    I couldn't believe last summer when I drove down 805 S to 8 E heading toward SDSU and didn't see Qualcomm Stadium in view. I was saddened to my core. I could even see it outside of my dorm bathroom in Chapultepec every day.
    It's not necessarily Qualcomm that I need, but I'd like to see a behemoth off the freeway still. Given that this is slightly further north and will be barricaded by some buildings, I don't know if that'll be the case anymore.
    Plus, in its current state this stadium feels very uninspired. Maybe I'll feel differently when I see a packed game there at night. Lots of confusing decisions made with this one though, and it just all but solidifies the departure of the Chargers from San Diego.

      everything being chariback is why the capacity is that small.. I remember watching the stadiums in Italy drastically reduce in size back in 1990 as all the tiered benches were replaced wiht numbered seating. Naples went from a high around 88k to 69 or so, and then a decade or two later lost the uppermost tier to seismic restrictions.. It is now below 60K So sad.

  • @carlosbardales4179
    @carlosbardales4179 Před rokem +18

    SDSU has an opportunity to be the main game in town as a university. Chargers are gone and no NBA team neither. Nice little stadium that can most likely expand if the ticket sales call for it. As for the chairback.. that is the way to go.. long gone are the days where people will just jam themselves up on bleachers just to root for their college. Students and general fans require more now days. Just one note, more and more college stadiums are going the chair-back way. I know for a fact the the University of Louisville has an on-campus stadium that sits over 60k and all are chair-back seats. Just fyi...

    • @ZakhadWOW
      @ZakhadWOW Před rokem

      @@_Jake.From.Statefarm_ it is actually uncommon considering the number of sports/leagues and sheer number of teams over the last century. However, owner greed isnt the only factor. It does appear to those of us not local to the area, that for whatever reason the politicians and/or voters of greater San Diego havent had the will to make the hard choices to keep them there. Perhaps it woullnt have been worth it in the long run, but the voters/politicians dont have much defense when it comes to the unwillingness to replace an extremely old Jack Murphy/Qualcomm stadium.. I mean, they had to know it would need to be done. Now the TRULY terrible examples are when the Colts left Baltimore in the middle of the night so that no one would really know what was up, and then of course the original browns bailing for Baltimore (ironically).

    • @_Jake.From.Statefarm_
      @_Jake.From.Statefarm_ Před rokem +1

      @@ZakhadWOW While I'm totally aware of how hard it has been to get things done over the years in terms of large sports projects. The truth is, we have gotten the ones done that we wanted to get done. With the exception of the Chargers. That was mostly their decision. They blamed a lot of that on the city. They purposely put out measures that they knew wouldn't pass. They were offered the Qualcomm site. They wanted downtown, which would have taken years to restructure the MTS station, parking, etc, etc. The worst part was they had the opportunity to build when Petco was voted on. They chose to renovate Jack Murphy with the hopes it would last longer and they'd get a more modern stadium in it's place down the road. Well, then good ole Dean took over.. His father had vision. His son, did not. He didn't even to make a single decision in his life until he took the team over. He said as much in his book. Since that move. The Chargers still haven't built a stadium, they are renting. SDSU won the bid for the new stadium (over soccercity which would have brought an MLS team, however that apparently is still in the works as Garber is very interested in SD for obvious reasons) We've gotten Wave and Loyal. Granted they aren't an NFL team but if you get an MLS team you have now 3 major league teams and SDSU should be pushing for a major conference. Which is good in terms of football. They got it done with their basketball area as well. Now, you have a redevelopment of the Sports Arena which currently houses Gulls and Soccers but with a newly built area you can push in the coming years for NBA and NHL expansions. Remember when the NBA left San Diego, the NBA was in the shitter. Playoff games were taped and reran after TV shows..
      So if you throw out the NFL (which like I said, just moved 4 teams in the last 10 years) which is absolute asinine. You could potentially end up with MLB,MLS, NBA, NHL, NWSL, USL, Big5... (even if you take one or 2 of those away like NHL and keep minor league that is much better than just having an NFL team with a shitty owner who isn't dedicated to his city)
      So I'd say, the city has came through, though be it takes a long time and probably selling body parts, but none the less. When needed. The CHARGERS specifically, that was on THEM! They had every opportunity to fork up the cash, build, and stay. They chose a bigger market, to rent, and likely sell the team and walk away filthy rich.

      There’s already a sports arena under construction in San Diego. Front Wave Arena is being built in Oceanside for an indoor soccer team and second home of the AHL San Diego Gulls. If San Diego did ever build an arena I doubt the NBA would have an expansion team team here. The city already lost the Clippers to LA & the Rockets to Houston. There are more chances of having an MLS team rather than NBA since there’s no huge market in San Diego sports for an NBA team. Southern California already has two NBA teams in LA (which LA is a huge market when it comes to sports).

      Hi SD Rob, not sure what your comment is regarding other than why there's so much space. Is this correct? If I am interpreting your response, SDSU needed to get the stadium dome as quickly as possible to get ready for the first scrimmage tomorrow then next week is the first home game. Now that the stadium is up and running they construction on the rest of the projects will begin. The classroom buildings and housing, other sports fields and commercial businesses are set to be on the property, according to the master plan that was presented before The Murph came down. Now the boys have a place to play thier ball game and the school can begin setting and scheduling concerts for the venue. Any idea what's going to happen with the old field where they use to play?

      It is not a city stadium. It's a university stadium. SDSU averaged just under 30,000 people in home attendance (in San Diego), so the stadium is perfect for the school size. It's the average size for the Mountain West Conference schools.

      The Chargers got fucked over by SD politicians, and they are in LA for good. Whoever Spanos selling his team to will keep the team in LA. San Diego had its chances but politicians and voters said no to the Downtown Stadium proposal and would've said no to their other proposal. They wanted SDSU and the Padres. Kroenke wanted the Chargers into SoFi Stadium because he didn't want the Raiders there.
