    You’re right when you said that you don’t have to get all the glue off when cleaning up. Sometimes that old dried up glue makes for a better contact point for the new glue.

    Awesome job, very helpful 👏 my only critique is you should cut the carpet out in the same direction so you can't see the carpet grain going in different directions.. 😀

  • @larrytanton5787
    @larrytanton5787 Před 4 lety +6

    Instead of marking where hinges screw holes are i used a needle to poke until i found the hole pretty easy to do. No doubt doing the lids are the most time consuming part. And do not forget folks the carpet needs to go in one direction will not look right if lids are cut in a different direction has the decks, remember this before cutting the carpet.

  • @chadbrace2914
    @chadbrace2914 Před rokem +3

    The carpet needs to always be run the same direction or it will look different colors; I know as I made this mistake on my first carpet job. Think of it as if the carpet had arrows on it and you want the arrows to all point toward the front of the boat, you can't rotate a lid 90 degrees and cut it out to save carpet or the arrows will be pointing to the side of the boat (the lid will look way darker or lighter than the deck). It takes way more carpet but it is very noticeable if you just lay the carpet to use the least amount of carpet.

    Very helpful video. I used your video to help with my older boat remodel. All carpet replaced. I carpeted storage covers first. When I was working on deck I used the carpeted covers to hold the edges of openings tight. Just pushed the carped lid down into the matching opening. Worked well. Again, thanks for your video, informative.

    Keep in mind the thickness of the new carpet. Those hatches fit pretty tight. If the new carpet is thicker you might have some problems as the hatches might not close.

    • @steveking8548
      @steveking8548 Před rokem +1

      If your carpet ends up being too thick, there are ways to "shave" it or thin it out at the edges of the lid.

    Great Video. Wonderful hints and suggestions from your experience so a BIG THAN YOU for sharing. After watching your video it has given me the confidence to do my 1992 Ranger 481V.
    One thing I did notice that I will do differently is make sure to mark the direction to the bow on every lid bottom and make sure all the carpet has the grain running in the same direction. Probably turn new carpet over (before any cuts) and add a bunch of arrow direction marks to keep me in the correct direction too.
    It is a small detail and not many would notice a difference. Look at the large front center lid in your video and see how the color shading is catching the light differently.
    Thanks again for giving me the push i needed. Very nice editing job as well.

  • @davidhefner5668
    @davidhefner5668 Před 3 lety

    Viewers...I have done this a hundred of times and this guy knows what he is doing. So there would be no point making another video. Keep in mind every boat is different and each takes a little forethought. Take your time and be careful with the cuts because you don't want to ruin the carpet. Try to keep the grain of the carpet running in the same direction like the hair on a horse...so to speak. When laying it horizontally, make it smooth going down and rough coming up...that way it will look better.

  • @clarkhovermale9187
    @clarkhovermale9187 Před 3 lety +8

    You might point out the orientation or lay of the carpet, if you turn it 90 deg or reverse it, it can look different. In other words it should run the same from the front of the boat to the back. Looking at the reverse side can help you.

    • @bobsmith1841

      I saw that on the second segment. The flow of the grain was not maintained. It’ll look different from the other sections. You gotta keep the grain the same throughout the project.

    The only thing I would add is that if you’re doing a full on restoration is to do all the finishing work on the gel coat areas before putting in the new carpet. The polishing process with a buffer can be messy and having the ability to wash it all out and let it dry nicely before putting in the new carpet is actually much easier and cleaner. Other than that your walk through is dead on the way it’s done. Also, showing how to relief cut the deck pull holes and chair holes is a handy thing to know. It’s not hard, but a slip can mean a do-over carpet job on that lid. I’ve done it…

    You did a great job and your video is very informative, BUT in my humble opinion that could have been the worst color to use for keeping clean looking. I know you chose it to complement the color of the boat, but I'm curious to see what it looks like after 2 years. My 2002 Tracker Pro Deep V16 boat came with a light beige carpet a few shades darker than the carpet you chose and it looks like crap and extremely difficult to keep clean from dirt, fish slime, fish blood, etcetera. I'm going with a medium to slightly darker than medium grey. Your video will really help me out. I have a wood floor though throughout the boat deck that I will need to unscrew and lift out first. I will glue but will also staple the carpet 2 inches past onto the bottom of the plywood floor. Thanks for your efforts in putting this video together.

    If you heat the lids if there non flammable material obviously the glue peels off clean and its less work but no one i know does that

    Great video. I only wish my carpet look 1/8 as good as your ratty carpet! So I don't have a templet. Also I notice you didn't reinstall the upper deck in the front. That is something I would like to add to my EbbTide

    Use a big needle to find holes for screws. Just push needle through the carpet until you locate the hole.

    How long does it take for that glue to dry? And when you cut you holes for you seat poles, just use you box cutter, like how do you make that a clean cut?

    Great video, need to do my 95 17' Ranger next Summer.. I need to figure out how to remove my seats though, they need to be replaced too, Skeet looks pretty simple, but My ranger I believe is different as it doesn't want to budge.

    Carpet run in directions, when laying the carpet you wanted to run the same direction and look at the colors on the carpet it’s not running in one same direction… other wise nice job 👍

    I had a boat just like that, I bought it new and it had tan carpet in it.

    Nice job! I had my ‘93 ZX175 (same color scheme) done in a dark grey so I didn’t think the tan would go well but you convinced me otherwise. On a side note, I cracked my passenger side wind screen and would love to find a replacement if anyone here knows where I could find one. Those ‘94 screens look identical.

      I have been doing boats for 40 years and the carpet I got from BassBoatsSeats.Com was the worst carpet I have ever bought, The fraying was awful, had rubber backing missing,They sent me another roll and it was worse than the first roll, I videoed unwrapping it and showed them,And the vendor told them that was the way it was supposed to be.... But great job on the boat, Looks like they sent you some good carpet...

  • @UnlockingSecretsofTheUniverse

    right on BrrruH! going to do my boat carpet now.
