"Light of my life, fire in my loins" Lana Del Rey used this as a lyric in her 2012 song 'Off To The Races'.
Yes loved the song
mere life ki kiran, mere lund ki aag!! Lo li ta!
You are becoming a big influence on the kind of books I'm reading and I'm loving the books. Thank you.
Throughout my whole life, I've read only one banned book named "Gandi vadh kyon?" by Nathuram Godse and enjoyed reading it.
Do you have a pdf?
@Mohd. IFHAM I read a lot of stuff which I don't agree with. It is very important to understand someone else's opinion too.
@@sirfaditya I strongly agree with this reasoning.
Some banned books I know are
1)1984 by george Orwell.
2)Lady Chatterley's lover by D. H. Lawrence.
3)Brave new world by Aldous Huxley.
4) Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.
5)The grapes of wrath by John Steinbeck.
6) Candide by Voltaire.
7)Catch-22 by Joseph Heller.
8)Moby dick by Herman Melville.
9)Leaves of grass by Walt Whitman.
10)Streetcar named desire by Tennessee Williams.
11)The scarlet letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
12)Howl by Allen Ginseng.
13)The call of the wild by Jack London.
14)Invisble man by Ralph Ellison.
15)The adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.
16)In cold blood by Truman Capote.
17)Where the wild things are by Maurice sendak.
18)Green eggs and ham by Dr:Seuss
19)The absolute true diary of a part-time Indian by Sherman Alexei.
20)The kite runner by Khaled housseni.
21)Go tell it on the mountain by James Baldwin.
22)Eleanor and park by Rainbow Rowell.
23)Lord of the flies by William Golding.
24)Slaughter house 5 by Kurt Vunnegut.
25)One flew over the cuckoos nest by Ken Kesey.
These are some books which I know were banned or challenged, and I haven't read all of them but they all are on my to-read list and will be reading them all someday.
Why were candide and the adventures of huckleberry finn banned?
R u literature student..bcz these r classics mostly..n v literature student hv to read these
@@prernajoshi2961 no, i am not a literature student. I am going to be a literature student in BA. But i have read candide of voltaire and huckleberry finn. I didn't know they were banned
@@himankakingsley9865 exactly most of these books recommended in video r already in syllabus of b.a. n m.a. english or NET aspirants hv to read these
@@prernajoshi2961 are you an english student?
Lolita
To kill a mocking bird
The color purple
The awakening
Moll flanders
Frankenstein-mary
Beloved-toni
The chacter in the rye
Animal farm
The satanic verses
Lajja
The hindus
Thanks
Thnks
The style of writing in "catcher in the rye" is profound yet simple and it had so much depth . You have to be in so much pain to get it right .
Or people confuse it for many things. They don't get it .
"to kill a mockingbird" is also pure and a good book.
❤
add 'Madhurobhagan' or 'One part Woman' by Murugan Perumal, a book that was nearly banned but won the case in the Kerala high court. :)
Watched Lolita (newer version) the last week and found it to be subtlety layered with multiple character flaws and beauties. Being a precocious kid made me wonder whether I would be able to contemplate the plot’s covert details but I did after several attempts and realised what I considered to be Lolita’s consensual grant to engage in such a relationship didn’t qualify as her respective choice but mere manipulation on part of Humbart to serve his personal ends. Still it was such a gripping take on emotional ties that I cared for him in the end to elope with her somehow.
But one thing that hovered past through my head was whether she was even sublimely interested in him as a paramour. Please if you manage to get through this tiresome comment, help me comprehend the climax. Anyone- Helly or other fellows
Congratulations helly.. Following you since 300 subscribers.. Really enjoying your content these days.. You are simply amazing
sasi kumar thanks{
This is just a humble suggestion.....your content is really good.....but your Intro girl..... improve that.....😊😊
🤣🤣🤣
Intro is as in introduction not introversion😅
Paedophilia isn't really about love but sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children. And prostitution shouldn't be a crime if someone does it on their will. This is a great video. Would love to see more about banned Indian books that we may read.
Yes right i probably explained in a wrong manner :'( thanks for pointing out
Helly what is actually mean by prostitution????
There is a problem in a situation, not people
very very very wise and accurate observation
I didnt know 'To Kill a MockingBird' was banned or is. It is such a beautiful book.
Well yep it's sold in front of the Bombay High Court 🤣🤣
@@lateshpatil5307 😂😂
After sifting through a chunk of your videos, this one in particular made me subscribe. I was rolling my eyes from all the YA books you've covered in your other videos (no offense to those who like it, not a fan myself, personal preference and all) but to see you cover some actual literature is rather refreshing.
You really should complete Orwell's Animal Farm, the satire he portrays to the Russian conflicts and the control of language, while not the best, is worthy of respect. Lolita is another favorite instant classic of mine that you've mentioned, and the prose and control, to the extents Nabokov has, is seen once in a century. I'll recommend a few more books for you, in case you haven't read them, The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde, The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, and if those seem to be too old and out of time for you; you should check out some of Updike's works, his works are truly the only thing that instill hope and the need for me to keep reading in this YA ridden era of modern "literature", to be taken with a pint of sarcasm, mind you.
Well, love the content! Don't know how CZcams put you in my recommendations, but I sure am glad that it did!
Thanks! Actually my goal is to make India read more, that is why I cover easier books mostly because many Indians haven't gone beyond Chetan Bhagat. I do try to incorporate intense literature too, though...
I noticed you do, which is why I subscribed. I'll look out for those videos in particular. ;D
And it truly is a shame that Indian readers open their hobbies to Chetan Bhagat, but alas, at least *some* good came out of him.
I'm glad that I found your video.
I have a personal grudge against the government for having the audacity to ban art of any form.
As resistance, I made it a passionate hobby of mine to collect as many banned movies and books; starting with 'The Hindu..' as the court ordered it to be burnt!
A suggestion; you should have mentioned the countries too.
Keep up the great work, bibliophile!
Some of my favourite books
1984( I was amazed by how a book could be so well written that it could change our perspective during the read)
A Thousand Splendid Suns( it made me tear up....simply awesome book)
The kite runner
To kill a mockingbird is one of the best books I have ever read.
i m gonna read it
Seems I'm gonna binge on it
True, all of you who haven't read it yet go grab a copy!
It requires true insight to read it !!!
I'm shocked . Helly's mom was a writer. Awesome. That's why she has such a great interest in book reading.
The ending. . *forgets pronunciation*😂😂
You're so adorable 💓
I read Animal Farm only last week and loved it..
The colour purple is a must read not just for badass women, but all women!
Yes!
Great initiative
I really want to salute for the purpose of your channel
U become my favourite maam ..I love the way u explain and hence improving my word power and listening skills too
I have the original copy of lajja... Just in case you want to read it, I live in Kolkata as well...
Wow really? Which years edition
SHOBHIT DWIVEDI meaning?
Lolita messed me up big time. It was like I wished I could write something like that because of how beautifully it was written. It was scary how normal it felt.
Yeah, would also recommend Nabokov's other works too.
I joined this channel about 3 or 4 days before and u hv around 3k subs and now it's 5k+.. well deserved congratulations... I really admire this channel and you..thanks for bringing my reading passion back..❤❤
Thanks a lot lady! You guys support me immensely to grow :'(
Great !
SidTalk Hi Sid
SidTalk sir aapki video dekh kar maja aata hai par sir jo books india me banned hai uska support karna galat nahi hai.
Sid talk sir ji kuch char he....Samj rhe he...
A wonderful, fully engaging and fun video. I had some misconception about the theme of catcher in the rye. Having heard so much positive and negative about this book. After watching this video I am sure to read it.
Are all normal books have both positive and negative reviews.
If it has only positive reviews, understand something is fishy.
This was so much needed ! Banned books is the theme of my bookclub for this month ! I can get my hands on few of it...tysm❤
Which club!??
Helly it's a fb group named page turners by buzzfeed.
Readers don't understand that lolita is supposed to evoke emotions in the reader, and by making them sympathise with humberts plight, bring out traces of paedophilia inside themselves and subsequently make them feel ashamed of themselves. The novel explores the rhetorical effects of language. If you read the forward, the writer under the guise of John ray condemns humberts actions. If you read the afterword, nobokov calls the novel his rendezvous with the English language.
And by the way frankenstein was banned because some people thought that Mary gave creational powers to man to rival God. By the way, frankenstein is subtitled "The modern Prometheus", alluding to the Greek myth of Prometheus creating humans.
I have recently came through your channel and your suggestions are really awesome. Hey! Can you make a video on how to take proper care of books for their longer life.
"The color purple" isn't still banned or is it ? Cuz it features in the honors course under CU. Whether its banned or not it certainly is a powerful book which i absolutely adore for its authentic characters . And yeah Whoopi Goldberg, is another reason for whom i love it even more .❤
And what a start with LOLITA.👏 Nice picks .
Hats off to ur perseverance.. great job!! Keep inspiring..
@Helly: Have you read 'The Satanic Verses' ... ? I think the book is legendary. This was 1st Salman Rushdie book that I read and this book was so dense along with being well-written that I never read any similar book in my life. You should read this if you haven't read it ... I felt it because you said very small about this book in video :)
Beloved, Lolita and The colour Purple are few of my favourite books of all time. And one banned book suggestion from me would be the handmaid's tale by Margaret Atwood. Its my another fav :)
What is your reading speed? I mean how much time you take to finish one book.
Hey I have this one suggestion or request, can you do a review on Dan Brown's Robert Langdon series.. I have read all of them except origin and is a huge fan of his works. It will be nice to hear what you think about them.
You are doing a huge huge favour to all the bookwarms like us incase you are unaware. Thank you for the list. ❤
Hello Mam. Which book should i read for mind programming?
I have already read 'the power of Habit' but couldn't find it inasmuch fruitful. Please suggest any one book. I want to change my habits.
"...there's guilty pleasure in reading banned books..." :D :D :D
to kill a mockingbird is an amazing book... 💖
the awakening is also amazing.. 😍
i should definitely read frankestein.
4k? There are 6k already:-)
Helly your videos are good.. I am a physics student...hence find very little time to read literature...but your videos inspires me to read as much as I can.
Thank you :)
Also after watching your 5-6 videos you seems like a friend...Keep up d good work.
Ohh man! I just searched this content out of curiosity and got the best suggestions especially linked to religion and women question. Have read many of them and will keep the spirit on for the rest..thanks n keep rocking💜

Ma'am, How much time you take to complete one book?
I have read the animal farm.....the story really match the situation of our own country in the present time.....it should be in the syllabus of schools in india...but no politician would reccomend it....
mam...where you got this book ? can I know...
Hi Helly...Could you recommend some hindi novels one should read?? Nobody actually read hindi books so don't really know which one to read or not...
I really couldn't digest Lolita. Left it half way, hated the protagonist way too much!
The Scarlet Affection Same. I found it was justifying a pedophile's faults. Btw I see V in your dp 👀
The Scarlet Affection that's what the writer wanted. He hates Humbert himself( read the foreward)
That's the point, it's supposed to evoke your emotions.
@@subinitamazumder1307 been a psychology student some people can't control them urges due to issues some are well deviant.
Now try to read thinking that you are the protagonist.
God!!!! I'm so obsessed with your channel helly. Keep up the good work.

Di, you're addicting. I have to study and finish reading Jeff Keller's Attitude is everything, but I keep writing down the books you're recommending!
PS;
How do you manage study and reading at the same time! :')
It's interesting to know that I've read banned books as a part of my syllabus. Read 'To kill a mocking bird' in school and 'Beloved' and 'Frankenstein' were part of my college curriculum. All of them are amazing!
There is a banned book called 'Annie on my mind' by Nancy Garden. I'm interested in reading it.
I found Animal farm was so sad.
Another book that is controversial ya might like is also by George Orwell called '1984'.

I studied Animal Farm in collage as it was included in the syllabus of english honours in final year, it tells the story of Russian Revolution in the form of animals in an animal farm
Yes i have heard so too.
I read lajja in Hindi
My opinion is that lajja is collection of a number of incident not novel
