johnny flappie you have to understand that with games being so complex now a days, you can’t just pump out a game as vast as gta4 or 5 every year. gta5 took around 5 years to make. these take time

TBOGT felt very "now" at the time. The financial crisis as the backdrop, with club culture in full swing and about to morph into EDM era. Most of all the glittery feel and the characters were more like the GTA I'd hoped IV would be. And Lost and Damned was a great dive into a completely different culture altogether. All making the same city FEEL very different, because of their lifestyles and stories. IV and its expansions were incredibly satisfying a complete package. Without them, I'd have enjoyed IV just okay. I consider them all part of the same overall narrative because they're interwoven.

I think Luis was cooler than Franklin. He never complained about anything. Franklin is a good character in another way.

I like GTA 4 over GTA 5. Especially this dlc. City has more soul, I love the driving physics, police chases and shootouts are A LOT better, the ragdoll is better, hand to hand combat is better

But i like melee/hand to hand combat and "driving-on-ice" car physics.

Ertan Soner Worst police is in GTA III (it even has the "teleporter" cops). And you dont have to be rude for one comment.
Ertan Soner you meant about those details when police will save their fallen members or when they use pistol if primary weapon is lost/droped. GTA IV police has the most effort put into making them realistic as possible. But as you said, every police is aggressive. Funniest police logics are present in GTA SA and VCS. IV has "realisticly-appealing" as for Mafia II (even if it is mostly broken NPC logic in Mafia II), but so many tiny details are what i love about video games. I miss VC cops when they just stand behind fence, doing nothing :-D

Gta 4 : ballad of gay tony was to me the best gta game made. I know it’s a dlc, but something about it strikes the perfect balance between the gritty ness of gta 4 and the weird and parody of gta 5

one of my most beloved and cherished DLCs of all time. everything about it was so like GTA, even though it took a slightly different approach, with all the clubbing and partying kinda vibe. one of my favorite DLCs of all time.

I can't understand, why Rockstar didn't release this 3 games in remastered versions for the new consoles...
Was it THAT surprising they pulled back from San Andreas' level of customisation? All of those clothes, hairstyles and safehouses were a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to render on the PS2. Also, all of the optional safehouses in SA use one of four default interiors. The save point is useful, but they couldn't do that on the PS3/360 without looking cheap.
Not to mention Rockstar North tried to make the game the game as realistic as possible, other than the lack of safehouses, the 3 protagonists of GTA IV only wear cold weather clothing, no shorts or T shirts which suits the game setting
But they did with gta 5

I've always thought of TBoGT taking place in the spring of 2009. It makes sense since in IV starts in the fall of 2008 and TBoGT begins after a good chunk of its story passed, the weather seems better and there are new cars that are nowhere to be found in the early game.

Tbogt takes place slap bang in the middle of gta 4 since it starts just after the bank heist, just more colourful cause miserable Niko vision wouldnt fit Luis

Mediocre game
To anyone still playing this game: you can use all vehicle save spaces outside all safe house from any of the 3 titles regardless of which one your playing or which safe houses are available!! It’s the best glitch as it allows you save something like 10-12 vehicles round the map on!
Ballad of Gay Tony is one of my favourite games from the series! Lovely characters, great soundtracks and fun storyline.
I love the 4 era. It has the best story imo.
Also I've played the episodes a tonne of times and didn't know there was air hockey!

For years I swore I remembered playing at a golf course in GTA IV, but with no luck being able to find it. Thank you for finally shedding some light on this mystery.
My favorite GTA instalment of all time. TBoGT had absolutely everything. I remember how enamored I was with IV, and how much I anticipated the release of TLAD. Sadly, it did let me down a little, mainly because it felt like an even drearier and grudgier spin-off on IV, although I still enjoyed every second of the game and the immaculately well-written story. However, when news broke about a second expansion pack, that promised to offer a flashier and more vibrant rendition of life in Liberty City, I almost pooped my pants. TBOGT took the best ingredients from IV while implementing a believable storyline set within a glitzy, grand narrative akin to San Andreas. In the end, Rockstar took the best from both worlds and delivered a fucking masterpiece.
Another problem with this game is how useless money is. The missions pay so much and the guns are so cheap to buy.
Really missed an opportunity to Luis take over night clubs throughout the city.
Hmmm! Wouldn't have mind taking over the club where you dance with that girl and end up killing her boyfriend and his security detail.

I just recently realised Franklin can get on a Vinewood tour bus in GTA V. Dunno how I missed it all these years. Was nice hearing about the history and the crazy celebrity stories.
@@GlennDavey sorry for a late reply, just saw this, was cool seeing that as well, seems like I had the same tour, I don't know if they had more or not but was a nice detail as well.
in some way this idea from Stories of Liberty City of having 3 protagonists is what ended up being the main idea for GTAV. Also the golf, the activies, parachuting, and the phone all 100% came from that DLC.
When I went through hard times, this game had been the best therapy for me. Very relaxing. By the way perfect review, as always.

One thing though; you should've brung up the music stations and genres when comparing the three games. I always found it intresting that TLaD for example had more emphasis on rock/metal, as TBoGT had electronic and IV had depressing and melancholy-ish music as well as stations like Vladivostock.

TheCraziestGamer Sad to hear that. Good thing I bought MC3 on the PSN a long time ago. Not 2 though, but that isn't as much of a problem seeing as it is on PC, and available on Steam for very cheap.

Currently playing through BoGT for the first time. Played LaD 3 years ago and never got around to BoGT. So far I like it, but damn I don’t think anything can compare to the basic GTA IV story. So fucking good.
What about the online, though? All the games had online and they had their own exclusive modes. Also, some of them filled up SOME (lots of areas are still left out) of the gaps of the story.
Anyway, I completely agree with your review. Great work on the videos!

10:53 Luis does not run faster. Every of the 3 characters running at the same speed, only the animations looks diffrent
Luis actually is a bit faster and has greater endurance to an extent

Liberty city felt lived in. I felt like I was living in NY when I was a kid. Story was great, amazing soundtrack, and super cool cars.
I feel like crying.
Luis is basically a modern retelling of the CJ story, but I love it anyway.

The Ballad of Gay Tony is utterly brilliant. I loved the dark tone of the main story, TLAD made me feel badass (despite the bland story), but oh my God Gay Tony is what I love GTA for :)
I especially love the Yussuf missions :)

I used to love playing TBOGT online with friends. Parachuting, causing havoc in the APC tank, hauling ass in the police stinger, flying the buzzard helicopter, good times.

Half Life 1 actually takes a similar aproach, Opposing Force (PC exclusive single player DLC, adding a lot of new content, new NPCs, new guns, new mechanics, etc...), Blue Shift (dito, except that instea of adding, it actually recenters to the core gameplay of Half Life, puting you through more varied scenario, with a less varied roaster of NPCs an a more restricted weapon selection, some hate it because of that, for others it's a reason to apreciate it) and Decay (PS2 exclusive coop campaign, it's on the disc from the get go, just grab a second cotroller and invite a friend) all take place at the same time, but unlike GTA 4 where all the characters crossover and their stories are relevent to one another an tell the greater story of the city, Half Life games are linear FPS games instea of open world, so they paint you a bigger picture of what was exactly going in black mesa, by having people each character live their stand alone stories in separate places of the Black Mesa facility, only seeing clues of the other protaonists, hearing about them a few times, or the rare sightings of each other, wich are like the GMan sightings, you gotta look for them an they're easy to miss, except they're extreemly rare unlike the GMan sightings.
Yeah. I have always loved the idea of adding singleplayer DLC which adds new charecters. Was a big fan of the half life series. Now i’m more of a gta guy.

Man, I replayed all the GTA's starting from GTA III (skipped VCS and LCS) and while I had always thought the radio in Vice City and San Andreas was the best, I reached this game and found Vladivostok FUCKING FM. What a god damn amazing radio station in the DLC GTA IV games. Combined with the ambiance and the shinier, brighter Liberty City, it's just such an amazing gaming experience that completely caught me off guard as I already held this game in high regard before.
I never noticed that all three of the stories tied together like that diamond mission
