The pendulum of workout programming is always a swingin’.
Some people say frequency is the ticket. You know, you have to squat every day if you want big legs, and if you’re squatting once a week, you’ll always have pinions.
Others claim absurd amounts of volume is the key. If you’re not doing 20 to 40 sets per muscle group per week, you’re basically an unlifting slug.
And others still beat the drum for intensity over everything. Not big enough yet? Lift heavier, you trousered ape.
The bottom line is it’s an extreme world out there and many people have extreme opinions.
Today’s guest Mark Rippetoe is one of those people, but he also has over 40 years of experience with strength training and coaching and is the creator of the iconic weightlifting program Starting Strength.
In this episode, Mark and I talk workout programming, including the needs of beginners versus advanced lifters, how to know you’re no longer a novice trainee, how age affects volume needs and recovery, and more.
    Buckle up!
11:13 - What is the stress recovery adaptation cycle?
19:28 - Is progressive overload the best way to get gains for a beginner?
31:57 - What is junk volume?

Great post! Been training and coaching for 30+ years. Love reading and listening to so called exerts on training. There is no exact way for every person. Mark did a great job of explaining novice vs older experienced lifters. People give programs that have 5 exercises of 5 sets for a person who has just started training. Or squating 3x per week for the 60 year old advanced lifter. Common sense should drive how we train and coach.

Having started the program more than once, just begin with novice linear progression. In a week or two or however long, when you're no longer able to add weight to each exercise, it'll be time to make changes. He now has 2 advanced beginner workouts that lead up to "intermediate". They help balance out the progression differences in the different exercises and allow more recovery time after deadlifts. It's been worthwhile for me to be humble and start at the beginning. It goes fast.

You might try sets of 5 reps for strength and add weight regularly, but they say that squats, bench, deadlifts, and press can increase for years.
There are no competitions using machines for strength, they’re more often used for bodybuilding, and maybe assistance exercises for strength training.
You may not be able to increase strength for years on machines.

NOOOOOO.... leg extension is shit, leg press is shit, people can NOT squat even HALF of what they put on the leg press machine, plus the range of motion is normally shit for most people, they don't even know how far to lower the damn thing, and they don't even know where to place the feet...
there is no substitute for SQUATTING.
There is a huge respect people give to having a bar on your back with a weight surpassing what YOU weigh, or twice your weight, or more, there is and cannot be any bullshit with a bar loaded like that on YOUR back, if there is any goofing, there are drastic consequences... I have seen people "leg pressing" and texting, or having a good ol conversation with someone near by!!
Same with the press and the bench press and if you're deadlifting over 1.5 your body weight. Though your body weight is a marker, it is NOT and should NOT be a limiting factor.

@@Damian_Materowski that's only because the muscles outpace connective tissue etc on drugs. That's why heavily enhanced bodybuilders do 50 rep sets. The burn and the products that build up in the blood have a huge effect for people on gear. Not really for naturals. Naturals need lower reps. No more than maybe 8 rep sets on major compounds and of course isolation movements 10 to 12 or so. To clarify... Ronnie colemans muscle were strong but everything else is under immense strain. Bodybuilders on drugs that don't get hurt do really light weights to create a lot of metabolites in the blood which anabolic act on greatly. The same doesn't apply in naturals very much. We need lower reps. Plus if you slowly work up its fine. Plus the bone density benefits etc
