    I'm an avid pc gamer who also loves the outdoors and camping. Taking my Steam Deck OLED with me and laying in my hammock at night playing Doom Eternal with a small fire crackling not to far from me while I sip on some campfire made coffee. True bliss.

    You underestimate the appeal of the Steam Deck to someone who is a PC gamer. I am one and it allows me to play games I'd normally never play. When I'm at my desk, the kind of games I want to play are like Kingdom Come Deliverance, Gates of Hell and Cyberpunk 2077, games that are either very immersive or require a lot out of me mentally and make it hard for me to get distracted by anything. On the other hand, when I'm away from my desk I can use the Steam Deck to play games like Ender Lilies or Witch Spring R which would be borderline impossible for me to play at my desk because I'd notice that I have a second monitor which is displaying things that aren't the game. The form factor and freedom to play it wherever makes the Steam Deck a different experience from regular PC gaming. For me it has widened the choice of games I could play by a huge amount.

      It seems I was misunderstood. I feel the appeal of this is far greater realized by traditional console gamers. It would seem that the majority of people who game on pc, specifically a gaming rig, would find this to be more of a gadget than a viable gaming solution. That being said, there are always outliers

    • @tiikerihai
      @tiikerihai Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@julienmelnick No, I get that's what you mean and I don't think that's correct. Sitting at your gaming PC is kind of a commitment. So there are lots of games on the PC that gaming rig owners would love to play, but just don't because they lack the drive to commit.
      Before I got the Steam Deck I didn't think I'd use it at all, but the people who told me that it's a backlog slayer weren't wrong. Keep in mind that with years of steam sales, lots of PC gamers have dozens, sometimes hundreds of games they haven't played. Games that are perfect for the Steam deck, but don't seem substantial or interesting enough to entice the gamer on a high end rig to get started. I don't think I'm the exception when it comes to being a PC gamer with a huge backlog. It's actually pretty common.

      I love it. I just built a PC with a 4090 and I have this odd feeling of guilt when I play games that don't utilize the power. Steam deck is perfect for those less demanding titles. Plus being able to play games like BG3 and D4 on my pc then switch to playing it in bed on my deck is just incredible

      That's a respectable position. While I personally think the Deck is the better device overall, I noticed a significant portion of those who expressed disappointment with the Deck were looking forward to playing something the Deck can't play, like Destiny 2 or Fortnite. Those few games aside, I think you'll find that a very significant portion of those so-called "unsupported" games in your library actually run fine, and they do update the list monthly. Not that it matters now since you have a Windows device. I hope your Legion Go gives you many hours of enjoyment.

    I have a gaming PC ( it's having some issues recently, but that's another story), and I started referring to my Steam Deck alot for gaming for a few reasons:
    One, sitting on a couch stationary for hours playing a game is becoming more and more an antiquated idea ( for me), as the Switch opened up pandora's box when it comes to flexibility playing a fully fleshed out portable system that also doubles as a home console. The Deck took the Switch concept and turned it up a few notches.
    Second, and this may be more of an outlier reason, with the cost of living being what it is nowadays the Deck allows me the option to play my PC library on a device with lower power draw, which of course is good for my wallet when it comes to my monthly electric bill. Of course there are some sacrifices in fidelity, but those factors for me have been fair trade-offs. I've finished more games on my Deck than any other system recently, and I look forward to the portable PC handheld market evolving.
    Actually a third reason is the types of games I play like 80% of the time now are Indies and older games( emulation), with the odd AAA/AAA game from like the 7th-8th gen time period. The Deck is great for that purpose because it runs alot of that stuff really well.

    The only game I have played on pc is wow really. I bought a full razer laptop gaming setup and I've just sold it after it gathered dust for 3 years.
    As a busy dad, finding time for gaming is a challenge. But it's made much easier utilising handheld gaming consoles like the Nintendo switch and now steam deck.
    You said it, the simplicity of booting straight into a game carrying on where you left off its just magic.
    I considered upgrading to the ROG Ally but I played with my mates and decided to stick with my LCD steam deck. In fact he sold his Ally and bought the deck oled.
    Performance alone doesn't make a good gaming experience.

  • @stvnoahc7249

    I just can never understand why you didn’t like the original deck😂 I say that because I loved mine. And I love the oled even more. Way more, because it offers the best balanced gaming experience on a handheld. Great battery life and amazing ergonomics.
    I also have the rog ally. So I completely agree with you when you said performance isn’t the end all and be all. Yes the ally is powerful compared to the deck…but I get 45 mins and it needs to be plugged in again. If I can’t travel with it it’s not a great handheld imo.

    The reason that handheld PCs ended up not working for me, came down to one simple thing, there is no game I will play on them, let me elaborate
    If I want to play a graphically demanding game, I'll play it on my Series X or PS5, because on the Steam Deck the downgrade is big and the over all experience not so good (terrible battery life, noisy, hot, etc)
    And If I want to play games that are not graphically demanding or Nintendo exclusives, I'll get them on the Switch because the convenience the usability and the reliability that it provides is unmatched
    So all of that made my Steam Deck useless, and this is why i gave it away, that doesn't mean that I can't see the value on those systems, if you are a PC gamer (with all of your games on Steam etc) they are a great thing to have along your gaming PC

    Actually. i have a very powerful desktop pc. The steamdeck actually has a very VERY good use-case for people like me. If you have Wifi 6e Having a remote play device with 90hz refresh, OLED and 10+ hrs of battery with full max gfx is extremely appealing for me. You cannot even tell that it isn't running natively. I can sit on the couch or in bed and still have my powerful gfx without sitting at my desk. and in a pinch thanks to cloud saves i can play some light games away from my house and just swap between home and my deck.

    I just wish the steam deck had Gamepass on it where you could download to the console. That's where the PC handhelds are attractive to me, personally. I get more value out of my gamepass subscription and yet still have steam and all the other launchers. Deck OLED is still a great device if you have a nice steam library.

    I feel like after you get deeper into PC gaming over a year or so, you'll look back at this video and think what was I saying lol. Everyone has to start somewhere. You'll see cool things people have done with their steam deck customizations and want to do it yourself. See emulation and rom hacks and maybe try them out. Maybe even give retroachievments a shot. See the free PC games from epic, gog, twitch, etc and build up hundreds of games.... and yes, even be comfortable changing your OS lol. You remembered me haha.
    PC gaming is a larger learning curve for sure, but it offers back as much as you are willing to put in. Good luck and good talk.

  • @switchunboxing
    @switchunboxing Před 8 měsíci

    Your multitasking ability is unmatched lol! I am the same as you, I have never had a gaming PC. But after six years of the switch, I’m starting to get tired of these blurry ports. So I have been looking at reviews of the ROG ally and steam deck all week. I just think the Ally looks so much better, and I love that it’s so slim, but that battery life is atrocious. But it nearly runs all those PC games. So I’m still trying to decide, but since I don’t game on the go all the time, I might be going with the Ally. I think it’s going to be a better future proofing.
    Ask for your microphone, I have been looking for a good lav!! I too use a shotgun mic but for my content that I do, it’s entirely unfitting. It’s way overdue that I find a good microphone to clip to my shirt so I can just freely move around and talk. Currently whenever I am recording an unboxing video, I have to really make sure I am putting my mouth towards the microphone, and when I can’t do that, I am recording the voice and the visuals separately. I will be able to record, and edit, so much faster if I just had a lav mic LOL.

    • @switchunboxing
      @switchunboxing Před 8 měsíci

      Also, I don’t know why you wouldn’t want an overhead cam, except for just workflow, efficiency and speed. I think it’s absolutely going to make your content better and improved retention rate. I want to do that, but what’s a good boom arm? I really don’t know how to get a good overhead shot. Currently my videos are recorded with tripod, and even that is not the best. I really need to upgrade my workflow as far as recording goes. I got one of these little clamp things I put on the table, but he just doesn’t seem sturdy at all. Compared to a tripod that’s just literally standing on the table. I feel like you can’t get better than that. But really it is a pain because again I can’t just record freely. I have to hold my arms around the tripod.

      Steam Deck for sure.
      I have not stumbled over a game yet that doesn't run and i would even say that there are more games which are playable on the steam deck than on the ally. You just can't play games like rts or like cities skylines in a nice way with joysticks. The trackpads work WAY better for that than I expected and the performance is definitely good enough at the moment. Just because there is an ally with higher performance the steam deck doesn't just become useless.

    • @The8bitbeard
      @The8bitbeard Před 8 měsíci

      I recommend the Deck by default, but if your potential enjoyment of the device hinges upon your ability to play a select few multiplayer titles that won't run on the Deck due to aggressive anti-cheat, like Destiny 2, Call of Duty, or Fortnite, consider the ROG Ally or Legion Go instead. If you can't play what you want to play, you won't enjoy it. As for me, I'm not big on multiplayer, so I've really been enjoying my Deck OLED.

    • @switchunboxing
      @switchunboxing Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@The8bitbeard Yeah I’m really looking between Ally and Legion Go now. Haven’t completely ruled out Steam Deck but it’s last on the list. Legion might be too big but detachable controllers are perfect. Hopefully Best Buy has each of these so I can just test drive both.

  • @switchunboxing
    @switchunboxing Před 8 měsíci

    Interesting I’m kind of like you in that I am thinking of picking up one of these handheld‘s, for niche reasons with content as well. I kind of just want to start playing on my Xbox. But if I get a steam deck or ROG Ally I can still continue with the handheld theme, at least. Even though I will be not doing exclusively Nintendo at that point. I’m still kind of disappointed, because when it comes to twitch, I want people to know that what they see is Nintendo, and that no matter what I am playing, they can play it on their handheld Nintendo device. But honestly, maybe it’s just not worth it and maybe it’s not that big of a deal. I think at this point, a lot of people have devices other than just the switch. But I’m not sure about that. I’m just tired of all of these ports being blurry. No one wants to see blurry footage on twitch.

      Actually, Valve did an excellent job making the Steamdeck very modular once you pop the backplate off. You can easily replace the joysticks yourself with parts from ifixit whom Valve is partnered with. No soldering, just pop old ones out and pop new ones in. If you grab the LCD Steamdeck, you can even upgrade to hall effect joysticks.

      As a dad, I just don't have the time to sit down anymore and game in a secluded room or take away the TV from the family. Multiplayer games also became cumbersome as I had to play around schedules or not game at all. I work too, so gaming late is out of the question, too tired and much rather be around my wife and kids.
      So I sold my PS4 and PSVR as it collected dust, my gaming died years ago for me due to what I said previously. I thought buying new consoles would fix my situation, it didn't, and like my PS4 - my fancy PS5 also gathered sheets of dust. Ran into the same issues as before, just didn't have much time to sit down to play it.
      Now when the Steamdeck was announced, I was hesitant. I had two laptops and two desktops previously before consoles, loathed them. I always ran into issues and slowly grew to absolutely hate Windows, to the breaking point in causing me to jump to the simplicity of consoles decades ago. From what I read, the Steamdeck was going to try to be that bridge for console gamers like myself to a PC like environment. So I bought it once pre-orders were available. Since owning it these past few years...
      My love of gaming returned thanks to the Steamdeck. The simplicity of Steam OS, the community surrounding it with QOL improvements (emudeck, Decky, guides), and the ease of the stop and resume feature has been fantastic! I can play anywhere, at anytime, especially around my family. Sold my PS5, and in return got more games and SD cards, haven't missed it one iota. So as a previous console gamer, yes, many of us did go out and grabbed a Steamdeck. In my case, it even replaced my consoles due to my lifestyle.
      If it wasn't for the Steamdeck, I wouldn't even be gaming right now, so I appreciate what Valve did in making the device. It may not be the most powerful thing out there, but like many I'm ok with the performance it does provide, temper my expectations (or lower settings), and appreciate the battery life so I'm not tethered to a cord. I liked the device so much, I even grabbed the OLED model as a Christmas present for myself as my upgrade. It may not be perfect, but it's been perfect for me and many others.
