F-16C Fighting Falcon, F-15E Strike Eagle, and F-15B Eagle fighter jets perform an afterburner run.
An afterburner run is performed when the engine is replaced. Before taking the aircraft into the air, the afterburners should be tested to ensure that they function properly.

Love both aircraft but I’m partial to my favorite, the F-15 Eagle, and it’s engine exhaust nozzles (aka turkey feathers) when they contract and then expand for the afterburners.

The F15-E is one mighty sounding plane. I live in the UK near a US Airbase and I frequently hear F-15's flying over. You will hear them very clearly even when they are 15 miles away - its like a thundering!

The F-15's "turkey feathers" were deleted long ago. What mechanics call "turkey feathers" are the external plates covering the linkages, which you can see the F-15 does not have. The B-1 used to have them too but they were deleted as well. The actual segments of the exhaust nozzle are called flaps (the parts connected to the large links) and seals (the ones in between the flaps).

The most awesome AB I ever heard was on the old F-8 Crusader. It didn’t kick in gradually but sounded like a bomb going off when it kicked in. It was a trip on the aircraft carriers hearing multiple launches one after another. That afterburning J57 was a beast.

While stations at Kunsan AFB Korea, the trim pad was close to the South Korean army unit who maned a couple of radar guided 20mm Gatling guns. We used to let them ride in the back seat during run-ups and they would let us spin around on the 20mm Vulcan. Also while I was stationed on Okinawa at Kadena ABF, we used to watch Habu(SR-71) do night take-offs, Bestest Afterburner ever!

They chained them down, went full burner until they got down to the correct fuel level then the chains were blown off (explosive bolts). My grandfather flew the steak eagle, he said they accelerated so fast they started pulling back on the stick to rotate for takeoff as soon as they saw the airspeed indicator needle start to move! They were airborne in like 400ft.

I will tell you however, the J52 engine used in the A-4 Skyhawk and A-6 Intruder is a horrifically loud engine too and it doesn't even have an afterburner. I mean it puts out a brutally ear shattering frequency. The J52 is a very old motor from the 50's, a pure turbojet. The F414 is much more modern and operates at a very high compression ratio, which tends to translate into higher noise levels in full afterburner. Ever since I was a kid I've loved the F16. It will always be my favorite jet. Nothing screams liberty and freedom like a fighter jet. Maybe the sound of a screaming eagle. But still!

I worked on F-16’s for over 17 years. I can assure you that no other jet has showed up to a conflict, knocked on the door, told the other side: “ I’m here to fuck things up,” and then proceed to do so.

@D … You mean that case involving Ben Roberts-Smith, the Victorian Cross recipient & his alleged crimes in the Middle East??? I know what you mean & you’re right about one thing in particular & it also gives me the shits when America drags us into fights we have nothing to do with & I’m pissed off that our “leaders” don’t let our forces stand up for themselves rather than sucking up to the US. I’m also a keen aviation buff but thought the timing of this video release for the Memorial Day holiday in the US was rather coincidental.

Microphones and speakers simply cannot communicate how loud this is. Once the afterburners light, that low pitched rumble is so loud that it shakes the ground you’re standing on. Even with earplugs, your ears still ring afterwards, because the sound is conducted through your body.
