy come, easy go,
    Little high, little low,
Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me.
    Mama, just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead.
    Mama, life had just begun,
But now I've gone and thrown it all away.
    Mama, ooh,
Didn't mean to make you cry,
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters.
Too late, my time has come,
    Sends shivers down my spine,
    Body's aching all the time.
Goodbye, everybody, I've got to go,
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.
Mama, ooh (any way the wind blows),
    I don't wanna die,
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all.
I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?
    Thunderbolt and lightning,
    Very, very frightening me.
    (Galileo) Galileo.
    (Galileo) Galileo,
    Galileo Figaro
    Magnifico-o-o-o-o.
I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me.
He's just a poor boy from a poor family,
Spare him his life from this monstrosity.
Easy come, easy go, will you let me go?
Bismillah! No, we will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let me go!)
Will not let you go. (Let me go!)
Never let you go (Never, never, never, never let me go)
    Oh oh oh oh
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
Oh, mama mia, mama mia (Mama mia, let me go.)
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me.
So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye?
So you think you can love me and leave me to die?
Oh, baby, can't do this to me, baby,
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here.
    (Ooooh, ooh yeah, ooh yeah)

    Anyone can see,

    Nothing really matters to me.

Makes so much sense when you think about it. I followed Freddie Mercury's life story over the years He was the Queen of the stage where he portrayed himself to be one magnificent performer. He learned to accept himself for who he was,it was the world (other than his fans) that he felt like he was a cast over shadow to,he hid his true self away from the public eye so he could be Himself!! He gave us all the gift of his music and a chance to know at least that much about him. Behind closed doors he was just the man behind his music and had a love for his cats and his family.

It depends on the composer. I wrote the lyrics to Let it Go and the scripts for the first two seasons of Glow (Netflix) and Lucifer plus the bulk of what became La La Land (plus a lot of other stuff) in about 4 days and only redrafted once. Some people need more than that and need extra time and input to refine their vision. For me I was told my hayfever tablets might kill me prematurely when I was 18 and the apparently dead end job I was doing felt like there was no escape unless I made it myself. Necessity was not the mother of invention for me talent, boredom, escapism and an education in economics (I am one of the few people who correctly predicted 2008) were all contributory factors. I can't speak for Freddie and nor could or should I want to. Sometimes an individual experiences something (or series of somethings) that they feel the need to communicate about then they adopt a chosen medium and it becomes art. Then they refine the art to a point where they become a master craftsman if that's their desire. In Freddie's case he had extra teeth that helped his resonance and vocal range but there are lots of people with talent ultimately practice hard work and perseverance are usually what gets recognised. In terms of writing Queen were the first band to use 16 tracks (4 tracks each into a 4 track tape recorder). How you write is ultimately up to you, some start from the lyrics to suggest the chords and solos; some start by writing the chord progression and writing lyrics over the top;others still start with a guitar riff and go from there. Brilliance takes many forms and none involving autotune.

Joe Famous Is no one realising the fact that the lines about killing a man was written in the late 1960s as a cowboy-themed song? Freddie wasn't gay at the time that part was written, so how could it mean he was coming out? And if you want to claim that he's always been gay, but just suppressed it for so long, I don't think you know who Freddie Mercury was. In the late 1960s, he was already disobeying his parent's wishes and joined several rock bands, attending parties and going to clubs. He met and fell in love with a woman, Mary Austin, and was engaged with her until 1976 when he first came out. Freddie Mercury was a man known not to care what others think of him and would gladly express himself and all that he was. You're telling me that that is the same man who was gay for about 7 years before coming out and was just too ashamed to tell anyone. That doesn't sound like Freddie at all.

Jeanne Olson If you're going off of the movie itself, that isn't a valid source of information. But still, he wrote much of the song in the 60s, before he even met Mary and it was meant to be a Cowboy song, which makes it very likely to be literal. Freddie was never ashamed to be who he was. The only reason he would be ashamed of his sexuality would be to not disappoint Mary, which wouldn't be a problem before he met her, largely suggesting he wasn't gay until after they started touring, where he would go to a lot of parties and meetups with groupies backstage, both male and female.

He was a 14 year old brat who took a tape recorder in....
I was 16 and we shared the love of music.... He played it over the phone and it was instant gratification. I was living in Miami at the time and instantly got on the phone and called all the stations that play rock... No one knew what I was talking about, two weeks later they were playing it and and never let up from that time on.

Lizette Martinez I had always heard the song is about him coming to terms with his inevitable death because he knew he was sick tor a long time but kept it a secret. the part with "I see a little silhouette" is actually describing the scene of judgement day (thunderbolt and lightning/very very frightning)as he pleads with God - im just a poor boy"let me go" (He says Bis mil laah) Arabic for in the name of God as he is told no no no. then he sees Hell "Oh mama mia" and finally acknowledged he is going to hell ( a devil put aside for me)? the last uptempo section is a confrontation with the man he contracted hiv/aids from. the first line of the song is the clue Is this the real life? or is this just fantasy? and when we die the reality begins.so the reality of this world is "Nothing really matters"

One of my favorite singers from the late 60s/early 70s had an amazing hit and it was over 9 minutes long. While rare, the long song is not unheard of.
And who doesn't love Bohemian Rhapsody? Everyone stops what they are doing and sings along to the song anytime it is played.
The explanation is a bit screwy, but people make suppositions based on what they want to be true. If he had been a wife beater or a pedophile, people would not have embraced such an attitude of "I gotta be me".
And before anyone freaks out, I was making a point of there are limits to "I gotta be me".
But Freddie did make it a life work to be himself. This much we know.
His voice and his privacy gave him that slight air of mystery. He loved what he did, but I am betting he felt that the world did not own him, as so many do to famous people.

Well, yes and no. It wasn't brave for anyone to record a long song... it was a huge risk to put it out as a single, because the goal was to get it played on the radio and hit singles tended to be around 3 minutes long. The label's fear was that Bohemian Rhapsody would never get played and therefore hurt the album's potential sales. They were wrong, obviously.

The darn thing is, the only real virtuoso among them was Brian. If you put Freddie behind a screen and listened you would know he was good, but you wouldn't think GOAT. But put him on stage and WOW! Roger and John were really quite ordinary. But together they really made great music. I mean they wrote some admittedly really stupid songs (I'm looking at you Leroy Brown:), but for a stretch of 6 albums in a row, they wrote iconic songs that we'll listen to for the rest of our lives. I'm not going to try to figure it out anymore, but I'm glad I'm old enough to have had their albums with all the extra songs that you won't hear these days. For example, people know Bohemian Rhapsody and You're my Best Friend, but may never have heard Death on Two Legs, '39, Prophet's Song, Love of my Life, Good Company which are all on the same album. That side 2 is one of the best album sides going. (I know, what's an album side? - sigh)

Bohemian Rhapsody is indeed a confession but not only about his sexuality but what he had sacrificed to for his life of fame. When he is saying goodbye everybody I’ve got to go he is actually admitting he made a decision he had to live with. The sacrifice you ask was the exchange of his soul for his success. Confirmed in the hook him begging to be let go, let him out of what had already been done. Which is why he also mentioned beelzebub has a devil put aside for him, meaning he is awaiting his time for beelzebub to come collect. To me it seems he was being literal and had not understood what he was doing, also why he says it’s too late my time has come. These classic bands are going to be known until the end of time for this amazing piece. I love Queen and Freddie he is an amazing composer and musician.

I agree with what you have to say, but also, it's like a foreshadowing of his life, from the fame and the fortune, to where you can relate this song to where he loses his life and battle with AIDS in the future. Bone chilling in a sense, you can say he wrote his death song, and didn't even know it, or did he? As you say, look at the lyrics, and relate it to his life's journey,
Just a breakdown of some of his lyrics, and how it could be his foreshadowing:
Fantasy (rock star life), poor boy (he was poor growing up), killed a man (bisexual and description of how it happened HIV), too late my time has come / body's aching all the time(AIDS and eventual death), Thunderbolt and lightning very very frightening me (he was afraid of his lifestyle), Easy come easy go will you let me go
Bismillah, no we will not let you go, let him go (deal with the devil for his soul), Oh baby can't do this to me baby (he loved his life, he doesn't want to die), Nothing really matters to me
      Anyway the wind blows
(In the end, face the truth about his life, I did, I entertained, a legacy will live on.)

Vocals, melodies, writing, and showmanship (Queen at Live Aid 85 being in my opinion the best live performance EVER), Freddie definitely had more talent than anyone in the last regard, and had The Beatles continued touring after 66 I still don't think they would have achieved Queen's level of putting on a show; so in at least one regard I think Freddie outshone.
