Vitthal is vishnu or Krishna. There was a guy called Pundlik in Pandharpur village. And he was a very very much devoted towards the god.He used to chant the god's name day and night without fail. And vishnuji became happy with his devotion and he decided to visit the Pundlik one day. However when he reached his house it was a night time and Pundlik was massaging his old parents' feet. The God came and he called him. Pundlik replied,"who is it?" The god replied, "I am Vishnu, the god whom you pray to and whose name you keep chanting all the time. I have come to grant you happiness and prosperity and everything you wish or desire." To this Pundlik replied, "whoever you are, please come back later because I am serving my mom and dad right now and I cannot attend to you." The god surprised andthought that maybe Pundlik misunderstood him or that he thought someone might be playing prank with him so the god again told him who he was and even after multiple attempts to get Pundlik to come out, god couldn't persuade him. So finally he asked Pundlik," If you do not want to come out the least you could do is offer me something to sit on." To that Pundlik threw a brick towards the god and again asked the god not to disturb him as he was busy serving his parents and chanting the god's name. The god vishnu became very happy seeing Pundlik and his devotion towards him and his parents and he stood on the brick putting his hands on the hips. Afterwards when Pundlik's parents were asleep he came out and he thought he upset the god and he started crying. Hence Vishnu told him that he is the true devotee because even after so many attempts to lure him out and offering him so many things he did not give up his suties towards his parents. And serving one's parents is the utmost devotion. So he granted Pundlik a boon that the god will be staying in the Pandharpur village forever on the Brick to symbolise the devotion of Pundlik and inspire everyone. Since brick means Vit in marathi, the vishnu came to know by a new name "Vitthal". Thats why the name Vitthal. And "Pandhari" is a short name for Pandharpur.

In a jugalbandi it is very important to give space to the other. One needs to know perfectly when to come in and when to exit and how to moderate the pitch and tone while the other is taking lead. Then both singers are able to create a perfectly harmonious musical atmosphere where both shine. They focus on the blending of their singing more than the individual bits. This is one such performance. Such gems they both are.

In modern times, audience has started clapping breaking the ambience of the raga, in earlier days only reactions would be "wah wah", "aha" that wouldn't override the musical tones of the performance. Also artists have now started playing for the gallery with more gimmicky performance than for better music.
The performance of this duo is very good but one must remember that the original tune was sung by Rahul's grandfather. Must give credit to the composer that it still captivates the audiences & singers for these many generations and I am sure it will for many more to come.

This is an excellent example of "duel" (but in positive sense of cooperation and not a fight) in Indian classical music, that's why you will observe that this song contains lots of "aalaaps" (that is notes without words) compared to same song when they sing it individually !

Geet Ramayan is the greatest poetry in Marathi literature. Each composition is an epitome of a classic literature. Song "paradhin ahe jagati" literally teaches the philosophy of life where Lord Ram is consoling and advising his young brother.
