Good talk, everyone should wear them as they feel comfortable with. It's a good start not to feel ashamed about our beliefs. If Catholics or Christians wear their crosses in public. Why shouldn't we do the same with our elekes?
Well in my traditiona they said people not suppose to see them and u put it out when u are in your shrine. It always protects me whether its inside or out
Yes sista! I wear mine with so much pride. They so protect that I have to give them the ultimate reflection and respect. Now mind you I am humble and very deserving in my new aquaintance with this new chapter in my life. But our heavenly does not introduce us to a new found if it ain't deserving and meant to be. Totally feel you and agree with what you said.. rocking mine outside my shirt!! Yes sista

ALAFIA!! I come from an era were you keep your practice to yourself. Lucumi comes from a yoruba word means secret friend. In other words no one need to know what is and how you are receiving protection. I have been involve in Santeria for 30 years, and I can tell you this need to show of your ellekes, is a new age deal.
Yeah they don't even wear elekes in Yorubaland like they. At most they will wear one but most wear none. Plus she is wearing trade beads. Those are the ones the caucasians traded with sellout Africans for captives(slaves). Oh plus Alafia is not an African word. It is arabic. But I guarantee you no one will acknowledge anything I just said. The sister doesn't realize it but is bringing western religious thinking into African culture. It corrupts and adds to the misunderstanding that is common among New Africans in particular.
@@MsAakifa I'm not sure what keeping secrets has to do with anything I said but this was an old post. I may not even recall. That killing witches narrative is not as common as you are implying. In fact muslims and christians turn up dead more often. And no that has nothing to do with why they don't really do that. It just isn't part of the culture. The whole eleke ceremony for instance is not something they do. That's something that was created in the diaspora. But another reason is as I said the history of the type of beads.
I’m still a newborn to this and I knew something was wrong because my sister is definitely initiate it and I never see my sister speak to other people go around people without her head covered and I never see her Elekes

Alafia Awo Ato Alafia, I agree with your commentary , however, if you live in New York in any of the five boroughs, I suggest that if you're Awo you should wear your elekes inside. Here's the reason why I say this. There are special police gang units and gang members are now wearing beads, not elekes, to symbolize their set. It's called CRAZE. So not to be associated with that type of activity, I choose to wear my elekes inside. Just a point of information. Alafia Awo Ato EL-Sun Amen Ra Omo Ogun
Elsun White your 100% rite cuz i wear elegua (black&red) n sum guy looked at me like if i was in a blood gang..ur rite about this...i wear my beads inside my shirt n dont let nobody touch them at all.
yeah that happened to me when i was visiting NYC 2 years ago and i was wearing my collar de Eleggua outside my shirt and 2 people asked me about gang activity because they saw me wearing them lol. after that for remainder of my trip i wore them inside my shirt. down here in Miami that doesn't happen.
Greetings all, i actually loved the video and agree thats its a personal decision, i received mine about 12 years ago and i used to wear them everyday for about five years then i stopped. i wore my beads mostly on the inside because i didnt want them to snag on anything and break. That is the only reason i wore them like that. i feel like alot of us newbies from america wear these beads/elekes (the ones that come from receiving warriors are not a practice of traditional ifa)maybe because we are proud to have them and be connected to the traditions of our ancestors, so we wear them very proudly, and as for doing it for the reason i see in the comments for hiding our practice that just never occurred to me. i dont practice Lukami so i never learned the secret friend slogan, but those already in Yoruba do not need that re connection to culture as we from the Americas did. so receiving the elekes for us is like a really big thing so we wear them proudly, we feel really good about it, and i dont think the Nigerians understand that, because they never experienced that disconnection from the tradition and the ceromony of recieving our warriors/elekes was our first run in with Orisha life or IFA, before we never heard of it and if we had it was foreign to us so we wear them out and proud at first. The Babalowo who gave them to me never told me to hide them in my shirt in FEAR of being found out, persecuted or anything like that. i learned about the difference of traditional IFA and Santeria, Lukami later so for me now wearing my elekes now again on the inside is to protect them as they protect me ... period i learned alot on this comment feed so thank you all ....
The truth of the authenticity you bring with your Elekes, will always be manifest in your aura. You can never completely hide who you are, to everyone.
I was just talking to my father about this... He says they should be worn in, I say it's how you want. They are powerful, I tuck them away when it suits me, but mostly out...Peace!
i think it depends on who & how they are being worn.. if someone is strutting around with them as a fashion statement and they carry themselves as thugs with they pants saggin while wearing the beads.. Then yeah they would be mistaken for gang members. But if they on the path of righteousness then they will carry themselves and portray themselves as such for instance have the appropriate attire (whites)
I am a white man and practice Santeria I only looked up the idea of keeping them inside or out for the simple reason that they may pick up unwanted energies of other negative people around me with places I usually go. I am glad you cleared that up it makes perfect sense. I liked and subscribed to your channel.🙏🙇🙌
I always wondered if I was supposed to wear them inside or out as well as certain times others say that they shouldn’t be worn. I love to wear mines everyday. Like you said the make me feel protected and keep my energy balanced, but I have noticed that when i work at my 9-5 and wear them under my shirt I still get questions about them.
I 1000% appreciate you posting this! I love to wear my elekes for everyone to see! I know that it makes people uncomfortable, but it has taken me so long to get them I refuse to NOT wear them. Thanks beautiful queen! Ache!!
Yes! I wear them as a choker. I don't know. Something tells me to wear them as such. The only ones who make a big deal of it are old men. Not even older women complain over them. Thank you I needed this video. I was stopped by a Senados' employee over wearing my Elekes outside and around my neck (in choker form). He was frustrated and angry. Lets just say I went home and smoked those beads with sage to cleanse them of the energy they picked up. To me, it makes more sense to wear them outside to absorb negativity. Next time that guy bothers me, I'll tell him my Babas told me it is ok and if he persists on I'll go "Elegua told me so." We're suppose to support each other not egging this ugly distribute. Again, thank you so much for this video.
You are so 100% rite about what your saying, either way it will help u,protect u no matter what,i do wear mines inside n once in a while i wear it outside of my shirt but most of the time i like to keep mines inside like im very over protected with my beads n keep them safe inside my shirt..i treats my beads like if they are my kids:) i take very good care of my beads well😊🙂🙏🏼
This is a very interesting perspective. I was encouraged to wear mine outside because the notion was if you wore them inside, then it was an indication that you were ashamed to wear them freely. I didn't even know that it was customary to wear them inside, but nevertheless, I share your philosophy so thank you for this.
I received mine a few weeks ago in NYC..I wore them out, until I had to board a plane so no one would touch them. I do love to wear them out, but at times due to certain activities, I do wear them in. I'm comfortable either way.

Great video. I choose to wear mine inside most of the time, because people watch me and are constantly casting black magick on me. I don’t want them to know I am one step ahead of them. However, I would keep an Ochún (my crown Orisha) bracelet on my left hand so people who are familiar with the religion can view me as their sister and feel a sense of community with me, and people who don’t know what it is, thinks that it is just a fun beaded bracelet.
