my first exposure to a tin whistle was from a Folk Metal band from Switzerland called Eluveitie
They're really good. Especially when they had Anna Murphy, damn that woman had a voice!!!
The American early-jazz clarinetist Billy Novick plays Americana on whistle for Ken Burn's historical documentaries on PBS; he also recorded (with guitar wizard Guy van Duser) two whistle albums, the first called The New Pennywhistle Album, which is mostly trad, and bit of jazz and Pennywhistles from Heaven, which is mostly jazz and a bit of trad. Billy studied with Cathal McConnel and is considered the Charlie Parker of the tinwhistle. (This is a superb channel, Stephanie! I've taught a number of people but you're teaching 30,000! You GO!)
Thanks very informative. Began listening to Kwela music when I was young. Has the perfect blend of upbeat jazz. Spokes Mashiyane was a master of Kwela if you want to delve into the African offbeat.
Great Stephanie! Those bloopers always make me watch to the end!!
Thanks for adding the bloopers!
Congrats on the 30,000 subscribers.... you're getting there :)
Thanks for the history lesson on the tin whistle Stephanie.
“Concerning Hobbits” is what drew me to the whistle as well, plus your channel ;-)
Bloopers are so funny 😂
You’re awesome! Thank you for everything that you do
Stephanie, a real pleasure to hear your ever-improving skills on this instrument. You have gone beyond playing songs to making music! Nice work! Thank you for this informative video.
Aho Stephanie, Yes the fipple style flute. It supposedly is the third oldest musical instrument in the world. Only the drum and the rattle being older. There is a Native American legend that tells of the first flute being a cedar branch that had been hollowed out by worms. The finger holes were made by a woodpecker drilling for the worms. There are two accounts of the story. In one version the branch (flute) was discovered by a little boy who became lost while out picking berries. He used the flute to make a sound so he could be found. In the other version the branch (flute) was discovered by a young man suffering from a broken heart because his girlfriend whom he was planning on marrying told him that she was marrying another. In both accounts the discoverer of the branch had a dream where the woodpecker flew down and landed on the branch and sat down over two of the holes. The wind blew and ruffled the woodpecker's feathers and the branch made a sound. When awakening from the dream he knew to tie a wooden block over the two holes and when this was done he was able to blow into the branch and cause the branch to have a voice. To this day this is why the fetish, or totem of the Native America flute is also called, the bird.
Stephanie, it's been quite some time since I suggested you do a video about the origin of the whistle. I'm glad you finally got around to it. Thankyou. Toksa Akhe Mitakuye.
Thank you for the legends. The world needs legends.
@@mcwuff3456 Aho MC Wuff, I agree, the world needs stories and legends. If you like a good story, check out Joseph M. Marshall The Lakota Way stories and lessons for living. Seven of the stories from the book were made into a CD with the same title. You can find these seven stories posted on CZcams. On the story of the Eagle is an introduction where the author tells about himself and the book. The story of the flute maker tells of the young man with the broken heart who finds the first flute. My favorite though is the story of No Moccasins. If you like these stories, the book has many more. I believe my wife got my copy from Barnes and Noble.
Toksa Akhe Mitakuye.
Great video! Very informative and well-researched.
Great video Stephanie - thank you.
I highly recommend Phil Hardys low whistle albums, he's the dude from Kerry Whistles, also has lessons on You Tube, seems like a pretty chill dude
Beautiful work. very useful information, Thank you.
I love the flipple flutes but the Armenian Duduk is the most magical flute in the world to me.
Thanks s for the all great videos. If don't now there is a type of jazzy music form south Africa called Kwela the main instrument is the tin whistle played in a very jazzy whey.
Saw a video once of James Galway playing the whistle . Outstanding !
You can add the backing track of the Indian man walking up the trail in the new movie Chloe’s Mountain. I did that track on a low G for the movie.
Two German bands use it as well: Faun and D'artagnan. LOVE them both!
This was fascinating!! I first heard the whistle prominently in Joanie Madden Song of the Irish Whistle, so great! Just picked it up a couple weeks ago and you have been my go to CZcams professor, so a big fat thank you!!😁☺️👏✌️
Oh yeah…Joanie is a force of nature. Met her in Massachusetts a decade ago and was inspired to become a bad player myself. ✌️🍺🎩🎩🎩
Awesome!
¡Eres increible! Tocaba el tin whistle cuando era adolescente y gracias a tus videos lo he vuelto a hacer. No entenderás lo que te estoy escribiendo pero te doy las gracias por tu esfuerzo. Un cordial saludo
Fantastic
I recently decided to learn the Tin Whistle. Thank you for this. You're officially my instructor from here on out lol
My first exposure was actually Lord of the Dance!
I've got one and I'm so happy I love this music, as a child I was drawn to the music but I never knew the instrument that made it. It's so beautiful ❤️...
Dunmore Lassies as background music, lovely !
wow Bone Flutes, that's awesome.
Cool...
would be awesome to see you doing tutorial for eluveitie LGVS & thousandfold
and also anime fairy tale theme song. Loved all your videos.
Interesting video idea: Penny whistle brands famous players use. Just a though.
Oh wow, there are so many!
Stephanieeee ❤❤
Hi, rookie whistler here. Apologies if this is out of form, but do you take requests?
You mentioned video games. There is one video game with arguably the most iconic use of a low whistle in gaming history.
I first heard it 20 years ago, and I've been in love with that instrument ever since.
Metal Gear Solid - The Best Is Yet To Come - as sung by Aoife Ní Fhearraigh.
I've spent years trying to find the tabs for that song.
You would be making this old man's dream come true by performing a cover/tutorial for it.
Again, just a humble request.
Thank you for all your helpful videos.
You forgot to mention Eluveitie. They're a celtic metal band with two whistle players.
And Omnia and Faun and all the other bands that use tin whistle...There are hundreds worldwide, but this was a brief history 😉 unfortunately I couldn't fit everyone in.
@@CutiepieTinWhistle yeah. Great video tho!
Double whistle players also
Apparently, South African Township music is also a hotbed of tin whistling! If I remember right, my first tin whistle experience was on Paul Simon's Graceland! I think it was "You can call me Al". I so wanted to play like that!!
Video #04: watched!
Thank you, Stephanie for this video it is very, very, interesting and you have made it awesome.
You have forgotten one of the awesome whistle players: Stephanie. You are the best for us.
What is with the low whistles?
Thank you, greetings from the heart from germany
Aww, thank you so much :) I'm not sure abut low whistles. I'll look into it! :)
I love it in Folk metal in bands such as Eluveitie
Really good to know. Didn't know that jazz style play out there. You may be able to find many similar instruments in Asian culture, and oftentimes I feel that tin whistle sound itself is also well matched with Asian traditional songs and tunes. Thanks for all the information again!
안성일 Hey! :) Nice to find you here, lol 😄
@@rangedacademy3982 Yay! lol
Yes, I agree. I'm sure plenty of the traditional Asian music would sound lovely on tin whistle 😊
@@CutiepieTinWhistle And Erik the Flutemaker makes them in oriental keys as well! :)
I can't wait to learn hedwig's theme from Harry Potter, I know you already did the tutorial on it, I also want to learn Orphans Lullaby By Wilykit from 2011 Thundercats, please tell me I'm not the only one that wants to learn it.
When it comes to mentioning tin whistle players, the wonderful Pol Brennan of Clannad should be mentioned.
Oh there are certainly plenty more who could be mentioned too 😊 maybe in a less 'brief' history video 😁
Flutes and drums are the oldest instruments and essentially began as water reeds with holes in them and slanted rocks banged against other specifically slanted rocks.
wow I'm not the only Ryan to play the Tin Whistle.
Nicely done.
So, now I’m wondering how am I going to stretch my “Brief History of the Tin Whistle” to half an hour on Monday?
Granted, I am interspersing tunes played on the various whistles in my collection, but I’m worried!
👏👍 As the penny whistle was generally considered a toy, it has been suggested that children or street musicians were paid a penny by those who heard them playing the whistle. However, in reality, the instrument was so called because it could be purchased for a penny. The name "tin-whistle" was also coined as early as 1825 but neither the tin whistle nor the penny whistle name seems to have been common until the 20th century. The instrument became popular in several musical traditions, namely: English, Scottish, Irish and American traditional music. Due to its affordability, the tin whistle was a popular household instrument, as ubiquitous as the harmonica. In the second half of the 19th century, some flute manufacturers such as Barnett Samuel and Joseph Wallis also sold whistles.

I would give this video 2 thumbs up If I could for adding Tommy makem The bard of Armagh to the mix. Listening to tommy makem and the Clancy Brothers is what inspired me to learn to play
Excellent work. Can I make a correction. Tommy Makem’s surname’ is pronounced “May Kem” Thanks for respecting the Irish. 👏 Another great Irish expert on the tin whistle ‘ is Vinnie Kilduff. At the time of writing ‘ he is regarded as Ireland’s leading male exponent on the instrument. Maybe he might get a mention ‘ in a future video.? Keep the videos coming.
There are so many "cheap" tin whictles with a plastic mouthpiece thrown on a cheap matal tube. I wish someone would do that for a low whistle range so I can finally afford one. I'd be interested to know that history of the low whistle as well.
The best cheap low D available at the moment is the James Dominic low whistle:

Hey! Oh how I love your channel. I have recently taken up the tin whistle and am finding all your tutorials and tabs for it extremely helpful. That said, I am desperate to find the Tin Whistle tabs for another song from World of Warcraft called the daughter of the sea. It is Jania's warbringers song. I have scoured the internet without any luck. I am hopeful you can develop the tabs and post them? A beautiful song so I hope you can help :D
Thank you! Send me a link to a version of the tune on CZcams and I'll check it out 😊

thank you! 😊
Stephanie, you completely missed out the Kwela genre that originated in the 1950's in South Africa. The penny whistle was not just used significantly, it was a defining element of the music.
A truly unique style, and extremely influential in the Southern African Music.

Once again, thank you for your videos and enthusiasm.
I intend to buy a whistle from Tony Dixon.
Do you know if the TRAD (aluminum or brass) models are good or should i aim for the DX006 (aluminum) or DX204 (brass)? Are they any good for reaching second and third octaves? I know that the DX005 is because of your video.
I appreciate it!
Unfortunately I've never tried the other Dixon whistles so I wouldn't know. Sorry. You might find others reviewing them online somewhere though 😊
@@CutiepieTinWhistle Ok. Thank you for answering anyway. Have a good day!
A fipple! An apt name indeed, and maybe a clever, though not absolutely accurate, answer to someone who asks what I'm playing, as happened recently?
Thanks for this insightful brief history, and in return how about these 2 evocative adorable samples found on YT? An Irish whistle tune, and Scottish whistle/Gaelic vocal: Valsen - Claire Mann /Aaron Jones Secret Orders
and Julie Fowlis - Fionnlagh Ag Innereach Set - flv
I'll check them out :)
I stand corrected. Claire Mann is N.E England , and Aaron Jones, South Coast of England, I thought their music was Irish Folk, but maybe that's because Aaron Jones was influenced to be into the folk music by an Irish family. Such a vast store of musicians and bands. Fascinating!
Would one need to no some one that created the penie whistle tablet , that showed the bluse tune called the jellied roll blues the wind wood music store here in Montana dosent carie Clark whistle or tabulatures
Ever consider trying to establish a tour of a tin whistle factory?
I hadn't, but how cool would that be?! :)
It would be very cool. 🤣
Is there a whistle one can buy on Amazon you'd suggest to an absolute beginner?
Here are my beginner's recommendations: czcams.com/video/9CXpoO_H60A/video.html

@@CutiepieTinWhistle After watching your this vide and a few more I ordered a Sweet Tone. I can't believe I'm gonna take up ANOTHER hobby. LOL.
By the way I loved your video of the low whistle with the Native American inspired song. I want to be able to do that! :)
@@tunisiancrochetchannel it's a lot of fun, and easy if you just take your time and focus on enjoying it! I'm sure you'll have a great time! x
Irish music and Tin Whistle have really spread throughout the world. You will find it curious, for example, that in the song "El Aguante" (the resistance) of the Puerto Rican band "Calle 13" they used tin whistle and other elements related to the music of your lands. Here I leave the link of the video in case you like to see it: czcams.com/video/LUk73pUe9i4/video.html

Good video as always!
Among the truly great - and heralded- tin whistle players is Joanie Madden. Joanie put out two albums of whistle performances: The Song of the Irish Whistle and it's followup The Song of the Irish Whistle, vol. 2. These are both very influential albums among tin whistle players.
Here's a link to a live performance of Far From Home by Joanie with Cherish the Ladies.

Yes, she's mentioned briefly in the video though not with pictures and music unfortunately. I hadn't planned to add all that in otherwise I'd have featured her now heavily 🤣 thanks for adding this 😊
@@CutiepieTinWhistle I saw her name flash by. There was a lot in your video.
I've met Joanie and the group a few times after concerts and festivals. She's a real hoot. Notice how she gives signal with her foot to Mary and Mirella! LOL!
That's not true according to my research -- not paid a penny for playing; it was so-called because it cost a penny to buy one, and hence the name "penny whistle"
celtic women???
Great imagination! But your 'penny whistle' is nonsense. The name originated from a TW which was a penny, a children's toy.
