I hope this crafting system will be better than 2014s. Crafting between adventures and for years of ingame time for a 50% discount is beyond unrewarding. A System describing the average kind of materials or if they can be found for a certain amount in town to finish a recipe gives so many more options to quest for, like a smith gather the materials of lvl 1 adventure to eventually crafting his equipment to fully become a fighter at level 3. Same coulf be done with an Alchemist with Potions or Wizard for crafting a Scroll to infuel to eventually learn the spell. Crafting in 2014 was not a good feature for storytelling.
just have your storyteller use older versions or his/her own, too easy.
I can almost guarantee you that the crafting rules will be “You need proficiency in X tool in order to craft X item, and it takes X GP for materials cost and X amount of time to craft said item”.
"Assuming they have enough time between adventures."
That's what the rule on real time passing in the game world in between sessions is designed to allow.
You are conflating time between sessions and adventures. Time between sessions is not linear to real time. It is based on what was planned to be done between sessions. The time between adventures is. You are not crafting weapons or armor in the 1-2 days you are in town between sessions. You CAN do so between adventures as that could well be weeks or months.
@@SophiaAphrodite no, I'm not. I'm mentioning the almost forgotten TSR era rule.

Can't believe wizards of the Coast isn't participating in kraken week! They're literally " of the coast " do they have no fears of the deep??? /s
If they make it so crafting is just a bunch of gold and too much downtime to care, I won't be surprised
I wiss they will include a recipe system with recipies, masters, materials and tools checks. Maybe in the magical items.
Check out KibblesTasty's crafting rules...been loving them at my table for almost every one of those reasons.
POISONREQUEST: As a infiltrating changeling, I'd often have the opportunity to poison the enemie's food supply. Now the issue is that poison either has instant effects (dmg upon ingestion, so they will instantly notice, probably affecting only one person), or have other instantly noticable effects. I would wish for a potion to either take arround one hour to take effect (so multiple people still eat the poisoned food), or give the poisoned condition without you instantly noticing.
Much love and respect
All the things that people will be able to craft are also just going to be in the phb shop list... Like... oh boy, a map?! Even if it wasn't explicitly spelled out in the books, my cartographer character still made maps, and could still buy maps too
They aren’t just adding maps as a thing you can buy, they’re adding some actual functionality to having a map. Granted, that functionality will probably just be advantage on Survival checks to navigate a location that you have a map for, but it’s at least something.
@@thomasshepherd8909 fair but imagine how funny it would be if it gave you advantage on checks made with navigator's tools
Probably not the only one that is as excited about THIS section in the book set more than many many others... this is hugely important. I like what i hear, though. So far, anyway! So many 3rd party creators have had supplemental systems and its VERY challenging to strike the right balance between "easy and approachable" and "fun/rewarding" while still giving the players interested in crunchy stuff something to at least nibble at without taking over a session. Anyway, excited. Thanks for the effort on this section. Excited to see how it shakes out.
I've been very fond of KibblesTasty's crafting system...does exactly that. Gives you materials/components you can find relatively easily & gives you crafting times that are much better/easier to fit into downtime, def recommend checking them out if you haven't already
I love spell scrolls. I always implemented them in my campaigns. Nothing is more fun then a Barbarian that use a scroll to cast firebolt. My scrolls could be purchased, find in treasures or created by spellcasters. They always need to have a casting of 1 action, it uses the persons who wields the Scroll Concentration, if not specified it cast the spell at the lowest lv and they have limited charges. For example a scroll of firebalt after 2 uses will burn. I also give my players amulets that can use reaction spells, book pages with Cantrips and ritual spells, cards with summons and magical traps that can cast restrained spells like web or entangle. In my campaign a spellcaster can create, write a scroll at lv 1 in 20 hours and at each lv it drops 1 hour. So for example a Lv20 Spellcaster can write a scroll in 1 hour. But I also put a restriction of 1 Scroll/day otherwise at higher levels the Wizard would come at me after each Long Rest with a handfull of new spells.
I also give players cursed or corrupted scrolls that they have a chance to misfire. For example a cursed fireball spell can deal 8D6 dmg but has Aldo a chance to burn the user for half Dmg. Or a polimorph scroll that yes cast polimorph but has also the chance to polimorph the user into a Frog for 1 hour
Sadly, none of this is in the official rules.
Huh, in the rules in xanathars crafting a 1st level scroll takes only 8 hours. Still though that better be enough to make a living otherwise a wizard wouldn't be able to afford the scrolls their class depends on.
@@TechnicalTactician I made it this way to give some sense of progression. And it also make sense for a higher lv Wizard to make scrolls faster and for higher LV spells.
@@ratiuvictor9533 yeah, I am playing a gestalt campaign as a wizard and an artificer, so I am going to get fast at crafting scrolls already, but I do agree with you there, finding extra rewards in the game that are not just the ones written down in the book is always a fun thing. Like looking at the magic item named Arcane Grimmoir, it contains no spells, but if it had a previous owner, who could only really be a wizard, it would make sense that they wrote some spells in it. It would be illogical otherwise. Dnd is about discovery and fun. And I am glad you are putting in that element for your players. (Also not to mention that wizards get there only non subclass features at level one, then at level 18.)
All of the clarifications in the books are great...but he kinda ended the video on the sorest part of crafting in 5e: "assuming they have enough time between adventures to actually spend on crafting". As they are right now, if your DM doesn't give you *extensive* downtime, you just cannot engage with crafting in any useful way beyond basic tier 1 adventuring gear.
Anyone curious about alternative rules: I really enjoyed witch+craft. It’s a supplement that has that Ghibli magic in the crafting.
In our 3.5 game, gems are like magic batteries. So whenever we make magic items, we need certain gem types and sizes for particular items. Hope there’s something like that in this.

Pretty sure this is just a clip from the first video about the PHB. It is very familiar.
No, this is new information. I've been following very carefully and looking for information on crafting.
I really hope that they deliver on the equipment descriptions. Previously, things like carriages, horse equipment, and other things had no guidance other than the plain language, and to look at the real world counterpart.
why do they need guidance don't you have an imagination? Want a carriage? modify horse stats and add a huge carrying capacity. Horse armor? Ask your DM if you can bump the AC.
It's a table top game not a video game
I don't understand why more guidance on carriages and horse equipment would be necessary
@@talscorner3696 Well, quite simply, how much faster is a carriage than walking? You wouldn't expect it to be as fast as a horse at full gallop. Does a wagon drawn by one-horse move at the same speed and carry the same materials as a wagon pulled by six horses?
If I am riding bareback without any changes in how riding works, what is the point of buying a saddle, bit and bridle? Do the current mounted combat rules assume I have all of that, and therefor I should institute penalties for not having it, or does it assume I don't have it, and I should give bonuses for having it?
I guess you could argue that none of this is "necessary" but it would sure be greatly appreciated.

It kind of feels like they're setting up for the Artificer to finally join the other classes in the PHB, but that might just be getting my hopes up.
Sadly, will never happen. 12 classes structured around 4 broad archetypes is a nice round number to market around, and too many players out there get itchy about tech in their games.
@@stephenklien the people that think the "tech" is not fitting in their game are people without fantasy enought to imagine them in other way than mechas and railguns makers. medieval european tech historically is more advanced than people think plus the chinese already discovered gunpowder and made fireworks and wachas(ancient katiusha lounchers) to use in wars. plus who those people think make all the magic objects and structures are made by? wizards? i realy want to see a wizard forgeing a magical sword with 10 to 12 in constitution.
I’d like to see some I built rules or guides for using magic components in crafting. Want to build a cool flaming sword, you’ll need a scale from a fire type dragon, adult or above for that.
Check out KibblesTasty's crafting rules...been loving them at my table for pretty much this
I am not sure why crafting rules are not all in the Dungeon Master’s Guide? Oh, yes I do, players want it in the Player's Handbook. Some good changes.
I feel like if and when they reintroduce the Artificer, they should have
Tool Savant: You can use your intelligence to use any tool with which you have proficiency instead of the normal attribute.
Can't wait to craft a +3 All-Purpose Tool
I really hope crafting isn't limited to just downtime. It should be possible to make some items while traveling. Otherwise, this sounds like they just spelled things out better than before. It seems like the same system with very little actual changes?.
As a forever DM I get why crafting rules aren't strongly formed. I run for a table of 8 and normally only one player expresses any interest in crafting. Its hard to introduce rules or game mechanics for only one player's benefit. I feel bad for them but if the other players aren't interested its hard to justify the exepditiure of time and energy
Well lets say your table is average. WotC estimates 13.7 million people play DnD. 13.7 million divided by 8 is 1.71 million people interested in crafting rules.
One of the biggest chapters in the entire book is dedicated to a suite of rules and character options that only a smaller subset of classes can use, called *SPELLCASTING*
@@AnaseSkyrider8 of the 12 classes in DnD have the Spellcasting feature. Only Barbarians, Fighters, Monks, and Rogues don’t natively gain access to spells, but each of these classes can gain access to spells through either Subclasses, Species, Backgrounds, Feats, or Magic Items. 90% of DnD characters can cast at least one spell, so I wouldn’t say only a “Smaller subset of classes” use the rules on Spellcasting.
@@thomasshepherd8909 Not only is it a smaller subset, but it's a smaller subset which are also among some of the most popular classes in the game.
I didn't call it a small subset. It is literally less than the total set. A smaller subset, if you will.
Check out KibblesTasty's crafting rules...been loving them at my table. They're simple but expansive & easy to just toss in materials/components for that player to play around with either in downtime or slowly during travel/long resting & the others might be interested if it was something that wouldn't take yrs of in-game downtime to utilize & was easier
That last thought is worrisome "Assuming they have enough time to craft in between adventures" why wouldn't you. There was a complete cleric subclass focused around forging and it takes a decade to make a wooden spoon given old crafting rules

Herbalism tools? Roll nature, you will make a new potion in 12 hours, but you must be there to attend it.
If players will be able to have expertise in tools (iirc, they were quietly moving away from that in OneD&D), at least you'll be rewarded for high modifiers and extra bonuses.
Like legit, crafting just needed something vaguely reasonable:
- A target based on the item's value (and rarity if it's magical).
- You only need half the value in supplies.
- The rest is just time (and how much).
- A DC to roll against to reduce the time, maybe the cost too.
- ^ If not that last one, then at least a reason to have expertise in the tool.

There is an economy in any DnD campaign. Wotc needs to stop ignoring that ANY crafted item has a market for sale or trade. Those items need to have monetary value or bartering value. Without that guidance, we have to rely on 3rd party evaluations which vary considerably.
The game is called dungeons and dragons, not merchants and businesses.
Economies that trade LITERALLY are 3rd party evaluations that vary considerably.

I've been trying to make my own but it's a daunting task...came across KibblesTasty's crafting system & have been loving it
I know they were just pushing out easy content while they are on vacation this week, but this lacked any significant details about new crafting possibilities and processes. This was half-assed.
Well, I mean, as opposed to classes where we already know how they work from base 5e, they don't have to explain the entire concept of how leveling up works in each class video.
This is a whole new system. They aren't going to just read out the entire crafting chapter in the new PHB in a preview CZcams video.
I understand that disappointment in the video, because we still don't really know how it works, but to me, we still don't know how it works, and there is nothing in here that tells me it's going to be bad.

They're really interesting.
They think they suffer , and get made fun of more than other dragons. When in reality they have it no harder than any other dragon.
This is kind of unrelated, but I hope that heroes start the game with the lowest tier of armor in their armor class. Otherwise, padded armor, hide armor, and ring mail will never see play, and there's one less thing for them to start saving up for when they first start playing.
So we get THE most needed Artificer rules while Artificer itself isn't in the book? :D

Is it September yet?
JUST CALL IT 5.5
Honestly it seems more like 5.1 then 5.5, a lot of the stuff seems to be a compilation of multiple books into one making Xan & Tash obsolete and then adding a few things. Feels more like what they did with Tyranny of Dragons where they combined 2 existing books into one and add just enough new stuff to say it was different. Maybe I am wrong, but best case it is like Phandelver, where they took old stuff added new stuff and called the whole thing new. (Avoiding Rant about how there should have been way more new stuff because the first 3 chapters are just a reprint}
Don't care what WotC says, its 5.5e

03:45 So, Cartographers tools... does that mean characters have got to get out into the world with theodolites, various measures, chalk, and little notebooks to take readings before going indoors to use their quills, ink, parchment, a pair of compasses, calipers, and a ruler? That could be a whole campaign in itself!
I mean, that is how cartography works... so it would make sense lol
Be a good introductory set of games, escort cartographers as they measure and set a (hostile?) border.
obviously it only needs to be as detailed as players decide. Also, you can just buy a premade map.
The maps seem to be already made. I believe cartographers tools are more about using maps than drawing one.
