I love American Girl dolls and accessories. I just started them as a collection a few years ago. It has become an addiction! I have so many now! So many that my hubby built me a dollhouse for them. So they all have their own bedrooms! Super fun!

I had a skirt that looked just like that! As for the buttons... does anyone remember the Pizza Hut Bookit program? That was a HUGE thing when I was in school, to wear the pin and have all the star stickers filled in. Good times...

Congrats on getting Courtney! She is a cute doll and her accessories are a lot of fun. I love American Girl dolls and currently own 34 of them...they're a little addictive. I'd say my second favorite 18" doll brand is the Adora Amazing Girls (Amazon exclusive), because they have very detailed hands and feet, and poseable heads. Third would be Our Generation. The dolls are very cute and I especially love the outfits and accessories. Unfortunately, I feel like the doll quality is sometimes lacking. The last three I bought had very bad hair. I just ordered my first Via-E doll, so I'm anxious to see what her quality is like. Maureen is Courtney's mom, and Courtney lives with her mom, stepdad, and stepsister Tina.

I have a 7 year old. I was psyched when Courtney came out. I knew exactly which doll she'd be getting! haha! I am in loooooooove with her! I wish we could afford all of her accessories. They're all so on point with who Courtney is. I am 38 and I still have my Samantha doll. She is reaaaaaal dusty. I've been considering sending her off to the American Girl Doll hospital to get a refresh. My daughter would love to have Samantha too.

Then I got rid of those and got 2 American Girl dolls. Now I have 9 dolls and plan on getting more. I have boxes and boxes of clothes. Clothes are my favorite things. I don’t live near a store. One day, I want to go there. The American Girl items are so addictive. I haven’t bought clothes for a year, because I want more doll items. I love my dolls.

AG Dolls have always been my go-to collector doll, since I got my first ones (Felicity and Molly) at 9 for my birthday. I adore them and I think they are such a great outlet for creativity. When Pleasant Co was bought out by Mattel, I do feel the quality of the historical elements (the research, the books) did decline. Now Mattel seems to have compartmentalized the development of the various dolls, so when a collection works, it's amazing (like Courtney) while there are some that just bomb (Caroline). I also think there's an interesting dichotomy where Barbie is getting more inclusive and diverse in terms of offerings, while American Girl routinely whiffs it - look up the history of the Gabriel doll for example.
But there is still just something about the dolls that really inspires me. They are great for crafting and photostories and I feel like the wigs are by far the best if you actually want to "do" your dolls' hair.
If you want a more "grown up" version of American Girl, there was a doll line called "Ellowyne Wilde" (I think by Tonner?) that had a similar feel in terms of face and expression, and I noticed many AG collectors gravitated towards the Ellowyne dolls as well when they wanted a more mature doll. Ellowynes are resin fashion doll, and the character was a true eccentric. I definitely recommend checking out some Ellowynes (if you can get your hands on one) as they are also very high quality and with lovely facepaint and super high quality clothing.

You are so fun and cute! You're totally twinning with Courtney, and I am here for it! I have been collecting the historical dolls. So far, I have Julie and Maryellen. I just got Courtney bc I am an 80s kid! Since AG launched in the 80s, Courtney has her own mini Molly doll that comes with a mini Molly book. Of course, I had to get it. 🫣 AG is an addition. You can't stop at one doll or one outfit. You gotta have it all!

I LOVE that you're starting to cover American Girl Dolls. I collect BJDs, Pullips, Blythe, Integrity Toys, etc.. but I actually like American Girl dolls the most. Their size and amount of detail they put into clothing and accessories is something any doll collector can appreciate. I love all the different head molds too. You should totally watch her stop-motion movie on the American Girl CZcams channel, it's adorable! The cloth bodies bothered me at first too, but you get used to it over time, and it makes them more cuddly tbh. Hope to see more soon!

I have my life boy doll. The American girl is very expensive. I was considering a used one on eBay but changed my mind . The ones I really find interest in is the repaint version created by Selene's glamorous house of dolls . She charges 90 to 125 dollars to repainting American girl faces and does a great job to make them look better, but combine the cost of the doll with the repaint. that is really very high. This might be a job, but her hair is washable and brushable . You can wash all that product our and do her curls again and make them look more natural if you can do it.

Courtney is so special to me. She’s the one who is closest in age to me in her time. I recommend reading her book, the authors did an amazing job of recreating the environment of the time and what was top of mind for people… I very much remember where I was when the space shuttle exploded; I was in the waiting line at the school cafeteria 😢.
Some of her clothes are copies of stuff I had in the 80’s (the suspender skirt and blouse with the tie, the lace leggings, the oversized blazer, acid washed jeans and jean jacket etc) and I had a portable cassette player just like her as well as a Caboodles box for my makeup and hair stuff . It’s sad that a lot of her collection is sold out. I still want to get as much as I can find.

I don't collect AG, but since I know that their shoes and fashions are pricey, and they are such large realistic dolls, I wonder why people don't just thrift baby clothes and shoes at charity shops, to dress them and save a ton of money. But maybe people aren't worried about saving money? This is what I did when my doggie was little and I wanted to dress her. I went to Goodwill, got baby and toddler clothing, and just modded it when needed. It was super cute, and much cheaper than buying pet clothes! Even if you want brand new baby stuff, I'm pretty sure you can get it at affordable prices at places like Walmart etc. But again, maybe I'm the only one with money worries in the doll world.

As for 18" dolls, I tend to favor the Our Generation dolls. For their price point ($25-35) the quality is impressive and their diversity of face molds, hair color, skin color, etc. is great. My issue with American Girl is that most of their characters with actual backstories are blondes with blue eyes with the occasional POC doll. They also need more redheads in my opinion, as I tend to favor pale red-haired dolls. If they had a pale redhead with a closed-mouth face sculpt where I did not have to get a OOAK for $200, I would be more forgiving of them. I also find their mouths weird for some reason, so their more common, open-mouthed face molds are a huge turnoff for me. The My Life As dolls have unappealing faces to me and a very basic range of diversity, so I will probably never get one. Journey Girls seem cute enough though and I feel tempted to get the redhead in the line. Face sculpt wise, Our Generation trumps the other brands for me. And it's understandable that most 18" dolls lack makeup, as they literally represent 9-10 year old girls. Kids do not realistically wear makeup.

Their quality and timelessness is amazing. And the $200 customization OOAK option sounds so tempting honestly. I have not looked through the options on their website in a while so I have no idea if they have a closed-mouth face sculpt pale redhead or not. I only have my childhood AG dolls and am curious to see how/if they have changed or improved. But I feel they should have more diversity in their dolls that come with their own stories, as the overwhelming majority of those dolls have some shade of blond hair.

I think as much as they cost their whole body should be hard plastic, I feel like the cloth upper body does not look right and it kind of makes them look cheap especially if they are wearing a sleeveless or spaghetti strap tops.

    • @phadenswandemil4345
      @phadenswandemil4345 Před 3 lety

Aesthetically, I do understand why hard plastic bodies / full vinyl bodies are more appealing, but i prefer the cloth body.
Mostly because of nostalgia; another reason why I prefer cloth bodies is (I'm not sure) but i think they are much easier to open up. So you can easily replace damaged limbs, tightened loose limbs, remove the head to rewig the doll, add in stuffing...
I'm not in the US, so ag dolls cost a small fortune for me and i don't have the doll hospital, so it's important that i can easily repair my dolls when they're super old or when I buy dolls secondhand that need to be fixed up. It's easier for customisers too, i guess.

It's not product in her hair it's just how her hair is styled with the very curly hair. Whatever you do don't brush out her hair expcally country's hair it'll get fixyou and ruined and you'd have to send her to the doll hospital for a new head which is $50-$60 plus shipping. I'm not going to get Counry because of her hair is so curly it's harder to care for and for countney being your fist doll I'd suggest watch CZcams videos in how to take care of her.

‘82 baby here too! I remember when AG only had 3 characters (I think it started out with Kristen, Samantha and Molly) and were $80 without the accessory pack and that was stupid expensive in the early 90s. I never had an AG but I love that the founder was a history teacher who wanted to make history more accessible and interesting to young girls.
