Lamictal

  • Also known as Lamotrigine, Lamictal improves a type of epilepsy referred to as partial seizures. Lamictal also increases the interval between depressive or manic episodes in Bipolar Disorder but fails to improve attacks of either depression or mania.
Lamictal causes a skin rash in 5-10% of those receiving the drug. Peak prevalence of the rash occurs in children, those simultaneously treated with valproate and with rapid dose escalation. Uncommonly this eruption may become life-threatening as toxic epidermal necrolysis or the Stevens Johnson syndrome.
Dosage of Lamictal varies from 100 mg to 400 mg depending on other current medicines. Without other therapy the target dose is 200 mg each day but requires gradually increasing to this amount over 6 weeks.
A moderate side effect profile exists, although Lamictal may be safer than other anti-convulsants. Extensive off-label prescriptions are written for cluster headache, peripheral neuropathy and migraine prevention. Inexpensive generics are available.

Lamotrigine has helped get rid of the severity of my depressive symptoms. I only suffer with severe depression not bi-polar. It has stopped me crying a lot. I used to cry a lot almost for no reason or out of proportion. I haven’t had any side effects at all with it and now have been able to reduce the venlafaxine down to the lowest minimal dose . This is the best explanation I've seen! Thank you. I have been trying to figure out Why Lamotrigine works for me. It's interesting that the medical consensus is that they don't really know why it helps (anything other than seizures) either. I have been diagnosed with Bipolar III, PTSD, and severe depression. I don't understand why this works better than the SSNRI I was on for years, with even less side effects. Even though it is apparent and known that it doesn't effect serotonin or dopamine levels, my depression is so much less severe. I hope more research goes into it.

Useful breakdown on Lamictal, ty. I'm wondering what the long-term possibilities of the drug are for BP?
Like, if you take 150mg for say 5 years then slowly taper off it- does it have lasting benefit or are you likely to be "the same" if not worse off than before? It does seem like a potentially good drug for my needs (esp bc of some of my physical factors: low melanin, on Testosterone supplements,... ) but also I am a young adult and wonder if starting it now would be a 'life sentence' that would lead to poorer quality of life in the distant future. I know there's not a lot of research towards this question per say, but it would be useful to get some professional input.

I was recently prescribed lamictal for depression and anxiety after trying many different medications with poor luck. My main issue are these uncomfortable sensations that I have in my body that go hand in hand with the anxiety I have. Has anyone experienced this and have had success with lamictal helping this?

@@im_saved_by_grace Thats such a tough call, how awful to be on a medication that is working well and your symptoms are being managed effectively, only to have that taken away from you. Most of these meds have long term consequences, including antidepressants that are prescribed super frequently. If anyone who is being kept alive because of their medication, meaning it is giving them a good quality of life, I think they'd be willing to take the chance of the long term side effects. They all have harmful side effects long term. I had to change Doctors because one of them would not prescribe a tricyclic to me, so I found someone else who would. I am taking Lamictal for my BPD and when I moved up to 150mg I noticed differences, but with everything going on in my life, I assumed it was stress. Then when I was bumped up to 200mg, the side effects went into overdrive- double/blurred vision, headaches, nausea, stomach pains, vaginal burning/swelling, etc.
Since I was near passing out on a daily basis, I had to suddenly stop(this was at the advice from my pharmacist, because with COVID, it impossible to get ahold of any of my doctors or a lot of them quit/transferred). Most of the negative side effects seem to be leaving, however, I still have the vaginal issues along with stomach issues.
My PCP is recommending to go to 100mg(even though I have been off the med for 1 wk) and then taper down, but idk what to do, as I worry about SJS and such. This medication should not exist in my opinion.
