This is exactly what annoyed me too. He even describes almost all good and positive features by using negative words like "doesn't disappoint, but.." about the best display on the market, "it isn't perfect, but" about One UI that some even see as being better than stock Android. Everything about the way Dan talks about the S10 has a negative undertone.
And you wouldn't be. What's so surprising. I know a lot of loyal Samsung and Apple fans that if their companies made paper phones they would probably buy it. Fewer people like me buy whatever phones we like no matter the brand.
Joshua Greene he’s not lying. Notch is better in my opinion. The cutout hole pushes the info on the top right towards the center. Wtf is that? When you’re watching a video full screen, you’re cropping a lot of the video to fill the entire aspect ratio of the screen. Nobody wants to crop so much of content, you’re just doing it to prove a point that a notch is more “intrusive”. In reality people watch videos at the videos aspect ratio.
Whatever he says does make sense and true to life. camera cutout doesn't make any sense. Because it blocks the whole corner area in the phone either it should have been in the middle as a camera punch or the small notch that would have make sense. But this apparently not.

@@Luistheorphan innovation for the sake of it is not innovation. That dual aperture is didn't make that big of a difference in picture quality. Pixel 3 is still better than the s10 in terms of point and shoot photos. Laser cutout is a manufacturing achievement, not an innovation. Touch screen was an innovation, computational photography was an innovation. I still think s10 is an excellent phone, don't get me wrong, but they are not innovating anything, neither is any other company. Folding phones look promising though, now, that's innovation.

Every aspect you just mentioned was on the market before the S10 was released. The 5 cameras? We had that many many months ago with for example Huawei's smartphones. The viable aperture? Existed on previous Samsung devices. The ability to charge your accessoires? Again, Huawei did it before.
This is literally the worst review I've ever seen on The Verge for long time. The guy is using manipulative words to make the phone sounds like "meh.. not impressive enough" like WTF dude? I've seen lots of review on Galaxy S10+ way better than this one and they were all fair in terms of mentioning the good and the bad about the phone. However, in your case, you mention the bad and when it comes to the good you either say "as expected" or "that doesn't disappoint". Thumbs down for that video!👎🏻
This review is pain to watch. Biased review and you seems like hating on everything about this phone. You basically means if someone really need android then this phone is fine, but iphone still everything.
Aaron Cho I’ve had the s10+ for about a week now and I haven’t had a problem with the fingerprint scanner at all I was using the IPhone X before this n the Face ID was more troublesome than the fingerprint scanner on the s10+ Oh and the camera hole on the s10+ is much better than the iPhone notch, it’s less distracting when using the phone in landscape
Uhm.. go watch the XS Max review again, they literally make fun of the fact that it looks identical to the X. They bash the names, they bash the fact that there basically isn't anything new or exciting about them at all.. except that they are very fast and still great. They basically continously bash it for all things irritating. Does get a great score, like this does as well.. but don't say much great about them with enthusiasm.

Bixby button can't be remapped to launch Google assistant. That blows. Camera quality at night isn't as good as some competitors. i.e. Pixel 3. Bloatware is still kinda a issue. Although a third party launcher could fix that in a snap. Battery is average for the size. Nothing new. OS updates will be slow. Would be my main gripe with it. Again my issue isn't with its faults my issue is with the conduct of the review. Just bad.

Phones should be compared as devices and not by their market share and price range. iPhone's were the standard once, not anymore. Apple isn't even a trend setter anymore nor they are inovating.

More like a Apple fan boy doing a android phone review. Face ID better than ultrasound finger print scanner? The top notch in iPhone better looking than the small camera cutout on the side? It should be the other way round!
THe thing is face id is inherently flawed, not the say the scanner is bad, but the idea is a total failure, it needs a pick up and a swipe up from the very bottom which requires way more steps and adds more trouble to just unlock the phone, face id cant even unlock properly when the phone is lying on the table, this is why im glad that they abandoned 3d scanning in the s10 completely cuz its more like a waste of space, but guess apple users couldnt figure it out themselves

Tbh the teardrop notch ala OnePlus 6T is beautiful. The singular cutout notch is 2nd place for me tho. When it comes to Face ID - if they only made it unlock the phone instantly, instead of requiring a stupid swipe, then it would be really good, however, I still prefer fingerprint scanners, just like most people.

it depends on the user because I have the OnePlus 6t and some people say the fingerprint scanner sometimes doesn't register but I haven't had that issue.

That's because the guy on everything Apple pro said he used to use Android phones back in the day he said he had the Motorola Droid an HTC Evo. The other iPhone guy Keaton from techsmart even said he was switching to the Samsung phone also.

Hamza. H how is a 2D face scanner going to be more secure ? FaceID is fast and is the most secure way of unlocking your phone. Samsung’s FPS doesn’t work with tempered glass protectors. They have included a useless face unlock that is not secure. Why have it in the first place ?
Hamza. H ummm sorry but S10’s FPS doesn’t work with most of the tempered glass screen protectors (which are better than plastic films). Also this FPS has a very small area that can bd used to trigger it and as demonstrated in this video doesn’t work on ‘soft’ presses. FaceID requires nothing other than your face to unlock and is obviously more secure than a fingerprint 1/1000000 vs 1/50000). It works with temper glass, works for people without fingerprint and also works when your finger is wrapped in bandage or is covered with gloves, unlike an FPS)
Interesting that you seem to be the only reviewer that has had an issue with the finger print scanner. Almost every other review talks about it being fast and accurate.
This review was hard to understand. Almost everything came with a caveat, as if it hurts you to even think of giving it points. This phone is the best combination of features we've ever seen for most people: Basically by any metric - screen, camera, usability, battery, performance, software - the phone holds up against 99% of the competition, but the main reason I like it is that it doesn't make anti-user design choices. Headphone jacks, expandable storage, stereo speakers, fingerprint readers, wireless charging, no rocking side to side due to stupidly designed camera bump - are all things other phone makers keep skipping, yet for users they make a big difference. Rather than making us live with stupidity, this phone just makes sensible choices (particularly in the S10E) to make life easier. All software complaints solved in two seconds with Nova Launcher > Hide apps.
Aside: Why do reviewers always complain about stupid base software experiences? 90% of software gripes are easily fixed by using another launcher, so instead of complaining in every review, just suggest installing Nova Launcher in every review.

(I agree it's subjective and neither is an actual solution). 2) You mention you prefer iPhone's face id. 3) iPhone's HDR and more. 4) And the way you talked about the price of S10 being high is as if only iPhones have the right to be expensive while providing half the features. 5) iPhones come with so much stupid bloatware like compass, movies, etc so it is not specific to Samsung. Never heard it being mentioned in iPhone reviews. FYI: I am an iPhone user.

@Sasa M i used both iPhone x and it's competitor. Android competitor are simply better for customizations lag free. In iPhone X 4k video taken from the phone cannot be uploaded to CZcams because CZcams app crashes in iPhone.

Pyry Miettinen galaxy s10e is basically non-cut phone, exept maybe under display fingerprint sensor. Compare it with iphone xr, which is basically worse in some departments than iphone 8 plus from 2017.
I thought the review was really positive. Even the title of "the anti iPhone' IMO is a mark of success if you are in the camp that the current iPhones are nothing special. Personally iPhones haven't been compelling to me for years, don't get me wrong they are good phone's but them asking $1000 for an iPhone X was crazy. Now that the $1K seal has been broken I feel what you are getting for $1000 is so much more than Apple and like the Verge mentioned really you have to be tied to iMessage or iOS in general to not try a Galaxy this year. Heck Samsung even has a headphone jack lol!

Pixel 3 is still better than the s10 in terms of point and shoot photos. Laser cutout is a manufacturing achievement, not an innovation. Touch screen was an innovation, computational photography was an innovation. I still think s10 is an excellent phone, don't get me wrong, but they are not innovating anything, neither is any other company. Folding phones look promising though, now, that's innovation.

Every aspect you just mentioned was on the market before the S10 was released. The 5 cameras? We had that many many months ago with for example Huawei's smartphones. The viable aperture? Existed on previous Samsung devices. The ability to charge your accessoires? Again, Huawei did it before.

This is literally the worst review I've ever seen on The Verge for long time. The guy is using manipulative words to make the phone sounds like "meh.. not impressive enough" like WTF dude? I've seen lots of review on Galaxy S10+ way better than this one and they were all fair in terms of mentioning the good and the bad about the phone. However, in your case, you mention the bad and when it comes to the good you either say "as expected" or "that doesn't disappoint". Thumbs down for that video!👎🏻

I was using the IPhone X before this n the Face ID was more troublesome than the fingerprint scanner on the s10+
Oh and the camera hole on the s10+ is much better than the iPhone notch, it’s less distracting when using the phone in landscape

They bash the names, they bash the fact that there basically isn't anything new or exciting about them at all.. except that they are very fast and still great. Although a third party launcher could fix that in a snap. Battery is average for the size. Nothing new. OS updates will be slow. Would be my main gripe with it. Again my issue isn't with its faults my issue is with the conduct of the review. Just bad.

THe thing is face id is inherently flawed, not the say the scanner is bad, but the idea is a total failure, it needs a pick up and a swipe up from the very bottom which requires way more steps and adds more trouble to just unlock the phone, face id cant even unlock properly when the phone is lying on the table, this is why im glad that they abandoned 3d scanning in the s10 completely cuz its more like a waste of space, but guess apple users couldnt figure it out themselves

Face iD is objectively better than fingerprint sensors. It unlocks instantaneously when it sees you. In-display fingerprints are always hit or miss.

Tbh the teardrop notch ala OnePlus 6T is beautiful. The singular cutout notch is 2nd place for me tho. it depends on the user because I have the OnePlus 6t and some people say the fingerprint scanner sometimes doesn't register but I haven't had that issue.

Hamza. H ummm sorry but S10’s FPS doesn’t work with most of the tempered glass screen protectors (which are better than plastic films). Also this FPS has a very small area that can bd used to trigger it and as demonstrated in this video doesn’t work on ‘soft’ presses. FaceID requires nothing other than your face to unlock and is obviously more secure than a fingerprint 1/1000000 vs 1/50000). It works with temper glass, works for people without fingerprint and also works when your finger is wrapped in bandage or is covered with gloves, unlike an FPS)

Interesting that you seem to be the only reviewer that has had an issue with the finger print scanner. Almost every other review talks about it being fast and accurate.
This review was hard to understand. Almost everything came with a caveat, as if it hurts you to even think of giving it points. This phone is the best combination of features we've ever seen for most people:
Basically by any metric - screen, camera, usability, battery, performance, software - the phone holds up against 99% of the competition, but the main reason I like it is that it doesn't make anti-user design choices. Headphone jacks, expandable storage, stereo speakers, fingerprint readers, wireless charging, no rocking side to side due to stupidly designed camera bump - are all things other phone makers keep skipping, yet for users they make a big difference. Rather than making us live with stupidity, this phone just makes sensible choices (particularly in the S10E) to make life easier. All software complaints solved in two seconds with Nova Launcher > Hide apps.
Aside: Why do reviewers always complain about stupid base software experiences? 90% of software gripes are easily fixed by using another launcher, so instead of complaining in every review, just suggest installing Nova Launcher in every review.

I thought the review was really positive. Even the title of "the anti iPhone' IMO is a mark of success if you are in the camp that the current iPhones are nothing special. Personally iPhones haven't been compelling to me for years, don't get me wrong they are good phone's but them asking $1000 for an iPhone X was crazy. Now that the $1K seal has been broken I feel what you are getting for $1000 is so much more than Apple and like the Verge mentioned really you have to be tied to iMessage or iOS in general to not try a Galaxy this year. Heck Samsung even has a headphone jack lol!
