Deep Purple: one of the "Big Four" British hard rock/heavy metal pioneers of the early 70s. The other three are Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep. The epic "Child in time" first appeared on the band's fourth studio album "In rock" (1970), which was also their first with their classic lineup: Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards, 1941-2012) and Ian Paice (drums). The band made many legendary songs, the most famous being "Smoke on the water" (1972). They would later undergo more lineup changes, and even split up from 1976 to 1984. Members of the band have since formed other legendary acts, most notably Whitesnake and Rainbow. The band exists even today, and are still very popular especially in Europe and Japan - I saw them at Sweden Rock Festival last week! - and their current lineup consists of Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Don Airey (keyboards) and Simon McBride (guitar).
