  • @Bodyknock
    @Bodyknock Před 10 měsíci +6

    One of my favorite behind the scenes stories about this movie is that, in the scene where the alien bursts out of John Hurt's chest, the director Ridley Scott didn't tell the other actors precisely what was happening. The script just said that "something emerges" but, than Hurt, the other actors had no idea they were about to get literally sprayed with gore and such to help make their shock more authentic when it happened.

    • @erikbjelke4411
      @erikbjelke4411 Před 4 měsíci +2

      That's not really how it happened. The scene is described in some detail in the script, so they knew the Alien was coming out of his chest. What they didn't know was exactly how the effect would be achieved, since no one had tried something like it before. They got to the part where they got Kane on the table, then all the actors were told to break for lunch, except John Hurt, since he needed to be glued into the effects rig. Tom Skerritt also stuck around to watch the effects guys get set up, so he knew a bit more about how it was going to work, but even he didn't fully understand what they were about to see. When the rest of the cast came back, all the crew were in raincoats and all the equipment was draped in plastic, and there were barrels of blood and guts from a local butcher shop around, so everyone kind of knew what to expect, but not really. Veronica Cartwright was told "you'll get a little blood on you," but had the misfortune to stand right in the path of one of the blood tubes, so something like a full liter went right at her, most hitting her square in the eye, so her horrified "Oh, God!" was very authentic.
      In short, yes the cast did know what was going to happen, but not precisely what it would look like or how it would be achieved. The scene was so radically new, so different from anything that had been filmed before, that everyone, cast and audiences, reacted to it as if it was real.

      Yeah, _Aliens_ may be more of an action movie, but it still has jump-scares and other similar classic horror elements as the first movie. The only "relief" is that you can more easily kill the Aliens or Xenomorphs with guns, but the plural title hints at a different kind of terror: being empowered but still being overwhelmed and feeling trapped nevertheless.

    this movie works so well because it doesn't focus on the creature. it's about the fear of the unknown. to me that's what puts this movie up on all sequels including predator. On a big ship with many dark corridors . Most of the movie is the anticipation of what will happen. the lost art of creating atmosphere putting people in vulnerable situations makes for great horror. the creature is just the icing on the cake

      The original script for _Alien_ didn't give the characters genders; you'll notice only last names are used in the dialogue. Ripley is a great character not because she's a woman, but because she's the most practical and sensible character in the film, and we root for her because she's been right all along, and deserves to survive.
      Sarah Connor, on the other hand, we root for because of the burden she carries. She knows the future and doubtlessly realizes she won't be there, so prepares her son for it as best she can while she can, dedicating her life to that purpose. Her decisions aren't always the best, but she perseveres.

The set design, the brilliant lighting, and the sound design all combine to create an atmosphere that never lets up. Alien - funhouse. Most of the time you're jumping at shadows and your own imagination. But sometimes... sometimes something really does jump out at you. And then you're out the door... though for a few seconds you're still not absolutely sure the experience is over.
    Aliens - roller coaster. You start out with that long build-up to what you KNOW is coming and then whoosh - you're in to the action. Fear and thrills and action and adrenaline and there's no question that the slow bits are setting you up for the next drop and more action and adrenaline. And then it's over. You're climbing out of your seat - heart pounding.
    They absolutely both should be viewed.

    Alien is amazing.
    One of the key parts is the design of the adult Alien by HR Giger. One of the two writers, Dan O'Bannon, had started work on Jodorowsky's failed Dune adaptation, and met HR Giger on that production. O'Bannon recommend Giger's art book to Ridley Scott, director of Alien, who saw one of Giger's paintings and knew THAT was the Alien. Giger modified the design slightly, but created a creature that is just unsettling to look at, terrifying and grotesque but also beautiful.
    Then there's the way Ridley shot the Alien. He didn't want to make a movie about a "man in a suit," and so carefully and deliberately decides what he's going to show you, and it's never much. This had led to a popular myth that the Alien is different in every shot, continually growing larger through the film, or both. That's not true, only one Alien costume was made and, for the most part, only one actor wore it. But Ridley never really lets you get a good look at it, and draws your focus to different parts of it each time, so it always looks new and mysterious.
    But what an example of what a film's reputation can do, terrifying our reactor before it even properly starts, just on its reputation as one of the greatest sci-fi horror films of all time. And then it goes on to actually live up to that reputation.

The rest of the cast knew that Kane was going to go into convulsions on the table, but non of them were told about the exploding blood packs taped to his chest. Ridley Scott wanted a genuine reaction from the cast with this scene. That actress slipping on the fake blood, that was real. Everyone's reactions to the first blood packs exploding, that was real. Let's give Addie a round of applause for surviving Alien (1979). 👏👏 Nice reaction, BTW. This is actually your best reaction since The Dark Knight (2008), especially with that Addie scream, at 15:46, when the Xenomorph kills Dallas. Alien is one of my favorite sci-fi horror films. I first heard of this movie after going on the former Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. And yes, Xenomorphs are terrifying, and yes, chestbursters slither like snakes, which you don't like. I can also agree with you that this Ridley Scott movie was very well done indeed, especially with Derek Vanlint's cinematography in Panavision (anamorphic).

Kane is played by the late John Hurt (Ollivander in Harry Potter). And my favorite shot in the movie is at 5:22, when Kane is lowered down, while exploring Acheron (LV-426), because of the anamorphic lens flare that emits from his flashlight, because of the movie's Panavision.

    Congrats, Addie! "Alien" is about as scary as movies get. "Aliens," though, is more of an action / adventure film, maybe slightly more intense than "Terminator" or "Terminator 2," so you should be fine with it.
    For a change of pace, you can try "V For Vendetta." It's a thoughtful action film based on a comic book. It has excellent dialogue and acting, and a memorable story.

    Since you reacted to the original Star Wars Trilogy, you should definitely check out "Spaceballs"! What is that, you're wondering? Well, it's mainly a parody of Star Wars. It was directed by the king of comedy, Mel Brooks (who also directed movies like "Blazing Saddles", "The Producers" (the original '60s version, not the 2000s remake, though he WAS involved in it), and of course, "Young Frankenstein"), and is a REALLY funny movie!!! I think you'll love that one! Anyway, rest in peace to some of the cast in this film, including Sir Ian Holm (Ash) and Sir John Hurt (Kane).

    I was 15 when this came out. I had to step out the last 12 minutes or so. I had reached my scare threshold. Ripley running back and forth the siren alarms and strobing light. Right after I stepped out a lady came out on a mad beeline to the women's rest room. I wouldn't see the whole movie until I was about 24. Like 1985/86 I finally watched the whole thing. One of the most terrifying films to close out the 1970's. You did great though. Great reaction Addie. There isn't much music in this film as that's how Ridley Scott planned it. He relied on natural sounds to convey suspense and low light level, the corridors. This gives a claustrophobic atmosphere. Also he showed just enough of the alien to make it terrifying. Xenomorphs molt and when they do they grow fast. Especially this xenomorph.

      I would recommend watching the theatrical release of Aliens, first. Then watch the Director's Cut to see the extra scenes.
      For me, even though Aliens isn't a horror movie, walking into Hadley's Hope completely blind results in a really satisfying tension. Seeing it ahead of time, for even a minute or two prior, defuses that a lot.
      The extra scenes are great, as extras. But, I think the theatrical release is a tighter experience, for the first viewing.
      Just my minuscule opinion.

      Not quite true. It was scripted, they were shown a mock up, told it's head will move and that it would have teeth but it's true they didn't see the final model until the scene. The first take is the one with the 'lump' in the shirt which wasn't supposed to happen, it was supposed to come out all in one take partly because Scott knew the blood would go everywhere !. So they cleared the set, Scott sliced the shirt with a razor so it would finally burst through properly. What was definitely not planned was the distance the fake blood would be squirted and the reaction of Veronica Cartwright when she got a jet full on the face is real. She actually passed out from the shock and Yaphet Kotto stormed off set afterwards and refused to see anyone. 😂

    I bet you would have been fun to go see this movie with when it came out originally in theaters... LOL.
    During preproduction, the studio offered many suggestions to the writing and directing team. All of them were rejected...except one: Making Ash a robot. One idea that some of the team came up with, that luckily got rejected, was a different ending: Ripley gets killed by the alien in the escape shuttle, the alien climbs into the pilot's seat and then makes a distress call...in Captain Dallas' voice!
    The sequel to this movie, Aliens, is considered by many to be one of the best sequels of all time. And I agree with them. They are different kinds of movies but both excellent in their own ways. This one is a slow burn, atmospheric sci-fi horror whereas the sequel is more of a straight up action suspense movie with horror elements. Both five star movies though.

    This is such a great film. It's a masterclass in restraint. You keep thinking "oh this is it" but it isn't it. It keeps building. It keeps getting worse. The anxiety keeps ratcheting up. And the further in you get the faster it goes. Brilliant visual effects. Great writing. Incredible sets. Sound design is incredible. The jump scares are overused purely to desensitize you to them so when the real scary one hits you aren't prepared for it. It's so good. Iconic creature design as well. The Xenomorphs are the stuff of nightmares. And even if things after the sequel aren't as good, they aren't horrible. They're still worth watching.

The autopsy was a soft shell crab and oysters stuffed in the puppet.

    Xenomorph life cycle :
    Queen lays eggs (those big "blooming" things the crew was snooping at) ;
    Eggs hatch those "face-hugger" things. They find suitable hosts and insert the Xenomorph "embryo" into the host ;
    Xenomorph incubates, and "hatches" by busting out of the host, killing it.
    Occasionally, a face-hugger will implant another "queen" embryo (this is addressed in the 3rd Alien film).
    The Xenomorphs can take on a variety of appearances, usually based on the host, acquiring the physiological attributes, which is why these particular Xenos have human-like proportions.

    Alien is one of the greatest films of all time; regardless of genre. I’ve written several pieces on the design of Alien. Had Dan O’Bannon & Ridley Scott not found HR Giger’s book ‘Necronomicon’, who knows what we could’ve ended up with. Scott was familiar with Giger’s work due to him being hired to work on Scott’s failed adaptation of Dune.
    Nothing will beat the time I got to see a special 70mm IMAX print of Alien…it looks absolutely stunning!!
    Fun Facts: The scene where Parker & Lambert die was originally much longer & Veronica Cartwright has even stated in interviews that what you see is a lot different. Basically, if you notice, as the tail goes between Lamberts legs, it isn’t actually Lambert; her costume featured cowboy boots…& the feet we see are actually Brett’s.
    Also, there’s a little know cut of the film that features Ripley finding Parker dead & Lambert naked from the waist down, suspended. Cartwright went on record & said that she spent part of the shoot suspended in a harness; but the scene was cut down to what we see in the theatrical cut.
    The Nostromo set was all connected; as it would’ve been had the craft been real. That combined with the fact it had a really low ceiling helps add to the hot, claustrophobic atmosphere & this helped drive the performance’s.
    Please ensure you watch the directors cut of Aliens & then onto the Assembly Cut of Alien 3.
    There’s not much to say about Aliens other than it’s just about perfect. Alien 3 however is something of a flawed masterpiece. It was David Fincher’s directorial debut & due to studio meddling, rewrites etc, we were left with a semi coherent film that to this day Fincher refuses to talk about.
    The assembly cut, fixes a lot of problems & several cast members returned to record enhanced dialogue for the reintroduced scenes. Alien 3 still divides fans due to its bleak, post apocalyptic look. But it’s the perfect ending to an excellent trilogy of films.
    Fun Fact: The Nostromo model was restored a few years back & sold at auction to a certain NZ director for $500’000!!!
