Video about the city of Angra do Heroísmo, located on the island of Terceira in the Azores archipelago. Founded in the 15th century, it became, in just over a century, one of the main points of confluence of the great international maritime routes in the era of overseas expansion. Angra grew according to an innovative urban plan at the time in Portugal, adopting an orthogonal grid that followed the rationalist principles of the Renaissance. The riches that passed through here aroused the greed of pirates and corsairs, leading to its fortification.
Angra do Heroísmo is a city of glory and beauty, but also a centre of tragedy, given its position in the middle of the ocean, exposed to the hardships of the climate, and its volcanic origin, which causes eruptions and earthquakes. This permanent coexistence with the unfathomable and unpredictable forces of nature has led the people of Terceira, like most Azoreans, to look at faith in a very particular way, forging traditions that favour communitarianism, the celebration of belief and the joy of life at all times.
The city centre of Angra do Heroísmo has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
