- OMORI started off as a very different kind of game during the earlier part of it's development lifecycle.
Faithfully recreating a title that is a living version of OMORIs earliest screenshots and assets was likely the mission statement behind the OMORIBOY mod for OMORI, a fan project that- while unfinished, does show promise. Going through it was kind of surreal... there's moments in this thing that are tonally at odds with what should usually go in an OMORI styled story that make me ask... a lot of questions.

The old art style is charming in it's own way
I should mention that Omoriboy isn’t a “faithful” recreation of what could’ve been, it was supposed to be a love letter to the beta content and is meant to be a combination of all the versions of Omori.
Also hehe I drew the Cheers shop sprite at 0:32, unfortunately the lead artist kind of butchered the whole thing compared to my draft version I made.
Basically when I drew the sprite, the lead artist didn’t liked how I drew the proportions due to it looking too cartoony, so instead of asking me to redrew they instead stretched out the proportions heavily and moved stuff around.
They also changed the eyes too.
Slightly annoyed at how much they changed it but eh it’s okay.
They later asked me to redraw it again due to finding an earlier sprite of cheers with a different look, but I was busy at the time and I later left the team due to some stuff.
I might post the draft version later.

I thought this video was going to talk about the actual demo that came out a few years before the game did lol. I haven’t seen anyone mention it much, but it’s interesting how many changes were made between the demo and the official game.

I don't think the fact people may play this mod already knowing the twist is necessarily a problem. I played the OG game having the twist spoiled and still had a blast seeing all the foreshadowing and trying to make sense of the things that I hadn't being spoiled (mainly what SOMETHING meant). I believe with good writting any Omori mod can still make the twist great
Honestly I'm interested to see the direction this game goes in, given that the twist of the game... is pretty much just revealed.

I'm so surprised to see memories of the demo version like this! I waited in line for 4 hours in 2017 to play the demo, and I remember being deeply disappointed and thinking that the game was nothing I imagined and never would be. When I played it at release, I was SHOCKED to see how much it had changed and improved! And it felt like no one else knew how it used to be. It went beyond all of my expectations.

I think the storybook part will either work very well or fall victim to the criticisms you said in the video, depending on the actual story. It's possible that Mari (or Mary as she was known) was originally meant to actually have committed suicide in the early drafts, and this was later changed. If they keep this aspect of the story in the mod the storybook may serve as something to mislead the player, and play off their expectations of what happened in the final game, before the reveal that Mary actually did take her own life, and Sunny/Omori's guilt stems from feeling like he may have caused it in some way. Personally I hope they go that route because it would be a really cool reversal on how the original game misleads you and would subvert players' expectations when it comes to mods.

I would be astounded if this mod actually went for the same plot as the base game. The storybook being setup this early means its almost certainly going to be subverted, it wouldn't make sense for it not to be as a piece of Omori fanwork. There's a video on the mod's official channel where Hero is leaving a message to Mary on the phone (obviously linking back to the one in the game) where he seems distressed and apologetic, and says he's "been a bad boyfriend and a worse friend" and that she just wanted him "to be better." There's also a real website you can access from the game called "takoboutit" which is Mary's blog. It's home to miscellaneous art, and various things involving an ARG. It's really cool! One of the hidden things on that site, though, is a conversation between Mary and Hero where she pressures him to continue sneaking out of his house at night, despite him being very clearly uncomfortable with it (I'm sure you can read between the lines). There's alot of very aggressive messages towards Sunny about the recital, too, so most likely Mary is going to differ from Mari in that she's abusive, or atleast harbors abusive tendencies. I'm sure that's not all of it, but there's absolutely more here than meets the eye! Nice video as always
MARY! That's how MARI's name was spelled until we got OMORI's first demo in 2018, and the DOROTHI enemy in the 2017 trailer ended with a Y... I'd imagine the ghost seen in the 2014 trailer was MARY's, too, including the very few frames of a girl against a black background.
In fact, there was also an enemy called "MARYONETTE" that didn't end up in the final game. I might be misremembering it, but MARY was another friend of SUNNY's instead of his sister.
I was confused when you were explaining the background of this mod. It's some Medieval type story, but then I hear the very old white space theme and the old white space and I strangely understood the new backstory all together for some reason

Holy I just came across this video.
Hey folks, it's been three weeks but in case some of y'all are lurking in the comments, I'm the ex-creator of this mod. This is a mod that served as a love letter for beta omori. Me and my friends scrounged up every ounce of beta content we could to recreate or reshape it into something of our own.
One of the biggest peeves I had with OMORI was it's cleanliness. If you take a look at the old trailer, it is filled with so much roughness. Realistic hands, cakes, a more surreal, trippy, and ROUGH artstyle, etc. That's kind of what I wanted to recreate in this mod. It's not "clean" like I consider the new game to be, especially in regards to the art and the story.
As this mod is still technically in development by my friend, I won't reveal any of the story here but let's just say the story isn't quite as copy pasted from OMORI as the storybook may lead you to think :). It's a story I'm proud of making and I'm very proud of everyone's support for the mod, despite how rushed it may be at points.
The new head is focusing on refining a lot of the more "rough" parts of the mod, such as the character portraits, excess bugs, and general jank, so I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if the full mod ever comes out. Maybe I'll come back to update the website occasionally? Who knows!

The storybook motif in particular was fun to talk about and make edits for in the video.

One thing I realized as an artist is the value of throwing away all your progress and starting over. If I could go back in time and teach something to myself it would be that, no work is truly ever finished and no first draft is ever right, having to start over isn't a curse it's a gift because once it's out there that's it you don't get to fix and change things anymore
