Why are there no bladeless Swiss Army Knives? (except the jetsetter, but c'mon, man!)

- It seems to me that many of us are longing for a bladeless Swiss army knife.
Why hasn't Victorinox given us a bladeless Swiss army knife?
Well, I sure don't know why, but in this video I'm gonna make a lot of suppositions and guesses and you can watch along. If you want, feel free to leave your suppositions and guesses about why Victorinox has not given us a bladeless Swiss army knife in the comments section. I cannot wait to hear all about it!!
Definitely check out the F2S video!

In this video, I'm really not trying to sell you anything. But I did buy a lot of these things at Amazon and if you want to take a look at Amazon for something you want, you can use the affiliate link below. This is just to the Amazon main page but if you do shop there through this link, the channel will get a little bit of money and I really appreciate it.

The humourist in me smiles at the idea of a knife without a knife. SAnK?
Lol yes, the name is a problem, isn't it? I have no answer to that one.
I’d call it a SWAT. Swiss army tool.
@@peteylok1 that's a good one!
Swiss Army Kit
@LarryGarfieldCrell lol that's good!!!
Me! I want a blade-less Victorinox so bad! you’re definitely not alone
I hope Victorinox sees your comment!!
I am a Swiss Army and multitool collector. I watch your videos as soon as they come out. They are so refreshing and you present a different take on things. Thank you.
Wow, Beth, thank you! That is really cool, and I'm flattered! I will try to make videos worth your time.
agree 100% addictive channel!
"The Fish Scaler Soliloquy" has quite a ring to it, I must say. Ironically, the visual humor was particularly on point in this video.
Wow, thank you. That's really nice feedback. Putting all those pictures in and things was actually a lot of work. I'm really glad I bet you enjoyed them.
How about a scalpel holder? Pop the blade out, insta TSA friendly.
That would be so awesome. Them you could buy a blade when you arrived! Or pack it in your checked luggage...
Haha that's funny. Probably faster than going to the scalpel blase store as well.
TSA aside... When I worked at an Elementary school. I bought a Leatherman Knifeless Fuse and the Leatherman PS Style to carry (actually still have them. Incidently, I went to Kaiser ER last week with my kiddo, and they had metal detectors and made me turn in my Leatherman Free P2 (they held it in a container until it returned)... But I was able to carry my Leatherman PS Style. As Hospitals, schools, and government buildings get more strict with "weapons" I can totally see a great reason for a knifeless SAK. I'd buy one.!
I hope your kids is OK! And I am glad that they gave you your free P2 back. Our hospital does not have metal detectors yet. But it's only a matter of time. I am sure.
Glad to see a vote for the bladeless SAK!
Hi Anne !!!
Great Video as usual !!!
I personally think a scapal blade exchanger would be an interesting option to replace the standard two blades. The blade exchanger gives you the option of using several different blade configurations or no blade.
The scapal conversion is one of the most popular Leatherman modifications currently, to replace the serated blade.
Just a thought.
Thank You
-- Joe --
Joe, I really like this idea. This would really be the best of both worlds. Plus, for people who don't want to sharpen their knives, it would give them a way to have a sharp blade. I feel like this could be done so that it fits with the nail file...
That would be awesome!
I know, right??
Agree on the concept of grinding the sharp edges of the knife down to a tool similar to the pill divider tool on the doctors tool.
Oh, that's a good idea. I maybe haven't made it to the comment where someone suggested that, because your passing makes it sound like someone suggested that before you. But I really like the idea. I find myself nervous to modify SAKs, but I see that people have done it before...
Your thoughts are always good!
Well, thank you but I'm pretty sure I have some videos coming up in which my thoughts will be bad so you can look forward to watching those!! Lol thanks for watching and commenting!!
@@thevineclimber 😁
Great video lady!! Thank you !
Thanks for watching, Rich!
I think the answer is as stated above “tradition”. I don’t think the scales are an issue. It’s just the one time cost of building the mold. In fact, Victorinox has done this with a plus scale version 111mm for Garant. They could then just do a blade delete. I’d love a standard Cybertool without the blades, corkscrew and awl but with the plus scales and add the magnifying glass and light. The awl could be replaced with the small screwdriver if necessary.
Oh yeah! That's a great idea!
Yes it is tradition and - as so many people have said - it's a Swiss army KNIFE! Hmmm... maybe they could make plus scales for the 84mm series while they're at it!
Thank you for the comment!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Anne. It's an interesting concept that I could see gaining traction in Europe.
Forgive me my friend, I have not seen your last few videos. Again, I love you sharing things with us and please keep sharing and making these videos. Also.. love the way you are wearing your hair. Thank you!
LOL Thank you! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Hi Anne great question one I've had for a long time I live in Scotland due to UK knife laws and the high knife crime in Scotland it's difficult to even carry a SAK. I contacted Cody at the fit2survive channel and had a custom build done removing both blades highly recommend his work, thanks for the videos keep up the great work!
Oh you DID??!! Nice. How did he handle the layers and scales for you? Did he put the openers where the knives were? I like that because the opener layer has all the openers, then!
Its a 3 layer set I requested specific tools (essentially the super tinker). I replaced the hook with the mini flat head , he was able to remove the knives and put the scissors on the outside layer and I added in the file which actually works well as a substitute blade for package opening etc. plus scales with the pin it's pretty awesome and never usually leaves my pocket even at work where knives are a definite no no.
@@optomasprime83 Wow, a 3 layer super tinker with a file instead of a blade? That sounds amazing. Hm. The prices on his work are high. I can fail several times before meeting his price... hm. Maybe I will try. You may have aftermarket scales?
Yeah the price is high but I'd say reflected in the quality in customabilty. It's black SAK plus scales on it from the factory not sure if I can post a pic lol
Probably not, but it sounds great! Thank you for sharing about it here!
Fiddleling around a bit, screw driver, pry bar........but the idea IS fresh ☺️☺️
Lol I try to keep it fresh!!
Regards, jetsetter, I suggested to victorinox to adapt either rambler by removing blade or similarly adding file tool to jetsetter.
Donald, I couldn't agree more! As it is, it's like a half a tool! The file is such an obvious choice. But I think it needs a partner for the layers. 🤔 maybe a real file with the nail cleaner tip and the ruler with screwdriver tip like on the mini champ!
I keep sending messages to Victorinox about that!!! “Bladeless rambler”… “Improved jetsetter”… “Bladeless Cadet with Scissors”… etc!!
Victorinox Nail Card plus a keychain bottle opener.
@Pinki2019 I have a nail card and find it combines well with victorinox Farmer alox where Blade carries are permitted.
@@donaldcarr8766 That's a good combo - you get really robust big tools and all the little tools you could want!
Great point, one that I think about a lot! I’d like a removable blade so that I can check the blade in my luggage or leave it at home. Only the SwissCard allows for this, but other multi tool companies have found a way with modular tool setups or replaceable utility knife blades.
Yes, you are definitely correct. I worry about the future of Victorinox because they have not been able to meet this need. I wonder what will happen in the future if they cannot. Personally, I think it actually is not that difficult., and they should just push forward with the easiest solutions that we have at hand.
Everyone is calling for a removable blade. How hard could it be for them to develop this? I don't know if they would be willing to, because they have spent so many years making knives for us to use.
I'm glad you didn't delete the liner lock fiasco.😂A Swiss army knife without a blade wouldn't be something I would ever carry, but I can see why alot of people would be interested in something like that. Have a great weekend, Anne!
LOL David I wish I DID delete it! But whenever I say something dumb I want to include it so I don't try to make myself look good.
Thanks for watching!!
At first I thought bladeless was an easy fix. Not now. Thank you for the video. I would probably buy a bladeless model. I am on a trip right now and the Jetsetter is in my pocket.
Nice! Don't you wish the jetsetter had a nail file?
I do. That would be a great addition.@thevineclimber
I so need that for mine...
Just saw word about forthcoming bladeless Victorinoxes on a news site! Thought about you and that certain Companion video right away.
Lol!! That's a funny thing to be known for!! Thanks for coming by!!
Another thoughtful video Anne! I wouldn't be interested in such a critter.I carry a knife at work, frowned upon, but I get away with for now and avoid the TSA most of the time! But I do know people where such a thing would be practical and would consider buying for gifts..Jeff
Hi Jeff! I'm sure your knife is frowned upon only until someone needs a knife. I'm glad you get away with it for now! Thanks for watching and leaving a note!
❤ great video. great channel. sounding good in europe x
Wow, that's so nice, Simon. Thank you very much!!
Hi Anne,
Its a great option.
Im getting one to replace the surated blade on my leatherman.
You are??
Yes !!!
There's two versions one is a direct replacement for the knife blade
The other is one that fits in the blade exchanger on a Surge.
@joecat339 Wow. Does this only work on aSurge?
Interesting points! It may be hard but i recommend trying to make your own custom sak ! 2.5mm brass rods and 2.2mm rods and a few donor saks. The hardest part is drilling the brass out if you dont have a drill press. Peening the brass rods can be hard but if you do it right you'll have the sak you want. Thanks for the video anne.
You are encouraging me to stretch past where I'm comfortable. I appreciate that. But I'm also scared to do it. If I did, though, I mean, I could literally just switch the opener layer for the blade layer on a Swiss champ ala F2S.
Try starting like I did. I bought a cheap older Champion and carefully drilled out the pins. Then I disassembled it and built a climber. The old pins were plenty long enough to re-peen the knife. I won't lie, that Climber was nothing to brag about but l learned the whole process and had a much better understanding of how to do it. You'll likely build a few before you develop the skills to make one that feels like it came from the factory, but there's a lot of fun and satisfaction in it every time. (initially a lot of frustration too)@@thevineclimber
@@thevineclimber The brass pins are daunting. There are some places that have scales and screws which (theoretically) are easier to deal with for customs. That said the length is essentially fixed and the layers are not consistent thickness. But easier than pins.
@@wvbeatlefan I did the same (but got a new Champ on sale).
The drilling wasn’t too hard after watching someone else and how they did it.
Yay! I love that you're covering this. I wish they'd just add the file screw driver to the jetsetter. I really want a rambler with a removable blade. Have you seen the mods with the scalpel replacing the knife where you can just pop out the blade?
Yes, I have and I wish that I could just buy a model that would do what I need. I wonder if I can just cut the blade off. Maybe I'll buy a Rambler and just try to cut the blade off and see what happens. Frankly, I do not want to spend $250 on a Swiss army knife, but I'm tired of not having the tools that I prefer.
Thank you very much for watching and commenting.
The Swiss Army KNIFE is a knife - without a knife blade it's a tool. Not sure it will live up to it's name.
I gave a lot of thoughts and considerations as for what tool i need to have with me all the time and settle on 58mm Victorinox knife build to my specs by the "Fit 2 Survive Customs" (Build #339) that replaces the blade with a scalpel #11 holder that is supposed to be travel friendly if the scalpel blade is removed. I further improved by making nail nick for opening scalpel and squared off the nail file to use with firefly firesteel firestarter that takes the toothpick place - I love having a ballpoint pressurized ink pen in the scales. I've practiced and broke a few of the firefly firesteeels and came up with technique that works best for me for starting a fire.
It'a a keychain size and I like that I take is with me as I take the keys and cellphone with me all the time.
I have made a bladeless Bocker and used tsa-friendly Leathermans to take onboard.
I was not considering 111mm Victorinox as it's getting close to , or exceeds the 7inch length (please read the TSA requirements) with the tools opened on both sides - the way it's measured by TSA.
Thank you for you video, very informative and entertaining.
Well, what an awesome experience I have seen your knife on that channel! How cool is that the scalpel blade holder is such a great idea and I really glad that it's working out for you. It's really great to hear the results of such an interesting build!! Thanks!
Great content Ann. I've had a Jetsetter for a few weeks - for the combi tool. The classic SD knife is too flimsy but scissors are excellent. Maybe disassembly and remove the blades, sorted. Thanks 🙏
Yeah, I'm afraid to disassemble it for some reason... I take your point, though!! Thanks for leaving a comment!
I'm sure they could replace the big blade with a comb or even a frame for a standard removable utility blade.
Yes those are good ideas!! Thanks! I would love a horn comb on my SAK!!
I don't travel much but have been thinking about the idea of having a bladeless tool for the chance that I do travel or situations like you mentioned where you are somewhere that you can't have a knife. The Jetsetter is nice but I agree that more tools would make it much more handy. It's a shame that Gerber discontinued the Gerber Dime Travel. I think that would have been a great one. (I know it's not Victorinox... Just speaking about tools that used to exist that fit the bill.)
You're very right about the Gerber dime travel. I am kind of shocked the thing is discontinued, but I'm sure it's the same thing with the TSA not being a great setter of stable rules. I've been testing the gerber Dime on and off for my at home multi tool series. It's nice!
I don't think I would travel with something that I couldn't buy a replacement for.
The chance of confiscation seems maybe pretty high even of a bladeless Victorinox.
Fish scaler uses: dog scratcher, pointy thing, back scratcher, reach into a hole and grab something things. What's your favorite uses of the fish scaler?
Drawing straight lines measuring things, including the thickness of biscuit dough so that the biscuits turn out right, getting the gross dried up hand lotion or soap off of the pump without having to touch it, poking things, removing live and not-too-scary bugs from the house!
Very interesting
Glad you think so! All of it could be wrong, but that's what I think, anyway.
Nice video Anne,
I have flown many times with my regular pocket knives. You can take your pocket knife with you as long as you put it inside your checked luggage bags. (not on your person or in your carry-on)
JT
Good point!! I do not care for checked luggage, but sometimes I'm stuck with it. And a lot of times my husband has checked luggage! I will load his suitcase up with knives next time lol! "Why is my suitcase so heavy, Anne? "Oh, honey, I don't know... You must have brought too many things!!"

LOL 😀 😆
Hey Anne 🌻
I enjoyed that, and appreciate the embedded slides too👌
I think it's just a matter of time, before Victorinox 🙏 and others start making a 'bladeless' model, due to tighter laws...
You made two wise choices there, with those Vic models, they would work well, lady 😉
If you switched the parcel opener to the Alox, you can add some thin washers, as spacers...
The sudden 'liner-lock' realisation, was endearing 😊
Thanks for sharing,
until the next time, when it's...

Lol I'm glad you appreciated the liner lock part because after I uploaded it and rewatched it, I was like, "Why didn't I edit that out?"
You are probably right, and it is a matter of time. I hope the time comes soon though because at the rate Victorinox usually moves, I'll be settled into a retirement home before I get a Swiss army knife I can carry at work!
@thevineclimber
😁😂 You're funny :)
They'll be like... "Anne, you need to put the SAK saw away and come in from the garden now, as it's starting to rain 🌧 and dinner is about to be served..."
So you reply, "I'll be just 2 minutes, as I'm nearly done!" 😊
Have a great weekend, all three of you 🍻
I'm actually thinking hard about removing the blade layer on my Workchamp after watching this 😅
Great video as always Ann, thank you for coming up with all these awesome ideas ❤
(it's me, Raz, formerly "israeli_edc" 😉)
Hey Raz! The other good thing is then you could carry a knife and this work champ tool.
I definitely agree with this. I have a Leatherman Knifeless Rebar for this reason. I sometimes work in Hospitals and corporate offices that have security checkpoints, looking for knives. About a quarter of my year I can't have anything more than a utility knife. It would be cool to have a Knifeless cybertool. I would buy a few Knifeless Victorinox, if they made them.
Oooh yeah - a knifeless Cybertool would be awesome!! I bet a lot of computer folks would like that. 👍
This is something I wanted since a while, same goes on multitools. They all have knives.
Although I would like either a scalpel or an utility blade that is removable.
So you can have a TSA compliant tool and it works in countries where knife carry is banned.
I think that is a great idea!! I have a knifeless rebar which I recently got for work. I don't think I'd risk it with the TSA, though!!
@@thevineclimber Yeah but they can make such if possible, although things like saws scissors might be a problem but someone have to tell about this.
To me you have raised something about knifeless swiss knives. I mean this allows people to have either something focused on actual "tools" and have a mini convenient toolbox... Or if desired for some people who prefer to carry a separate blade to do so.
The "knife" here is more about the format factor or setup. Mostly because some tools do fit in such format.
Most flat drivers, certain other formats too like philips, hex, pry tools awls, food can openers, wire stripping, files, hooks, pin removers, bit and socket drivers, scissors, saws, wrenches, thin pliers, magnifying glasses and many things.
This is a very good comment. I agree with you totally. There are many things that we use on a regular basis which could fit in this "flat" format. Personally, I enjoy being able to solve problems and I like the fact that I can carry with me tools that enable me to do so. But once the blade becomes the reason that I can't carry any other tools without going to a great deal of hassle, then I'm very annoyed, and also less useful.
I agree on the bladeless SAK, I think Fit to Survive makes one called Mountain Explorer
Great question and thought process 👍 @paddyspotatopeelers had a great little 58mm custom bladeless piece that he gave away as a prize at our church event last summer. Ironically and brilliantly, it was won by a friend of mine who cannot understand why anyone would want or need to carry a knife in public. She was thrilled with the dinky little scissors and file SAK - and I would love one too - especially a larger version with a few more tools
Oh wow that's awesome! I love his channel but I haven't been one there in a while. Very cool. :) scissors and file/SD would to me be better than the jetsetter, but it would be best to add the 58mm combo tool, I think!
@@thevineclimber scissors, file, combo tool, pen. That covers like 99% of what I'd need in a month. Maybe if they could do flashlight and pen in one tool (opposite scales) that would be good, though I've not heard good things about SAK flashlights.
I’ve been playing around with customs, including those without blades.
There are aftermarket scales without the cutout for the corkscrew.
Cool! Is it hard to drill out the pins? Did you find the scales on Etsy?
Thanks for the info!
👍🏼good vid. Goat tool is working on a one sided modular tool. Like a pocket knife. 🙂
Andrew, that's gonna be really cool. I think it's hard for a company like them right now. Because everyone's interest is changing every 5 seconds.
I would love a bladeless SAK. I have a nice Explorer with plus scales, but living near Chicago (very tight knife laws) I basically can't carry it. All I can really carry is a Jetsetter.
The best replacement woild be a craft blade. Basically an xacto blade you can pop out. Several other companies already sell those, and some pliers based tools have them (as well as a knife still, for some reason.) Trivial to replace, trivial to throw out if some security checkpoint objects. Works great as a package opener. I used to have a small one on my keychain.
I don't know how much of a issue the corkscrew is. The other issue is the reamer awl, but I feel like a nail file could go there.
Really, take my Explorer, rip off the blade layer, and swap the awl for a nail file. I'm set. If you want to put in a craft blade and something else sure, but honestly I just flip the scissors open wide and I have a package opener. Problem solved.
So yeah, it's not just you. If Vixtorinox sold a real 91mm bladeless I'd be all over it. Hell or they made multiple I'd probably get one of each if they're not too expensive. :-)
Wow, this is such a great post! Thank you! I think an exacto blade holder would be great. :)
I actually am working on a video about SAKs in Chicago. I was there a couple weeks ago for a bridal shower and it got me to thinking about it. Sounds like you are like me - careful to obey the knife laws. Do you think most people are?
@@thevineclimber Ooo... Looking forward to it.
Most people are not. For instance, spring assisted knives are not allowed at all, AFAIK. So of course you can buy them at Home Depot for $10.
Pre-pandemic I flew frequently for work, so got very atuned to avoiding the wrath of the capricious bottom feeders at the TSA. That led me to research local knife laws as well, and I realized that Chicago has a smaller length limit than the state, and I'm pretty sure a 91mm main blade is too long. Which strikes me as utterly bonkers, as a screwdriver is a more effective weapon, but such is life in the law.
I also would not want to get to some public building only to realize they have a checkpoint and I have nowhere to store a pocket tool, just because there is a knife blade I never use on it. A removable craft blade would solve that problem completely.
@LarryGarfieldCrell I really love this, for that exact scenario. I usually prefer regular blades but I have really enjoyed the precision of the fiskars #11?? blade at times. This is a good idea. I think F2S has actually done this. It won't be cheap, though!!!
I'd like one, a small one. I often get caught going to sporting events or concerts realizing I forgot to leave my Victorinox at home. It would be nice to have one that I never need to leave at home! Btw, most nations air transit authorities do allow small knives on airplanes again, so Victorinox may have less motive than ever before to produce such a muli tool.
Yeah, that's true. I'm not sure you will ever get them to make it. Yes, I agree, a small one would be a great idea! Heck, I didn't even know about my hospital's no knife policy until I had a small one on a keychain and someone saw it and told me it wasn't allowed.
After watching this video I gave it much thought, with a blade or without a blade. For me, with a blade. If my Huntsman did not have a blade I would have to bring another knife with a blade. For me a blade of some type is a must. If Victorinox eliminated the big blade on the Huntsman I could do well with their small blade alone, need a blade.
Yes, I do agree with you. The Companion does alright without a blade because of the package opener, but that would not be my first choice. I’d rather have a blade!! Thanks for your thoughtful comment!!
Very well thought out video. I’m sure there is a market for a SAK without a blade. With the restrictive knife laws in Europe I’m surprised Victorinox has developed a bladeless model.
I know, ne too. Maybe they are holding the line that people need knives?
Excellent video. Bladeless SAK would be awesome for USA folks who spend time in federal buildings (and some state courts), most any school at any level, and so many other workplaces. Also travel, but I completely agree that reputable companies can't market anything as TSA compliant even without a blade. Each fickle agent has ultimate say in the moment. Also, I remember how in 2002 the TSA said their upcoming new rules would allow small knives (less than 2in?), but ultimately released the no-blades-ever rule AFTER a few makers developed what should have been compliant products. Fool me once…
Oh, yeah, I forgot about that time they said they'd allow small blades again!! LOL good memories, good memories.
Thank you for the very nice comment. When you list all of the people who could benefit from this it makes me really wonder even more. I think it's because they aren't sure what to put opposite the nail file that they would presumably put on the tool? They hope to ride out the anti knife sentiment? Beats me!!
Thanks much for your very nice comment!
I would like to have heard your dissertation on the fish scaler.😁👍❤
Ahhahaha!! I may make a video on that. Ode to the Fish Scaler!
Maybe a longer, better file, or larger scissors. Maybe look at some of the tools from the swisstool line?
I think people would love a diamond file! Even the nail file from the Executive. A soatula?
Yes, I've wondered the same thing about only having one option "Jetsetter" as a bladeless Victorinox. I ended up carrying and using the Leatherman Style PS. In all honesty it's not as good as Victorinox. I would certainly purchase a 91 mm alox tool set that had scissors, diamond nail file, flathead/cap lifter and can opener/ 2D Philips. That would be a handy, slim profile, useful tool that would probably fit a lot of peoples lives.
Yes. That would be awesome. I would definitely buy that!!
Actually a good idea. Maybe they will make a nail maintenance model. Maybe with a telescopic back scratching tool.
LOL! Long- distance dog scratcher!!!
A bladess SAK would be an instant buy for me. I carry a full size knife (Spydercos), but still carry a SAK for the nail file and other tools. The knifes in my SAK are almost never used. Make it thinner… or stick something else useful there.
If it's thinner, it's also lighter! That's a great reason to have a bladeless SAK. Plus, for knife collectors, they can carry a different blade every day!
Have you considered carrying a Swiss card with some knipex pliers ? One of the card models has all the scale tools scissors, and a small removable “fixed” blade as I’m sure you know. If you feel the need to open a can the P38 is a really good choice.
Hair is looking great!
Lol!!!! Thanks!!!!
SAKs are origami-esque puzzles by design. I honestly think they could come up with a new bladeless tool. They just need to find that niche market so the tools incorporated make sense.
That is an interesting point Not to focus on the fact that it's bladeless, but the feet that it meets some need, like all the other SAKs!! Great perspective shift! Thank you!
I have a SAK explorer that has the blades removed but that layer now has a file, best function for a blade less SAK, had it made as I can’t carry a blade at work. I also have a SAK that is just the opening layer plus corkscrew ( the man that makes those calls it ‘the barman’ )
Will share some pictures if there’s a way to send/share them
Wow!!! That is really cool. I love the name, too. Hm - should be possible to do the same but with the new package opener tool, too. I love these mods but the thing that has held me back from buying them is that they may not be something many of my viewers wish to allocate their money to. They are often so expensive! I have this drive for everybody-included, the bar is not too high for anyone tools. And that is another reason to like bladeless SAKs, because it lets kids use them before they are ready (or their parents are ready) to have a blade.
There's no way to share pictures on CZcams without starting a channel. I'm trying to figure out a safe way to open files on my computer.
Interesting... I wonder if the long metal magnifying glass from the Evolution would fit where the large blade is currently? Then the other end could be a nail file. That seems to be a useful combo. I might be one of the few who like that magnifying glass though. 🙂
You know I keep thinking about making a video about that magnifying glass. It has its own special charm with the very distortion but high magnification it brings to the table!
I like your idea and would very much value having a Swiss army knife with a magnifying glass as my everyday carry at work.
Thanks!!
@thevineclimber I think the magnifier is a good option, both as a magnifier and potential firestarter. I'd like to see a video of you using the magnifier to light some kindling (if that's possible.)
This is the very reason I've moved to the Leatherman Rebar Bladeless. So many tools easily to hand but no blades. (As long as you don't count the saw or the awl.)
Lol Yeah, I know isn't that funny? And I'm sure I could carry a hammer in the hospital all day if I wanted to. A person with bad intentions is gonna be a person with bad intentions no matter what they're carrying. Actually have a Leatherman revived blade list as well. I don't love it because the tools are on the inside but I still like it.
@@thevineclimber We have the added problem in the UK that a fixed/locking blade is illegal unless you can prove good reason.
@@christopherhume8896 Sorry, I used voice to text on that last response. And apparently didn't read it before I hit send. Yeah, this is a good reason to have Swiss army tools that don't have a blade. That way, you can carry one in any country you want and any city you want and not have to worry about it.
Jetsetter came up in suggestions.
Yes, the jetsetter definitely is an option, and I'm glad that they make that tool, but don't you always wish it had a nail file with a flat screwdriver on it? I do. But really, I would love to have a larger Swiss army tool.
Totally agree. An alox with scissors and openers would be kind of like a full-sized Jetsetter, which I would love. I've been having similar thoughts about the Jetsetter (which I carry, because I spend a lot of time in a country with a total knife ban): I would love it to also have the nail file/2.5mm flathead, kind of like a bladeless Rambler, but what would go on the other side instead of the blade? The Minichamp's cuticle-pusher? Hard to see that being very popular! Still thinking, would love to hear suggestions...
You could just go with the Victorinox Nail Card and any random keychain bottle opener. Or just break the knife off a Rambler.
@@Pinki2019 Honestly at first something about that suggestion made me recoil, but after a bit of thought maybe a Nail Card isn't a bad idea!
You could also do the nail care card!
Agree for an alox could swap out blade for file on pioneer x.
Ooh yes that would be useful! I love that idea! Thanks!!
Airport security once told me that my 8cm long 10 and 12mm wrench for the bike could be used as a weapon and therefore confiscated it. I could have argued or ask for a manager, but boarding would have started 30 min later and the time it takes me from security to the gate was about 15min. So, easy choice. That wrench had cost about 10 bucks, missing the flight about 150, plus it was the last flight of the day. So I donated my wrench to the next auction of confiscated items. Maybe the security guy was wrong, but who would have argued ?
Anything sharp and long enough to be potentially dangerous is likely to be confiscated: a saw, even the pointy fish scaler...
Even if a TSA-approved Vic multi-tool is being confiscated, would you then go after Victorinox to get a new one in the case you are told to leave it at security? How much of a hassle is anyone willing to do for a 20 to 50 bucks item?
I do think Vic could offer more bladeless multi-tools that I would try to bring for a flight. They shouldn't be expensive as there is always a risk of leaving at the security check.
- 58mm The Mini Champ minus the blades, although the orange peeler might be considered to be too sharp.
- 91mm Cyber Tool maybe including the file minus the blades, though the market for that might be too small for Victorinox
These are great ideas. Lol I'm sad you lost your wrenches. How silly.
I won't argue, but I'll still be mad if they take my stuff. My sister had her Leatherman confiscated and I was totally bummed. But it had a blade - she ust forgot about it.
Things are getting so expensive that I suppose you're right. We are more willing to have things confiscated because that much money can't buy as much anymore!
Hey Anne. Great video. There is the 58mm Jetsetter. It is meant to be TSA friendly and I think a couple of CZcamsrs have tested it. I have it on my list to buy and try. It has the scissors, Combi tool with small but excellent Phillips screwdriver and the nail file/flathead screwdriver. As on my Midnite Manager.
Hi MB! Unfortunately, at least in the United States, it does not have the flat head and nail file. If it did, I would get behind this tool, but as it is, it's a tool that I've given to some small children in my life who are not allowed to have any sort of blade and honestly, that's probably a reasonable choice for them. Unfortunately, the scissors have stabbed me already and the children still cannot turn a flat head screw with this tool. I am insane with this!!
@@thevineclimber Hi Anne. My Mistake it has just the combi tool (Phillips) and the scissors. I think we are back to Steve's idea of picking a SAK with the tools that you want and grinding down the blade to the tang and using as a flathead screwdriver.
@@MB_EDC I am very interested in this....
@@thevineclimber Me too. It has got me thinking about getting a second hand SAK and mutilating it. I really like these sorts of questions that you raise in your videos. The alternative of course it's a mini pocket toolkit with the individual files that you want/need. Slightly more bulky but infinitely more flexible ... My best video so far covered this topic from a point of view of replacing s Leatherman. You could do the same for a knifeless SAK! Or if not I'll have a go. As I need something for when flying and currently just have a Gerber Shard.
Yes I enjoyed that video of yours! I do see the attracting, and your video was really extremely good. I was a tiny bit jealous. But for me, I don't want to replace a SAK with a kit. I used to carry SO MUCH stuff around that I didn't use much precisely because it was all in kits and I need something very easy to access, or I just won't use it. Dude, you should totally make a video about a bladeless SAK replacement kit. The more videos we can make, the greater the chance that Victorinox will listen to us! Oh my gosh, I just went back to rewatch that. You got 143000 views on that, oh my heavens!!!!
I would come out with a new 'Office Blade" to replace the main blade. This would be a type of "letter opener with a line cutter but not true cutting edge and a rounded tip. Sort of like a spatula but with a line cutter portion which could be used to cut open packages, cut twine, etc. (Think: over sized orange peeler). The small blade would be replaced with the nail file. Imagine such a blade on the Companion. You have the package opener for the hard to open stuff, and the letter opener for envelopes and small packages, twine, etc. And no awful, horrible knife blade to cause mass hysteria and panic.
Wow I really love this. This is definitely an amazing tool suggestion. And I hope Victorinox reads your comment. I would buy one of those for myself and everyone I know who doesn't carry a knife. Wow.
@@thevineclimber, thanks. In this day and age, a not lethal, box cutter makes sense to me.
I like the idea that you are thinking outside of the box, Anne. I think a bladeless SAK would be very acceptable for many parents who are hesitant to give their child a tool with a blade. As we know, Victorinox makes several tools with blunt tipped blades for the younger SAK enthusiasts, however, I'm sure some parents think they are still too dangerous to give to their children.
As for me... I'm reluctant to carry anything that could remotely be considered a weapon on an airline after having my tactical pen confiscated in a small airport in Central Oregon.
Hi George! When I made this video I was not thinking about kids but you're absolutely right. I would love a bladeless Victorinox to give to children. I also think that people who prefer to carry a separate knife would maybe prefer to not have 2 blades on their Swiss army knife as well.
I am sorry to hear about your tactical pen.
Interesting- Bladless is not high on my list, but I can see why it would be for some people
Yes, my blade is my most commonly used tool, but when I'm at work I can't have it, so I'd like to at least have all of the other ones! Thank you so much for your comment!
I watched the video on doctors/physicians knives and thought about if they made a modern version for nurses what would it be like. Would replacing the blade with a spatula actually be useful?
I doubt it. I am not a nurse, but they mostly use scissors and maybe pliers, flashlight, and regular tools if needed... I think if you were crushing pills at home for someone who can't take pills, this may be a good choice, still!!
I like the removable blade idea. But what about the scissors? Are they “tsa” compliant? Maybe that depends on who the agent is that inspects your SAK. I think consistency at TSA is a reasonable expectation.
I am sure it will change... whenever they want!! I think small scissors are usually considered TSA compliant,,, who knows??
Thanks for watching and commenting!!
Since Leatherman discontinued the Squirt and Style models, and I broke my Style PS, I'd like to have a blade less multi tool with pliers and scissors. Any other tools would be extra.
Obviously not a SAK anymore with no knife. There is no replacement for a full length too. What I would like to see would be a pliers and/or a half length strong prybar-box opener and put another half sized tool of choice on the other side.
You know, it would be really cool as the chisel from the Swiss tool. That could go opposite the prybar. I think ADV Motorbike talks about the pliers!
Happy Friday Anne. A Blade less Swiss Army Knife is an Oxymoron - it would become a Swiss Army Utility Tool. Just take a 4 or 5 or 6 layer SAK into a hardware store & have the blades cut off & ground down all the way to the Tang stamp into to a semi-rounded shape with no cutting edge to use as a pharmaceutical spatula or watch opening tool. BTW there are 91mm scales without scale tools in them - on the now discontinued 91mm Standard - which is a Spartan without scale tools or a key ring although it does have a corkscrew but no pin hole in the scales , I have 2 of the Marlboro unlimited series 91mm Standards. ATB Steve in Tel Aviv.🥰
Good point about it being an oxymoron, but I can live with a victorinox multitool it's all down to marketing and design. A small range of adapted multitools has potential customer demand. As an example, Leatherman has a knifeless rebar regarding multitool.
I think Steve's idea of getting the blade ground down is the easiest mod to do. It seems sacrilegious - but worth it to boost your work everyday carry. Perhaps look out for a used SAK with a broken blade to operate on 😁
@@MB_EDCHappy Friday - a SAK with a broken blade would be a good option. It depends on what specific tools a person wants on their blade less SAK. Lets say you want a scissors, a Phillips screwdriver, an awl, a flat screwdriver/bottle cap lifter , a parcel hook, a can opener & pliers - you take the deluxe tinker and grind down the 2 blades but if you need a wood saw rather than pliers - you take the huntsman, in any case you should buy a 2nd hand SAK as cheaply as possible and if you need as many tools as possible for a blade less SAK that can be pocket or purse (handbag) carried then buy a 2nd hand Handyman
@@stevesinclair4159Hey Steve. Hope you are well. It's not easy to buy second hand knives , but I will look out for some SAKs. I would like to try replacing scales and maybe swapping out some tools.
I am sorry it has taken me so long to see this comment! I'm actually working on this right now... ssshhhh
The large file might fit the blade slot. I think the main problem is, and it’s already been stated by other posters, is it a Swiss Army Knife (SAK) …. not a Swiss Army Tool (SAT) and Victorinox is a very, almost to a fault, traditional company that changes slowly if at all! I think your best hope is for a blade-less multitool as it wouldn’t mean retooling and reengineering a traditional line product.
Yes, I think you are correct. I don't know that they would ever make something like this! The large file would be a really neat addition to a lot of tools. They could even make a thinner file. That would be like a nail file!
Another thing is that Victorinox does not offer locking blades on 91mm lines of SAKs. Sure, some countries ban locking knives but they surely can offer it in others that don't. 85mm (the Evolution line) have locking blades on some selected models, but sadly all of them are going away, along with the locks.
Thank you for your comment. Yes, I agree with you. This is a problem I would like to see solved. I actually think I would like to make a video about that lock, though. I don't love it. I like the locks on the 111mm models, but that Evo lock isn't great. I think that many people would be much happier with a 91mm Victorinox if it locked. 🤔
Wow! How prophetic you are now that today Victorinox announces that they will produce a whole line of bladeless tools.
The fit to survive explorer modifications are awesome, and i am sure victorinox could produce this tool set.
Is this the one with the opener layer in place of the blades?? I think that would be great.
@thevineclimber One year ago, "two bladeless victorinox modifications " Fit to survive.
@thevineclimber replaced the blade with the scissors (one with green scales).
@@donaldcarr8766 Yes, I went back and put a link to it in the description. For this video I use that as a reference in the video but I forgot to link to it.
His custom names are awesome and I Have fought many times about getting one. As it is, I admire them from afar.
I would like to be able to fly with a SAK. I use a Climber most often. I would replace the blade with a cheese cutter. I don’t cut much more than fruit and cheese when I travel.
Consedering where i'm from, Belgium, carrying a sak is itself not legal (tsa friendly or not)
So i tought, if they made sak without knives maybe they'll be selling like crazy where i'm from (and it's like 1 country next to switzerland, so not that far, and i mean France is the same regarding knife legislation)
But then i tought, people are not even carriyng flashlights when i'm from...
And then i tought, if you really need a "bladeless sak" it means you already need a normal sak in the first place, in fact you need it so badly that you need it to be transformed into a very special form.
So to summury meaybe it's better to sell casual sak, and let moders do what they want then providing any little variant they mey need
Yes, I agree. This is a very good point. Suppose I wish the mods were less expensive or easier to do. It is a lot to think that a special tool will be made. But we are talking about entire countries where people might be interested in carrying a tool. I like Daphne's idea of an Explorer with no blades but with a pliers. And of course plus scales! Now that I know this about Belgium and France, I feel like this could be very successful actually.
So I think I changed my mind by writing this comment LOL.
I would like one without a knife to complement a tinker or a companion because my handyman or my champ are just too wide and I like to use my knife
Wouldn't it be interesting to have a Swiss champ split into two? So you could carry your most used tools and then carry a set of complimentary tools.
i really want a sak that has a spoon, like an explorer but instead of the magnifying glass a spoon/spork. a replacement for the large blade can be a comb.
Oooh that's an interesting idea. I suppose the fish hook disgorger could be a fork!
I played with the idea of a pocket knife with spoon/fork for a while but then decided to buy an almost standard size titanium fork and spoon set for my EDC kit.
This set is much easier to use ( normal size) and clean ( dishwasher). TSA friendly too .. but I haven't tested that yet!
they could have newer tools instead, maybe a spudger/prying tool or some kind of long, sleek screwdriver or even two ontop of each other.
Oh yeah, like the long Phillips from the Workchamp and Outrider!!
"blade-less" Victorinox Swiss Army knife ? ........GOOD QUESTION !!!!
Lol you're right! I know!!
@@thevineclimber why does Victorinox NOT update their Swiss Army knife multi-tools with strong heat-treated stainless steel frames? Victorinox is using outdated materials in the 21st century. Victorinox uses weak aluminum frames.
I have a small $6 dollar Cabela's multi-tool that has a stainless steel frame.
It is much stronger than my Victorinox RAMBLER multi-tool.
My RAMBLER is only good for light-duty applications
EU regulations let you fly with a knive in your pocket or hand luggage as long as the effective blade length does not exceed 60 mm. So over here it's allowed to carry up till a Victorinox Cadet during flight. Quite a surprise to me, but a lucky one as I had forgotten to take my Executive out of my pocket.
Wow that is great!! So weird how blade regulations on planes are more strict in the US, which has looser blade regulations overall, I think. But Europe is not a monolith, either.
A carved out slot to store USB charging cord maybe? Or very thin battery bank?
Wow that's a great idea! Solving problems that are more current... I didn't even think of something like that!! I love it!
Which would be easier?
Convince Victorinox to make a bladeless knife or get the TSA to stop banning knives?
Lol! Probably neither.
I dont necessarily think a edc multitool and a travel multitool is going to be the same thing. If you cant have sharp things on it while travelling, that makes for a pretty nerfed edc tool imo. The easiest solution by far would be if you have checked in luggage, just put your multitool in your suitcase where its actually allowed to be and dont carry it on board at all with the added benefit of not even having to have the conversation with TSA about it at all.
If not, then some degree of modding needs to happen I guess. One of the more popular mods to do on a SAK, usually at the same time as putting custom scales on, is to replace the peened brass pins in it with pivot screws so the tool can be disassembled and serviced with a screwdriver. With that mod, you could fairly easily just take out the blades you dont need and put them back later. Another option is to permanently remove all blades and carry a separate pocket knife in daily life.
It is a bit sad that Victorinox is so rigid about not making changes or innovating imo. As much as I like their stuff, they are the biggest knife manufacturer in the world and they know it. They are resting on their laurels while falling further behind every year. The closest thing to modernizing ive seen from them was the Cybertool series, but I really think they could go really far with very little effort if they gave people options like user servicable knives, customization, more modern tools (imagine something like the leatherman flat bit driver on a SAK), upgraded blade steels and alternative blade shapes, some degree of modularity etc. I would absolutely be willing to pay an increased cost for that, and I know alot of others would too, especially with the recent rise in SAK popularity.
But I dont think thats going to happen until they fall so far behind they will have to innovate out of necessity. Until then, modders like F2S is an absolute godsend. I dont do anything commercially, but im currently upgrading my home made CNC machines to hopefully be able to produce customs SAK parts from scratch. Now that would shake things up a bit!
Oh my gosh wow! That would be amazing. Seriously amazing. You could make a needle threader as a back layer tool; you could make your Leatherman bit-compatible driver; you could make a hobby blade holder; you could make a back layer removable mini screwdriver!!! Aaah I hope that works out for you!!!!
I have a hard time believing that the demand for a bladeless SAK is so high it would be a profitable to mass produce it.
Yes I think that is the question, really. And yet there are some models which can't be that popular... I don't know.
Well we know at least one channel Victorinox is subscribed to.
Lol dude Let's test it! I will make a video saying that what we really need is a Swiss army knife just for making sandwiches; there will be a blade for cutting tomatoes. A plastic blade for cutting lettuce that doesn't turn brown. A non sharp spreading blade and a regular blade for cutting the sandwich in half. If they come out with it, then we know they are subscribers! but to be honest, if they came out with it. I would totally buy it.
In Spain, we cant go outdoor with any kind of medium knife or bigger, except if you go hikin or something. You cant leave in your poket while driving, only in yours car trunk. If you carry a knife at night, you will have problems, if you carry some multitool with knife, the same. And even if your knife its small like a classic or minichamp, it depends the particular police man apreciation if you allowed to carry they in public, based on your apearance.
For those people like us who like to carry a multitool with us every time, but no want trouble with justice, they gona make that "bladeless" model. I will go to buy it day one.
I think its no complicated to understand. They will still making another blade tools.
Wow.
It sounds like the rules are very strict in Spain.Thank you so much for leaving this comment; it was very interesting to read about your situation.
I could get a lot done with just scissors, but will TSA always consider that bladeless? I saw the comment about the removable blade knives. That’d be great and no more sharpening.
Yeah it would solve this problem. That's a good idea, at least for traveling when you will not pack a suitcase for checkimg. You are so right - TSA may not consider this bladeless with the scissors. They can change their rules any time!
A Swiss work champ with a large pry tool/scraper in place of the blade?
I love this idea!
I’m assuming you just saw the announcement that they are going to make one?
Heck yeah! I don't think anyone will want to have those instead of a bladeless model except in situations where the blade is a problem.
@@thevineclimber I concur. If the price is right it will probably be a thing everyone will get just have in case
I doubt a knife-less SAK would sell well. Especially a Workchamp. If someone has to bring a SAK on a plane, they can put it in their check-in luggage. I just don't don't think there's much of a market for a blade-less SAK. I could be wrong!
Yes; you make a good point! I don't know. I mean, they make the Fieldmaster and the Huntsman - I can't believe they have both! I bet a bladeless SAK would get more purchasers than the sales of the Fieldmaster plus Huntsman compared to Huntsman alone if the Fieldmaster didn't exist.
i have made a bladeless 4 layer :)
Really?! What is on it?
They just announced the development of a bladeless line.
I’m from the UK. Last time I went to the US the TSA confiscated my mini nail clippers!🙄
I'm so sorry! That seems crazy. No knife was on it?
@@thevineclimber nope
@@thevineclimber to be honest even without the knife blades there are still plenty of tools you could harm people with that the TSA won’t like! 🫤

Yes!! I'm so excited!
Holy Moly , what’s next ?
Cain killed Abel with a rock for crying out loud .
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.
I'm not saying all Swiss army knives should be bladeless. The blade is the most-used item on my Swiss army knife! But I am saying that, given some countries restrictions, and given some peoples limitations, and given environments like where I work, which does not allow ANY blade, it only makes sense to have the next best thing available - a bladeless Swiss army "knife". I'm definitely not anti- knife. I'm pro-2A also, if that helps you see this argument in a different light.
Great video. I was not aware they had a package opener. With the exception of one, all my SAKS are ALOX. Never assume that all TSA Agents are competent and follow the law. Many are on power trips or make arbitrary decisions. If they confiscate what choice do you have to miss your flight.
Yes, you are correct. That is up to them, and even though you could try to fight it, your tool's already gone! That's why I think it's best if these companies don't really worry about the TSA and instead try to please the 2 other groups of people who could use bladeless tools - those who work or live in areas where they can't carry them and people who want a smaller multi tool to pair with their separate knife.
Areed@@thevineclimber
What about going back to how things were?
I know people who got told they couldn’t take their pocket tools on a flight.
One do them was a Wrench (a pocket one.).
So soon enough they will ban more tools.
Swiss army KNIFE. KNIFE being the name.
True.
Guess Vic was listening as they just announced they will be offering knifeless models in the future
Nice idea for travelers, but I wouldn't want a SAK without the knife/knives... first, what will do the same function that the knife does without being a knife? Travelers can carry a kit for grooming, or buy it at their destination. Leave the SAK at home. That is what I do. There are some specialty SAKs that do different things already. Lately I have been using the larger blade for cutting pastries or cakes at the Cafe. Nice to have a real knife instead of the plastic one which destroys cakes because of the ridge.
That is one of the best uses for an everyday carry knife I have ever heard of! Who doesn't want their pastries to be perfect?? I think something that could do the same function as the knife does without being a knife (but which would NOT be good for pastries) could possibly be the package opener! But it doesn't do everything. I agree that a grooming kit would work well for travelers! Thank you for leaving a comment!
