    Property prices in Bristol are nine times average earnings. That’s forced teaching assistants Mark and Sarah to live in a van on the city’s streets for two years in order to save up for a deposit on a flat. They’re just two of an estimated 600 people living in vehicles in Bristol. Another person in the film is 80-year-old Cameron. He has mobility issues and a number of medical conditions which means he needs to stay close to the local hospital

    Iv just found myself to becoming homeless in 6 weeks 😢 Iv lived in my current rented property in Bristol for 17 years. I am a full time carer for my two autistic children. Iv been looking for another rental for 7 months with no luck due to being grossly out priced or discriminated against for not being able to work. I went to Bristol city council yesterday to get help I was told to wait until I’m evicted by bailiffs only then they will put me and my special needs boys in emergency accommodation of which I’ll be waiting a minimum of 18 to 24 for permanent social housing. I wish I could get a caravan and be free of all these constraints of how the system is currently run. Greed is the root cause of so many peoples suffering. You are not truly rich until you have something money can not buy

      Trouble is living in a van doesn’t free you from life’s constraints. Just changes them. It isn’t as easy as it looks. I’ve just done 4 years in vans and trust me there’s two sides to it. Same as living in a house. Horses for courses. You’re still living as part of the system in a van, just in a van.
      Hope you’re circumstances improve : have improved.

    I can't remember a time in all my 60 years living in the UK when my choices were so limited and the cost of living so onerous. The 2008 financial crash, 13 years of austerity & Brexit have made life far harder. I can only see things getting worse.

      Life keeps getting worse as the years go on, it's part of the big plan by the powers that be. So much pressure & stress on people nowadays, no more communal societies that people felt they belonged to. The amount of homicides & suicides has risen greatly since 2000. Van life though hard as it is at least gives people some sense of freedom & control over their lives.

    I live in a flat in central London that costs me a fortune each month, currently converting a van at the minute as I’ve lived out of one whilst in Oz. These people are wealthier than some others as they have a community spirit, in London you barely know who your neighbours are and pay a fortune for it. Community and freedom is what life is all about, just a shame the old scroungers in the sheltered housing don’t see it the same way

      @@willpolrthere are places (like Bristol) where many vandwellers don't move but in most places vandwellers move at least monthly & usually daily.
      For most vandwellers finding water & toilets is difficult &, for some, once they've found them are reluctant to stray from them. A network of aires is one solution to this.
      I lived in Bristol for a while & found no water other than bottled water from supermarkets, toilets were locked at night & had no facility for emptying a tank.

    • @willpolr
      @willpolr Před měsícem

      @@alanhat5252 have you measured how often they move then? No you haven’t. A lot of vans move for the day and return to the same spot at night. Finding toilets is difficult? Have you heard of supermarkets and petrol stations? It’s not even vaguely difficult. Finding water is actually easy if you use your brain. At a push you can also get water from a supermarket. And don’t say it’s expensive, that’s nothing to do with it.
      Why should you have facilities for emptying your tanks? You’re not on a campsite. Honestly I think a lot of van dwellers are entitled AF. Why should anyone provide facilities for vans if the vans aren’t paying? You can’t have it all.

      its a decent simple documentary showing just 3 peoples lives in a short time so maybe a bit unfair to diss it mate. but yeah i found it crazy to be going to waitrose and living in a van saving up thousands. slightly different class of people to me i think. ive never had much money ever and from a poor family so ive always wanted a van or truck conversion but cant even afford that. hopefully one day i can have that dream and hopefully i dream of finding a nice community of people in a sunnier place and try and make a living indipendantly somehow. all the best in your future

      Labour have sorted it out a couple of times but they're not currently in the mood, Conservatives caused the current mess, the next 2 biggest parties are the LibDems & Greens.

      completely agree. i’m a born and bred bristolian and want nothing more than to live in the city where I grew up and to be around family but the cost of living in the city has skyrocketed for the exact reasons you mentioned above. one of my options is to renovate and live in a van. it’s made worse by all the students coming here and staying after university. the council should prioritise the needs of Bristolians. i’m sure there are many bristolians who are living in vans, not because they want to, but because it is the only way to stay in the city that they love. The rest are just cultural vipers who have turned the city into a woke, artistic shithole.
