    Giorgio Giugiaro said something like "A five year old can design a Ferrari. The challenge is making a car that costs nothing and still looks good and performs well". I think Renault nailed with the R5 what Fiat once did with the Fiat Panda. Well done!

    • @chucku00
      @chucku00 Před 3 měsíci +3

      Giugiaro also nailed the design of the original VW Golf (and Scirocco), just like Gandini did with the Supercinq in 1984. BTW, contrary to what is said in the video, the Supercinq isn't a facelift of the original R5 (transverse engine, different platform and suspension setup).

      @chucku00 Před 3 měsíci

      @uiPineappleExpress Yup, and it's totally distinct from the first generation on a technical standpoint except some engines (Cléon fonte engines family) that have been modified for a transverse implantation. If the Supercinq was only a facelift, many spare parts would have been interchangeable which isn't the case. The Supercinq shares a lot more spare parts with the R9/R11 (US Renault Alliance/Encore) models than with the original R5.

    My memory of the Renault 5 is quite unique. I was stationed on a US Navy vessel in the late 80s and we docked in Marseille. Another Navy vessel was on the pier directly behind us. When it was time for both of us to leave, the ship astern weighed (raised) its anchor and a Renault 5 came up with the anchor. Only in Marseille.

    Hello
    Thank you for your video. The analysis of the car’s design is very relevant and very interesting.
    Today, as with the first generation of R5, the marketing target is 1) young people and 2) the young mother who must transport her children and her shopping.
    In the minds of Americans, there is still a natural association between power, car size and safety. European cars are designed for generally tighter environments and safety is more associated with control of the car such as its speed, brakes, handling, etc.
    The new R5 EV is suitable for urban to semi-urban use. If consumers are interested, why not see them in cities across the United States. It is also a question of usage mentality.

    Renault probably isn't as big a name as Tesla and Nissan because their EVarent sold in all markets but they've been in the game as long as Tesla and Nissan so alongside still selling the Clio it doesn't make sense to have this be an I.C.E. car. to me.

    This video is a mess. Throughout the whole video, you repeat that the 1984 mk2 is a facelift. It was not a facelift [a facelift is when you grab a car, change/redesign some parts, to make it fresher and make it last more years].
    The 1984 mk2 is a 100% new car.
    While the original 1972 was based on the 1961 Renault 4 platform and engines, disposing the engine longitudinally ahead of the wheels, the 1984 mk2 was based in a shortened version of the 100% new platform firstly unveiled in the 1981 Renault 9, which displaces the engines transversally.
    You also totally mix it up when showing dashoards. The interior you're showing at 12:00 is mk2 one, not the mk1 - which, not only was different from this, as it had 2 versions (1 in the 1972, and another in the 1979 facelift).

    Gauge cluster is absolutely too big and clunky, for absolutely no reason. And it's not even really reminiscent of the original, which looked way different and was lower. It should at least 3 inches lower in the new EV. You feel like you're sitting in front of a television you are looking over.

    "EV driving experience" comment is wrong. Apple to Apple, EV have better performance. Torque is immediate. Zero to 100km in a cheap EV can be 7 sec, and in more expensive models 3 sec. EV are fun to drive. Very fast and sporty EV are available if you have the money. Unless you like a noisy, smelly, jurky drive, look into EV.

    Schools still out for me on this new Renault.
    It's up against the Fiat 500e and Mini e, both of which have this tight market segment sewn up, for quite a few years now.
    Looks a little Suzuki Swift/Honda e/mini-Hyundai Ionic 5/Peugeot 208e front facia rip off ... to me.
    Simply doesn't look "french" enough. Renault enough. Nice try by Renault though.

    They need to rebadge this as a nissan, manufacture it in North America, and do some small styling changes, and use the parts bin to make this happen.
