  • American Girl Courtney Doll Collection Haul - 1986 Memories. I am mildly offended that there is a historical American Girl Doll from when I was in college!! But I am really loving all the details in Courtney's collection.

    I was born in '94, but when Courtney was released, I had to sit there and realize that the next historical doll they come out with is probably going to be for 2000 and I had to lie down for a bit. I'm not ready for my childhood to be historical!!!

    So in the study of history, there's this thing called the 40-year rule. Basically, as far as historians are concerned, anything that happened less than 40 years ago should not be subject to historical analysis. There are reasons for this, but basically, historians like to know the effects of an event, and under 40 years is considered to recent for that to be possible. However, now that it is 2020, 1980 is 40 years away and, technically, a part of history. I think they jumped the gun a bit putting Courtney in 1986, but I do think someone involved in the process of making new history dolls at American Girl was aware of this rule.

    • @DamiAnimated
      @DamiAnimated Před 3 lety +8

      That makes so much sense but I think American Girl makes certain historical dolls to match with the age of kids parents. For example: Julie the 1974 doll was introduced in 2007 when a lot of parents with younger kids had been kids in the 70s.
      Also before Courtney the other historical dolls had a 4 in their year, like 1974, 1954, etc, but I think they deliberately made Courtney 1986 so that her historical event could be the Challenger explosion.

    • @clararose1922
      @clararose1922 Před 3 lety +8

      The reason they chose 1986 is because American Girl started with 3 dolls in 1986 under pleasant company with Molly, Samantha and Kirsten :)

    In the UK 'fanny' means something totally different. The child in me smirks every time. I was born in 1972 so I was growing up in the eighties. I would say you are missing a rara skirt.

    Courtney is one of the most beautiful doll ever! I grew up in the 80’s so for me she’s so historically accurate. All the outfits are amazing! I love the colors and all the mix and match pieces.

    as a girl coder, not too sure about the whole girls can code theme? i feel like it would have fit much better with a GOTY (like how luciana vega was very into STEM with space) because then it could bring the more modern reality of getting girls into coding while in courtney’s day it wouldn’t be as advanced as it is now

    • @MyWorldMelissa
      @MyWorldMelissa  Před 3 lety +21

      That's how I felt. I actually did a whole rant about it, but I edited it out. In 1986 people in high school and college were just learning how to use computers and do basic programing in class. I don't think we had a sense yet that girls would fall behind in that arena.

    • @PsychoTrin
      @PsychoTrin Před 3 lety +4

      I am a girl gamer and I was born in the 80's. I saw a lot of stigma in the 90's at school. Girls cant game, girls don't know this stuff. We had computers at school and were begining to learn to use them but mostly just played Oregon trail
      .. So I think they mixed the late 90's with the 80's...

    • @Joy6168
      @Joy6168 Před rokem

      I noticed the ‘90’s twins Isabel and Nikki have BookIt, that’s more ‘80’s to ‘90’s and would’ve fit into Courtney’s collection better than the STEM emphasis.

    '81 baby here! I've been on the fence about Courtney as are/were my friends. We were thinking about getting some of the 80s items we liked and just getting dolls that looked more like us in 86....but there's no dainty, frilly smock dresses and play suits out there! I would also love to see other 80s toys besides the care bears. Mattel would make a killing with AG sized Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, CPK(though made by Coleco)She-Ra etc. Probably not going to get those. I also had a spiral perm, but I didn't get mine until 89-90, and I had NO IDEA how to use a hair pick! What a mess. I was so thankful for my blow-out a few months later, haha!!

I grew up in the 1970s and was in high school in the early '80s, so I remember how things were. I loved her skirt! I had a Levi denim jacket (not acid wash) that I wore for years. I bought it myself as I was able to earn money during the potato harvest (I live in Northern Maine, potato country). Levi's were the "it" jeans in high school. If you wore other types of jeans you weren't normal. :)
    I used a fanny pack back in the '80s and they are for sale again in Walmart! I haven't seen anyone with one but I actually use one when I work as it holds my phone under a clear front pocket and my small tools are in the main pocket. It is tie dye color and although it may look dorky it is very convenient for me.

    I had shoes exactly like those at high school in the 80s, so I think they are very accurate. I love this doll, but it was very unusual for girls to do coding in the 80s. I studied computer programming in the 90s. Love this doll!

    Awe she's adorable. Can't wait for my daughter to unbox her this Christmas. I had to get the high tops, her accessories and the caboodle to go with her. She'll be turning 11 a couple months later so she might get a few clothing pieces then. I'm going to guess either the pj's or the caboodle is on backorder. But yeah never thought of the as 80's being historical. I was born in 81 and that's a real eye opener there 😳

    I'm a little younger than you and was in grade school/ middle school and approximately near the same age Courtney is portraying and I can guarantee you that those graphic ts were allll the rage for that age group. All my school photos have me dressed similar. My mom had several pairs of slouch boots- I was a tomboy and lived in Payless tennis shoes since I destroyed shoes so quickly! Most of her collection feels fairly familiar and I can look back at family photos and see these things.

    I was born in 1984. I was 2. Scrunchies , rocky Poley socks , bright colored frilled dresses. That was toddler me. Courtney is one lucky lady, most hair styles in the 80s shouldn't have come to pass but hers is good.

    I graduated in 1993 and I had black boots like those. Long ones and short ones.
    My daughter has hair like Courtney so my mom bought an AG for her when she was small with curly hair. HoT MeSs express. The rest of the AGs she had were all straight haired or kinda curled hair. That curly haired AG is the only one her and her friends never played with after her hair went wonky.

    I was 16 in1986! The majority of the collection reads as accurate to me... I did not have most of the trendy items, we weren't poor but we weren't allowed to buy in in the full price fashion items. I had scrunchies and the lip smacker lip balm as well as the caboodle! I bought my first American girl doll, Samantha, that year, with money from my savings account and received lots of her collection as birthday and holiday gifts. Because of the lack of hair playability I probably won't get Courtney. I have another doll who looks like me when I was 16, I will probably get items from Courtney's collection for her. I really want the acid washed denim items!!!

    Very cool/cute American Girl 1986 Courtney doll, love the 80's theme with the acid wash denim, bracelets, Reeboks, walkman and spiral perm. She looks amazing, that spiral perm can definitely get frizzy, my sister had a spiral perm for many years back then and the whole frizzy perm was really popular, lol 😂 it's weird that they consider 1986 as historical. I was born in 1979 so was a teenager in the 90's but still had Reeboks with fluro yellow/green laces, I sometimes get the early 90's mixed up with the 80's. My sister had the large elastic belts, frilly skirts and puffy crop tops and that frizzy fringe/bangs and large earrings that was happening then. She is a beautiful doll. 😍💗

    Well, with the popularity of video games and arcade games rising in the 80s, I think it would be fair to say that some kids, maybe, would be interested in designing a video game. Courtney's thing is that she loves video games too, and not a lot of girl characters were featured in video games back then. Maybe back then, they wouldn't call it "coding" but, wanting to design a video game doesn't seem totally out of place, does it? Obviously, coding is part of what you need to know how to do, to be able to design a video game, so, at least to me, it makes sense and seems historically accurate in the sense that I do believe some girls would want to design video games if they loved them as much as Courtney did. 🤷🏽‍♀️

    I was born early 80's and was tempted to get this. Because I remember almost everything when I see the trailers. I grew up in the midwest, and I was such a fan of mohawks, punk, and the rocker fashion that was on tv or that I saw while at the mall. I saw that t-shirt as a kid. And those shoes. I wore those leggings in 88ish. With a skirt over it. I remember the strap under the heels. Did the doll have that? I had a denim jacket in the 90's. It fit a liter soda in an inner pocket. Best jacket ever. I still have it.

    I think Courtney is cool but I feel like her outfit choices are a bit more like an older mall teen like Tiffany or Cyndi Lauper. In her story she seems nerdier. I wasn’t alive in the 80s but just from movies and Sears catalogs I feel like she’d be more likely wearing color blocked sweatshirts and floral jumpers.
