Nico: blue shell is pretty useless
Also Nico when playing the game without pressing left: here’s why we want the blue shell
It's useful then but in a normal playthrough it's only useful for a few star coins
@@anthonyrodriguez3688 and its useful to make the game more fun / challenging
@@Strashky Yeah but that doesn’t really help you
@@azimmeme9994 If you are good with it it is the most useful powerup in the game imo since you are basically invinsible when you are in the shell. I think its usefullness scales really well with a persons skill level. Because if you are bad at using it might even be considered a powerdown.
@@Strashky Except for falling, getting squished, boss attacks. I think it is fun, but i do not hink it makes the game easier
Hmph, sounds like you never mastered the arts of Shell Mario. It was super useful
Guess nico just sucks at the game.
it made Mario look like a Ninja Turtle but behave like Sonic
Yes this is so true
I loved the shell, I wanted it to come back
Harumph, harumph.
I actually thought it was pretty good, I like using the shell.
I do disagree concerning the blue shell powerup as the control isn’t actually that hard, if you start deviating from the path you wanna take in shell form you can let go of the movement buttons for a sec and you can go back to walking, it was in fact my 2nd favorite powerup from nsmb after the gigantic mushroom
Yeah, and he also said that after you start running you automatically go into shell mode, which isn't true, since you have do press down after running to go into shell mode.
@@floofybull my experience is that it happens automatically. however it was a great idea and pretty fun to use. ESPECIALLY if you want to go fast, thus its used all the time in speedruns. I dont get why he mentioned his will to go through a level as fast as he could as a reason why this is a bad item. its actually the other way around
yeah, if you have problems controlling the blue shell that seems more like a skill issue
Yeah I remember alway going to toad houses just to get a blue shell
Me too.
The Blue Shell was a good item. Speed runners love that item. It's really useful to plow through enemies and it allows Mario and Luigi to swim faster. It's an earlier version of the Penguin Suit but without Ice Balls but not reliant on Ice or downward slopes to gain speed.
True
yep it's best of the game x)
Yeah I don’t get why it’s on this list. Sure it can be hard to control, but the shell slide is fast, beats enemies, breaks blocks, and if I’m not mistaken protects you from most damage. Plus the extra swimming is nice and iirc you can block some attacks by simply crouching. Few power ups are that versatile
The blue shell is difficult to control and it’s killed me many times.
When will they bring it back? I love the blue shell.
@@christianfrost8660 what did he say?
Blue Yoshi can fly when he has any color shell in his mouth so he was a pretty useful reward for beating that bonus stage actually.
And any Yoshi can fly if they have a blue shell in their mouth.
@@lyokogirl4562 blue koopa shells aren’t that easy to find so it’s useful
@@lyokogirl4562 But blue Yoshi can fly no matter what color shell he eats, & blue shells don't exist in every level.
Also, you skip levels with the wings, I don't know what Nico was talking about there...
@@VictorSperry 2:36 This is probably where I disagree with Nico entirely.
Blue Yoshi can eat any koopa and literally grow wings until the Shell despawns, giving you basically an infinite flight. This is basically how I cheesed the Special World levels, like Tubular. combine with Cape feathers, you can glide and beat some of the tricky levels with ease.
"Im obviously talking about the blue shell"
Speedruners:Im gonna end this man whole career
The Blue Shell makes you practically invincible save for a few insta death traps while zooming around inside it,which more than makes up for it being hard to control. The Red Star, while not the best, can let you fly to planets from the Observatory. The Builder Suit as mentioned can let you break otherwise unbreakable blocks
The only problem I have with the red star is how little it’s used which is absolutely criminal for two reasons. One for how well it controls compared to the wing cap and two how much the red star theme slaps again compared to the wing cap
Fr this list is kinda shit
Red star should have been used more
@@ohsheet9240 It should have been in Galaxy 2 instead of the Spring Mushroom. That power up didn’t need to exist.
Nathaniel Bandy called The Red Star "A waste of a power up". Only used in the level you get it, and the hub world.
But the controls were amazing! He forgets stuff like this!
But I like the look
@@roaringthunder115 Same. Mario in black and red.
I hope it f theres a super Mario galaxy 3 they'll bring the red star power up back
@@calebdonaldson8770 literally both NB and Nico forgot about the controls
The wings are actually a faster way to get blue Yoshi, who can fly using any colour shell!
Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Yes, I think its one of funniest power ups.
Yeah that's actually pretty useful
he didn't mention that however lose yoshi lose flight
Blue Yoshi is sooo useful. Definitely disagree with that choice.
The BlueShell in NSMDS is OP when you master it
It's not the red star's fault it was underutilized. It doesn't deserve to be on this list. It is not a bad power up. It is a great power up that was squandered.
i think it only appears in the one level and hub world because it would probably just make every star a bit too easy (i could probably give boss fights and water levels an exception)
Yes they could've at least make a secret galaxy to use it
@@randomhuman5714 first of all I think that’s the whole reason the red star was given a time limit. Second and more importantly there’s a simple fix to that just make one galaxy dedicated to using the red star in creative and original ways. Similar to sea slide galaxy where you had to swim around the ring in different challenges
Yes
I love red star
@@randomhuman5714 whilst i do agree here, it would've certainly been used better in some post-game missions like the purple comet. a lot of purple coin missions in smg1 felt uninspired, and having flythroughs similar to gateway have plenty of potential
There are not many power ups that let you break hard blocks. Only ones i can think of right now are link power up and builder mario power up.
The spiky helmet
The mega mushroom

• Spiny Shell
• Big Mushroom
• Super Hammer
• Master Sword

@@Shackwe I forgot about that, I'll test it in Super Mario Maker 2.
Update: It doesn't break Hard Blocks. While testing, I realised I was wrong about the Red POW Box breaking Hard Blocks so I've removed it from the list.
I hated spring Mario levels with a passion, to the point where I would purposely lose the power by getting hit to not have to use it, then get it when I have to
I exploited the game so that I never had to use it. (Didn’t always work though.)
Picture the Super Bowl flower on steroids plus motion controls?
I always liked that power up. But i alway took it off sooner than later.
You can be luigi and use a backflip if you have him
@@DiagonalTanooki I’ve 100% both sides of the first game
I disagree with Blue Shell, Red Star and Builder Mario but every other power-up on this list sucked
Also just the fact that Neo changed his mind about the P balloon just because of an upgrade if God in super Mario maker too it’s just stupid. And I don’t see how he doesn’t like Mario’s power flower because of how beautifully it controls and can be used to get past expenses of levels with ease which he even did himself when he showed that he can use Mario’s power flower ability to skip over Bowser in the dark world entirely and get straight to the Bowser battle
He only put the red star on the list because it was used in only 2 levels (including the hub world) but I thought in controlled a lot better that the wing cap
Sqme😊
Same
bro the blue shell is awesome. i used to go full on tasmo with it all the time when i had that game
Joy con drift isn’t the worst part imagine if you had to control spring Mario with motion controls?
Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee3eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I currently have Pro Controller drift :(
Rəəəəə
With a n64 controller!!!!!
That would be a nightmare
Somehow, I disagree with this list more than the old one
I actually like the Yoshi wings and Blue Yoshi: he will fly with any Koopa shell in his mouth. (Great for avoiding coins and beating Tubular.)
The blue shell was sick imo
I'm watching my first Nicobbq video WITH my new Nicobbq plush by my side. So worth the wait, thanks Nico!
6:45
So you hate the powerup, but you want it in more levels?
I’ve got to the point where I’m used to the controls on the spring mushroom because I replayed Galaxy many times
Same lol. Once you get the hang of it it's actually kinda fun imo
The sprig mushroom skucks sorry to say that but bee Mario is better yes he is ok cool and bad lol 😀😎
@@petertraggorth4755 average spring mushroom fan 😡 vs average bee mushroom enjoyer 😎
And I’ve got a point where I replayed super Mario galaxy so many times that I don’t even need to use spring mushroom most of the time which is great because it sucks
IKR! It's not nearly as hard as these noobs are making it out to be! I got used to it by my 2nd playthrough.
Something I do want to say is just because a power up is barely used, that doesnt mean its a bad power up, just that its a shame it wasn't used more. For example, the red star: its a fine power up that would have been great of used better like the wing cap from SM64.
Side tangent: the blue shell is a masterpiece
Hey Nico, you should also redo the Top 10 Mario Power-Ups.
The red star could’ve had so much potential. It’s sad you can only use it in one level and the main HUD to get to places faster.
This is supposed to be an improvement from last version, yet the Red Star's and Super Hammer's existence on this list makes me scratch my head. Also, the consistent hate on Spring Mushroom is astounding to me. Where's the Ice Skate, or the completely lazy Propeller Box (just ripoff Propeller Mushroom, the 3D titles could've just used it). Some of these make sense, others are just....why?
I like the ice scate.
What about the blue shell and Mario’s power flower? I don’t think those deserve to be on this list
@@rafedewar4701 So do I even know you can’t stop with it on not only does it give you much better controls on ice and kill certain enemies by running into them but it also allows you to ride over spikes
And instead of the propeller box I would’ve put the propeller block because at least the propeller box grants Mario an extra hit

I actually disagree with most of this list. The blue shell, yoshi wings, red star (even though is underused), super hammer and spin drill are all good powerups.
Also the power flower can be used to literally skip the whole bowser in the dark world stage, so how is it useless?
Plus how is the frog suit not on here?
The Power Flower is only useless with Yoshi.
@@slimballs9650 yeah Mario puffs up like a balloon, Luigi turns invisible, Wario turns metal and Yoshi… Breathes fire.
The super drill was underused but it's actually a lot of fun, Spin Dig Galaxy was one of my favorite levels in SMG2.
Not to mention the fact that it made for some great and original puzzles not to mention an interesting and fun Bossfight
Boo Mario was also underutilized in both games.
i dont think it should be called a powerup, its more like a gimmicky concept with some ok puzzles. i think it was only good in cosmic cove, otherwise it was mediocre at best. i dont think it belongs on this list tho
I love the Blue Shell in New Super Mario Bros.. What I like about the Blue Shell is that it is not a crutch. Most Mario power-ups are crutches that make the game easier to play. In contrast, while the Blue Shell does grant the player greater power, that power is difficult to properly use and thus the Blue Shell still keeps the game challenging. The extra power is the capability to beat levels faster and to beat enemies that are normally unbeatable or would take more time to beat. But that extra power comes with extra challenge.
As I already hinted at, the Blue Shell is pretty good, but only if you have the skill to use it properly. If you do not have enough skill for that then the Blue Shell is a really bad power-up which mostly gets in the way. Generally, the Blue Shell is as useful as the player using it is good.
Also, the Blue Shell significantly increases swimming speed.
I agree. When I played it I became a master at an instant.
Considering how good Blue Yoshi is, I disagree with Yoshi Wings being in this list. Easy Blue Yoshi
Because every shall you find with a blue Yoshi is basically a free lakitu cloud
@@IconicEnemyor every blue shell regardless of yoshi color. With that perspective, yea I can understand a little better now.
Yeah and that’s coming from the guy who’s never experienced blue shell flight or Yoshi wings for himself
@@IconicEnemy what are you on about? I've played Mario world. Pretty sure everyone has
The Power Hammer is one of the best power-ups. It can kill Thwomps, Boos, Peepas and u can create really tricky courses for it in MM2. I can clearly remember, when Carl struggled with a PH puzzle stage, but he said it was a really good level.
The super flower only inflates Mario; It gives Luigi invisibility, turns Wario into metal and let's Yoshi spit fire like a dragon
Here's the deal with the red star: It's a GREAT power up. Imo it controls the best out of any flying power ups and gains you great abilities. The problem is that it is SUCH a waste of an awesome power up, since it is only used in the Hub of smg1 and the ONE bonus level. If it were used more in actual levels it would be so much better of a power up!
i didnt know that gateway was a bonus level lol
no gateway's the first level of the game and one of the better ones too
The red star isn't that bad...the only problem its used in one level and that's it
Two if you count the hub world.
Like many of the other comments, I have to say that the Yoshi wings are really good, since blue Yoshi is incredibly useful. Also, I found the blue shell to be fun to play around with in NSMB, even if it was a bit unwieldy. And, the Superball power up from Super Mario Land is interesting and really neat to me.
It's actually possible to avoid using the Spring Mushroom completely if you want. For specifics, Mayro did entire runs of Galaxy 1 and 2 without transformations, and they were really interesting and engaging.
The Red Star is one of my all time fave Mario power ups. You can use it in the hub. It does have potential. I'm surprised the Mini Mushroom didn't make this list.
I theorized that the mini mushroom didn’t get on this list for two reasons. It was either one he was biased towards the mini mushroom because of all his stupid challenge videos. Or because Of something I realized just never wanted to do, the mini mushroom can be pretty useful for you just have to get used to the physics
OKAY ok
Okay okay okay okay okay okay okay okay okay okay okay
You know it’s always a good day when Nico uploads!
Indeed
true
This may not be the best vid tho. He called not one but two good power ups bad!
@@mrug123 bruh, like the shell was op in the original
I disagree with the red star power up as you can use it in the observatory and makes getting to the garden and engine room much easier. It also allows you to get 2 extra 1-ups in the observatory.
I use to play levels with the blue shell just to see how many were beatable. It was honestly some of the most fun i had in that game!
The Red Star was SUCH a missed opportunity. As far as I remember, it controlled pretty smoothly and I also just think flying is SO cool. 121 stars is a lot as is, but they could have really pushed the limits with this power-up. :/ Really a shame.
The blue shell is actually useful and it can really help in certain situations.
10:03, Mario's Power Flower to be exact. If you didn't know, different characters in SM64 DS had different abilities when picking up the power flower. Luigi has the invisibility cap, Wario has the metal cap, Yoshi has the fire spit, and Mario has both the wing cap and the p-balloon.
Really good list. I agree with so many of these lol. Personally, I wouldn't put the Yoshi wings on here though, as I don't consider them a power up, instead, as you said, they are more like the secret blocks and vines that do the same thing. Also, funny, when you said what the Goomba mask did, when you said "this power up.." I literally said in my head "..is useless" lol
I feel like this was more of a "least favorite" then "useless" list, but I see your points. As a mini mushroom lover, I'm happy it wasn't there
You can use the Red Star in the hub world too, which isn't too helpful, but it's in more than that one level like you said.
It can definitely help when you need to get to a certain dome faster No matter what side of the observatory you were in because there are two red stars there one in the garage another on top of the bedroom
The fact that yoshi turns blue means that everything he eats that he doesn't immediately turn into a coin will give you flight, not JUST Blue shells(i get the fact that they have wings in Mario Kart now.)
yeah i was kinda triggered at number 9 not gonna lie.
@@nerdmedia9225 Me too!
Making the boxes with the builder suit is nice. The hammer is helpful to attack too!
I'm glad the Gold Flower ain't here this time, because coin producer or not, the gold fireballs are extremely powerful!
My least favorite power up is also the spring power up. Its kinda useless other then the fact you can jump really high.
Can’t wait for nico to react to this in five years
In defense of the Yoshi wings, it's the only way to get a blue Yoshi outside the Star World, and blue is by far the most useful one. It trivializes pretty much any level as long as you find a koopa shell (any colour).... although the game is already pretty easy, so it's not like a top tier powerup or anything.
that coin block does give you an extra hit and it also appeared in new super Mario bros 2
I can see Nico in 5 years reacting to this video and calling it cringe and re-doing it once again.
And will probably make it worse than this one.
The most useful thing about the Red Star is the epic themesong it has, I loved it cause of that
When I saw you put the drill on here I was like “he better also put the spring because that’s WAY worse.” You did not disappoint.
Ah a remake, my childhood all over again
the spring mushroom is only needed once in the whole series
Not true
@@Homing3000 toy time's third star at the start
@@markerikson7423 actually, you can reach that set of walls with a very precise triple jump and spin, though I'd argue that's the only time where the spring mushroom actually made the game easier. It is required for 2 things though, that one purple coin in Beach Bowl Galaxy, as well as Matter Splatter Galaxy. For Beach Bowl Purple Coins, just collect that one purple coin with the spring mushroom, get into the water, and collect the 99 other purple coins as basic Mario. For Matter Splatter Galaxy, yeah sorry, you have to use the spring mushroom in the 2nd 3rd of the Galaxy, the other 2 3rds are spring mushroom free thankfully. Toy Time Galaxy can be entirely done spring mushroomless however. Oh, and you don't need the spring mushroom at all to 100% Mario Galaxy 2, thank god.
@@charliep7112 forgot about beach bowl
@@markerikson7423 it really hurts too, because Beach Bowl Purple Coins can be done almost spring mushroomless. If there was a way to get slightly more hight, you wouldn't even need it. Also, why is the spring mushroom in Beach Bowl Galaxy? More specifically, it's Beach Bowl's purple coin comet, that's so weird, the spring mushroom doesn't even fit with the theme of Beach Bowl Galaxy. In other galaxies the spring mushroom was in, the spring mushroom at least made sense with the galaxy's theme. Toy Time Galaxy, kid's bedroom with toys, okay, that's the set piece, and springs can be considered a toy, I mean, slinky are springs after all. Matter Splatter Galaxy, strange world where the ground semi exists, so sure, the spring mushroom still fits the weirdness of that galaxy. Clockwork Galaxy, that galaxy was mechanical, and springs are mechanical, so the spring mushroom makes sense here. But Beach Bowl Galaxy? I mean, I guess you can find springs in the ocean, but I don't know if springs make sense to be in a beach.
You can use the red star back at the observatory to fly around but thats pretty much it
A plus about the Red Star is that you can fly and get secret 1-up's!
Completely disagree with Blue Shell, sure you can screw up but that just means you're bad at using it. With practice you can use it for speed running, combos to help you get extra lives/highscores and make you immune to fireballs and other small projectiles.
Also, it makes the enemies wish they weren't #1 and if you use it in the verse battle mode you will burst out laughing while your friend is raging.
And you defeat koopas with there own weapon.
And makes you swim faster

Ok, i get you don't like to control the blue Shell, but is it REALLY worst than goomba mask? (answer: no)
although the blue shell is better then the goomba mask the one in mario maker is pretty cool and good for puzzle levels
@@DiagonalTanooki yeah, but even then, the blue shell is a better power-up

2:19 Blue Yoshi grants the ability to gain wings simply by taking any shell into your mouth.
I personally have no problem with the spring mushroom and don't see why people hate it so much.
yeah, i personally think nico was a bit exaggerating on this vid, the masks arent rlly power-ups but more as a bonus power, blue shell and speing just need practice and if a power-up only appears in one game that doesnt make it a bad one
this video was more for views and likes than actual good content i know him from
Yeah I'm pretty good with the spring mushroom
A lot of people hate the spring mushroom because it controls terribly
The blue shell is actually the best power up in nsmb for going fast tho,,,, if anything the mega mushroom is worse
The Mega Mushroom is really only useful in like 8 levels
Waiting for nico to show his whole collection (hope not all its mario related)
The blue shell powerup is one that needed an update even if it's just it being a toggle to enter the shell instead of it being automatic.
To be honest you should have replace the blue shell with the spring mushroom because the spring mushroom you have more control.
Many people talk about Nico dissing the blue shell when I really hated when Nico dissed the Super Hammer from SMM2.
I actually love the Goomba Mask. I can finally fit into the gamer clan.
Speaking of that I somehow like a power Balloon, however even if I personally didn't face the item, I must agree with you there.
For a Goomba mask, I would find it funny if other character uses it.
Nico:Coins are useless
Arrowstole:So you have chosen death…
Always nice to see a new video !
When i first heard about the Red Star i was hyped for the last worlds because i get to fly on my own in the levels.
And then i found out it was only in the Gateway coin Star and in the hub World, and i was disapointed
I feel like I’m the only one who loved the spring power up as a kid. I loved how the mushroom itself looked and just enjoyed using it
How do you enjoy controlling it? Imagine if you had to do that but this time let’s add motion controls to it it would be Zelda skyward sword all over again? Actually that’s not a bad game terrible example but I’m sure you get the point
@@Juan_blooms I never played skyward sword lol, but I get it, most people hate the controls for the spring. I think it was just that I loved how the mushrooms design worked and as a kid since it was used on so few levels, that I liked the concept of as well I just enjoyed my limited time using it
The idea behind it is so cool however the controls are just the issue but I get it they were trying to make it a springy power app oh and you don’t have to worry about the original Zelda skyward sword for the week anymore they remade it on the switch so now you can use button controls now
I love how the idea of a hammer power came from The Newer Team
The moment we needed it the most, we got it
The shell on new super mario bros DS was very useful, and very fun to use
Another thing that's cringe about the Builder Mario powerup is the fact that when you try to run you come to a complete stop and use your hammer, so if you're trying to escape from something, you end up slowing down and could die as a result.
you can kill thwomps though
"all it gives you is YUCKY COINS"
I will never forget those words
Ayyyyyyyy Nico With Another Video Keep It Up Man!
2:30 well to be fare, when Yoshi turns blue you can now fly when he eats a koopa shell, so that's pretty cool.
I remember watching it and being angry that he said golden flower was bad because it is same as a fire flower
I personally think blue shell is good because you can't be hit by enemies when inside it and you swim a lot faster than normal Mario which helped me with a few tricky star coins that required speed.
No one wants to be friends with a Madlad but maybe the Goomba Mask makes them less of a threat
Super paper Mario for the Wii has a few bad powerups, like the Speed flower which speeds up time and makes platforming harder but you get triple coins and points, the happy flower which makes coins rain from the sky, and star medal which gives you 1000 points
The súper hammer could be a good power up if it could be charged to break several blocks in one go(and use it as a atack), and create bigger Amazon packages.
I think the Power Flower is useful when you're Wario or Luigi, though the problem in general is that its way too situational. Wing Cap has a general use case. Being able to zip across the stages is quite nice. Metal and Vanish Caps are useful when you have them, but you only really need them in certain spots.
Yoshi's fire breath is actually worse than Balloon Mario IMO. You just need it for a few stars and its useless everywhere else (as an attack its outclassed by every other options Yoshi has in Mario 64 DS). Balloon Mario is slow but it can be useful for zipping across levels in places where Wing Cap isn't available. (first Bowser for example)
The power flower would be situational if you weren’t able to swap characters in the middle of a level just by finding their caps
1:48 "and an extra hit point!!"
I hated the boulder powerup in smg2 just because of how fast you go, how easy it is to fall off the stage, and how you can’t change your direction when you roll around (I believe you can only go in one direction once you start the boost.) Spring mushroom is another good contender.
a stroll down rolling lane am i right?
Nico would even say in the supermarket that he doesn't need change because he doesn't like coins! 😂😂😂
The Red Star is like a better version of the Wing Cap
Honestly they should probably get rid of the jumping on enemy’s for 1 ups thing, it’s way too easy to exploit and it as many have point out takes the challenge out of the games by making you immortal
I was going to say that’s kind of pointless because except for a select few tricks infinite live tricks require to have an insane amount of skill and there are only a few areas where you can do it
Great video man you should get more subscribers with all this great content. Btw as we’ve seen on your videos you hate coins. Funny
I totally agree that the spring mushroom was terrible 😞. It is my least favourite powerup that I know about and combine it with the 3rd star in toy time makes it terribly difficult and uninjoyable😞
You have a point. The blue shell kind of sucks since you can’t control it
Except you can. Infact you don't start spinning unless you press down. This guy hasn't even played the game.
@@lunakingsley.7247 that is not true, you start charging as soon as you’re full tilting. I exchange this for a fire flower as soon as I can
I love grabbing the wings when I don't want to backtrack to Star Road for Blue Yoshi.
I had the strongest feeling the spring mushroom would be on this list, the concept on paper was fun, but controlling it is complete garbage, oh.. if only there was a challenge where you had to beat Super Mario Galaxy with the spring equipped at all times...
Blue shell is super useful, you just have to be good at it
