I saw an interview once where Jerry said that Layne always encouraged him to sing more. He gave Jerry the encouragement to be out there more. Their harmonies are one of the things I loved about Alice In Chains.

Something that will make you appreciate Jerry even more is the story that towards the end of Laynes life when he was having trouble preforming on stage, Jerry would regularly sing ALL of the vocals, even those that most others could not, while Layne would chime in from time to time. The sound those two could produce will never be matched.

Chris Edwards not really true. Jerry has always been singing back up or harmonizing with Layne. Just watch the Rio concert in 93. Older albums he was singing mostly back up but by Dirt and Jar of Flies he was singing lead in some songs. Layne himself was the one who kept telling Jerry to "sing more" because he obviously could hear it. Jerry at the time wasn't comfortable and didn't really see himself as a singer. It wasn't until Sap and Boggy Depot where he really came on to his own as a singer.

I think I read Jerry used a sustain pedal, or something to let the string continue to sound uninterrupted for that whole 16 bar section starting at 3:26, and when you listen closely the Jerry repeats the same melodic figure of those two ongoing notes and the rhythm placement of the riff is constant, not quite what one would play if one was just plain or imaginative with playing.
Listen , that long note goes on for 3 bars then last bar he skips up a note, and holds that until the last half of the 4th beat ending with those 2 quick notes close together, then he starts over again .
forgive my clumsiness at trying to describe the ingenious technique and rhythm scheme of Jerry's solo there but it is simply beautiful. So simply done yet loaded with creativity. in my humble opinion.

The fact that this song is mostly Jerry singing with Lane in the background, and the video showing Jerry the most and Lane the least of all the band members is foreshadowing. As if Lane with his amazing voice and charisma, was fading into the ether. So Sad. And what an amazing song.

Cool theory. The song was written by Jerry Cantrell after be broke up with his girlfriend of 7 years. Jerry sings main on this because its his song and a deeply personal one. Jerry Cantrell said of the song:
"Another attempt to reconcile the fact that my life and paths are tearing me apart from the person I love. All the things I write about her are a way for me to maybe speak to her, express things I could never express."
Just to show how brilliant Jerry's lyrics are. It can be interpreted in loads of ways.

Raven Darkmoon I don't know sometimes I just pick up on things that I've been listening to for a while. I was like "Oh no shit... that's actually what they say."
Like Black Hole Sun, I just understood about the black hole in the sun... I don't know, I was like "Oh I get it now..." now where's my dunce cap haha

Man, AIC had some underrated tight harmonies, Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell were a match made in heaven...or hell 😅

Grateful I grew up in the 90s. That era did fine without social media. That was worth the wait.

Pretty cool. FM hardly plays real music. I love 90s music.

Bought this CD in 96 and it stills kicks ass. Going on 62 and am still inspired as much if not more.

Such a shame these guys weren't included in the rock and roll hall of fame. The jury must be deaf. This tune is timeless
