Being an atheist, this music is still incredibly beautiful. The beauty of religion is in things like this, pieces of music, in art, the beauty of it is all in the art. You can't help but to love the beauty. This is a marvelous piece of music, composed by an extraordinary composer. You don't have to be a believer to have respect for the art and music.

To be fair its a choral arrangement of Adagio for Strings set to the words of a Latin Mass so to many this particular work has a great deal to do with Catholicism. For me its a stunningly beautiful and haunting work with its religious interpretation or not.

Words cannot ever describe the feelings that music may portray and words may divide where music can bring us together, for music is the expression of the heart and the most inner emotions of humans, where we are all not too different in our longing for peace and peace of mind.

Very few of us can understand the words - this just goes to show that music is above words. Once while singing in a choir I had a 'Musical Experience" - I lost awareness of my physical being and rose up above the choir by about 10 meters. After a few moments, when my conscious 'monkey mind' noticed what was happening I was instantly back on the risers, singing as per usual. But for that moment I was 'one with the music'. absolutely magical.

I wish I could demonstrate to all listening to this most exquisitely haunting of melodies, and reading my words, the full measure of the transcendent bliss and the aethereal exhilaration Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei means to and for me.
I have an extraordinarily wide vocal range that enables me to sing all eight registers of the chorus. Whilst at university, a friend who then had been a piano performance major of considerable ability told me that I could sing from the fifth ledger line below the bass clef to the D above high C (and once an A)!
Yes, I even now can voice nearly all this grand piece; just the highest couple of notes.
Unfortunately, I lack the resources to train and to develop my talents (I also aspire to be a novelist) to marketable skills, that I could earn a worthwhile living; and conceivably, actual wealth, which could enable me to facilitate others in their own efforts to enhance their capacity.

+Kornelia McKenzie Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) is a choral composition in one movement by Samuel Barber, his own arrangement of his Adagio for Strings (1936). In 1967, he set the Latin words of the liturgical Agnus Dei, a part of the Mass, for mixed chorus with optional organ or piano accompaniment.

Whenever I listen to this it takes me away from all the bad things in this world. And for just 8 minutes it's peace and I don't have to worry about the awful things I hear on the news. When music can do that to you, I think it's just wonderful. But still my friends think Iggy Azalea is the best artist alive.

To all the people who say they like this even though they aren't religious, the music is not religious, just the text. Samuel Barber originally wrote this as an instrumental piece only, called Adagio for Strings. It wasn't until almost 30 years later that he made a choral arrangement of it with these words.

    • @alanhigh8125

It's all about context. The melody for the US national anthem was taken from an English drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven". Yet the melody is now only associated with the US anthem. The US also "borrowed" the melody from the British national anthem, "God Save the Queen", and applied it to "My Country tis of Thee". Elgar's "Nimrod" was adapted by John Cameron as "Lux Aeterna". So, when Barber, who wrote this melody, chose to use the Adagio in conjunction with "Agnus Dei", this version became "religious". I've heard it performed in Catholic Mass and in Lutheran services.
