  • Unreal 5.4's new Motion Design toolset provides functionality to use ojects to mask one another to make creating animated motion graphics masking effects much easier.
While these masking effects work fine with Motion Design materials, traditional asset materials don't already have the required MF_ApplyMask2D function in their setups to enable the masking functionality.
This video shows how to add this material function to your asset-based materials so you can still use masking effects in Motion Design while also using non-Motion Design materials.

    Some minor corrections:
    1. You don't need to make your material Translucent if it's not already, this will be done for you.
    2. Translucent materials are used when the mask is feathered, Masked if not.
    3. Make sure you plug the custom function's Opacity output into BOTH Opacity Mask AND Opacity, so your material will support both scenarios.

Now try to output this animation on a Rundown to see if the mask still works. Mine dont.

The official version 5.4 has been released, but the bug where multi-layer effects cannot be saved by the motion design material designer has not been resolved yet...
