  • There are no words folks, but BBC is reporting that Sean Connery, one of the most iconic actors of all time, has passed away, aged 90. Connery's health had been fragile in recent years, and he hadn't made a big-screen appearance since THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN back in 2003. Of course, Connery is one of the most iconic actors of all time, being the first and - in the minds of many - the best James Bond. From his now-legendary "Bond, James Bond" introduction in DR. NO to his triumphant return to the role in 1983's renegade Bond production, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN after more than a decade away, he's always been strongly identified with the role, but there was more to him than that.
While initially, he struggled to break free of the typecasting associated with the part, Connery was always smart about choosing the best collaborators, including Sidney Lumet, for whom he appeared in THE HILL, THE ANDERSON TAPES (opposite a young Christopher Walken), THE OFFENSE and FAMILY BUSINESS, John Boorman (with whom he made the now-infamous ZARDOZ) and more. Connery wasn't afraid to take risks. His career truly rebounded in the mid-seventies when he starred opposite his long time pal Michael Caine in John Huston's THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, but kicked into high gear in the mid-eighties. First, there was HIGHLANDER, then THE NAME OF THE ROSE, and finally his Oscar win for THE UNTOUCHABLES, where he notably warned an assassin, you don't bring a knife to a gunfight.
From there, he was back on the A-list, taking on some of his most iconic non-Bond roles, including Henry Jones Sr. in INDIANA JONES & THE LAST CRUSADE, Marko Ramius in THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, and a very Bond-like former MI6 agent in Michael Bay's classic, THE ROCK, where he mentored Nicolas Cage in the art of being an action hero.

diamonds are the biggest financial hoax in human history
diamonds are crystalline molecules of one of the most common element:
      Carbon ...
      -
      the difference between natural and industrial diamonds is that the natural ones are impure and stupid expensive: $2,500 to $18,000 / carat;
while industrial diamonds are the most perfect crystalline formations and the most pure; while being pitiful cheap: $7 to $10 / carat
      -
with tools bought at a normal Tool-shop and decent knowledge, one can make a diamond out of his own fecals...
diamonds can be (easily) ignited and burn to ashes,
and melt at half the temperature of Iron with the resulting poop smelling like rotten flesh ...

James Bond is Scottish because of Sean Connery and not the other way around. When Ian Fleming saw Connery as Bond he gave Bond a Scottish background in later novels.
Connery did an enormous favour to working-class actors in the UK as well as changing how the world saw Scots, like myself. He'll be missed but I intend to write to the Scottish parliament and push for a statue in our home city of Edinburgh. It should sit in Princes Street Garden so Edinburgh castle is seen behind it. He was more than just an actor to Scots, he brought great national pride to our nation and instilled the belief a working-class Scot could rub shoulders with the wealthiest and most important people in the world without giving up who they are or where they came from.

You're right, he never forgot his humble beginnings. Donated his earnings from Diamonds Are Forever to Scotland. Carried a tattoo on his arm with the inscription "SCOTLAND FOREVER. And favored Scottish independence which delayed his being knighted.

@@garymorell6924 - Aye, he used his entire fee from Diamonds are Forever to found The International Scottish Educational Trust which helps fund the education of Scots. He believed all people should have access to higher education. Now in Scotland, all higher education if free, inspired by organisations like this. But you can even use their money to help study abroad.

Yes... Almost Cadfael the movie !
The funny thing (and one of the reasons he and Norrington hated each other on League) is that once he had learned a dialogue, Connery literally couldn't change it. During a rehearsal for a scene from Name Of The Rose, someone noticed they said sandals instead of shoes, giving a major clue about the murder. So they changed the dialogue... BUT Connery, whatever how hard he tried, could NOT NOT SAYING 'SANDALS'. So, in the end, they shot the line from Sean's back and changed it in post-production.
A few decades later... Norrington tried to save League by changing things on a daily basis, and Connery COULDN'T do it... therefore, one of the MANY REASONS they rapidly hated each other !

His own favorite role and the one he was most proud of was in "The Man Who Would Be King" - which was based on Rudyard Kipling's famous novel of the same name. Michail Caine, who played his companion, was also the most proud of it. He also liked "Murder on the Orient Express" (the original) in which he was cast alongside a whole batch of great actors and actresses - and which was nominated for 7 Oscars. Those films will remain classics long after his "adventure roles" become passé for modern generations.

He was a true 20th century icon. My father was a huge fan and I watched my first James Bond film when I was 7 years old. I got to watch all his late 80s and 90s work in the theatre and even the bad ones were always better because he was in them. Time will not diminish the diversity of roles and risks that Sir Sean took over his career. He was a true scrapper from a bygone age who pulled himself to heights most will only imagine. Rest In Peace Sir Sean, this world will not see your like again.

What a legend and for me and countless others he will always be THE James Bond.
Usually when celebrities that I'm a fan of pass away it doesn't really bother me to a point where I feel overwhelming sadness but I'm not going to lie, this one got to me a bit.
I've watched his Bond films hundreds of times since my father first introduced me to James Bond as a boy and his Bond films are hence extremely sentimental to me. When I became a father 9 years ago I too made sure that my daughter eventually got to know the legend that is Sean Connery's James Bond and she frequently asks to watch Goldfinger (her favourite) after which I tell her that if we do James Bond we start from the 1st movie and work our way through all of them (the Connery Bond films). I think she and I should do another Bond festival this weekend in honour of the great man.
Oddly enough my daughter felt like listening to "James Bond" music this morning in the car while I was taking her to school and she browsed through my in-car flash drive to the "Best of Bond" folder and when she played the Goldfinger and Thunderball Theme songs I couldn't help getting a lump in my throat and I felt myself having to hold back a few tears.
RIP Sean Connery and thank you for the memories and the nostalgia. You will never be forgotten and I will honour your memory for as long as I live.
