In part one we dove into the sometimes notorious history of public domain VHS distributors and their history releasing public domain cartoons on video tape. It's both disturbing and quirky at the same time. We left off with a bit of a cliffhanger in that episode that we will pick up with here in part two.
In this episode I add a little more of a personal touch as I look back on the public domain VHS tapes I had as a kid as well as the later DVD releases of such cartoons that I currently own today (and the oddities of them as well). With all this I set you up for the final conclusion where I get a little hands on with everything. I'd tell you exactly how it ends, but that would spoil the surprise!

...and the moral of the story is.... These tapes were essentially "legal" bootlegs!

Ah memories of going to rummage sales and auctions! I remember coming home with a couple of VHS treasures and being excited to watch them that night! Netflix and chill just isn't the same. It's the excitement of the hunt, haggle and have that's lost. It's the difference between popcorn and CrackerJack's. You never know what you're going to get with Cracker Jack's and that's what makes it special.

I know exactly what you mean. Some people look at me and ask. Why don't you just buy this stuff online? Simple I been able to find rare stuff sometimes or just obscure and forgotten things for a cheaper price out at local stores. Specially thrift stores and Antique shops.

I freaking LOVE Mill Creek DVDs. I'm a big fan of cheesy old B movies and I have at least half a dozen of the 50 movie sets that they put out. I'll probably never finish watching all of them, but when I'm in the mood for a double feature I can always pull those sets off the shelf.

I used to love buying the Mill Creek DVDs in the store when they had the 50 movie sets and the others like "12 Creature Features" that you could get in the $5 bin. Now the bin is just a million copies of the same handful of movies, mostly released in the last 10 years.

Public Domain VHS tapes has one good thing going for them
It exposes films and animation from days gone by to a new generation (albeit in a seedy quality)
Nevermind the fact that only 4 of the 3 Stooges shorts are in PD (3 with Shemp and 1 with Curly), 1 PD Woody Woodpecker cartoon (Pantry Panic) and some of the PD Looney Tunes happen to be from (at times, if lucky) the Censored 11

Lots of awesome things are Public Domain:
      Night of the Living Dead
      Fleischer Superman
Dusty's Trail (aka Gilligan in The Old West)
      Metropolis (as of yesterday)
      Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!
Even a handful of Cliffhanger Film Serials
And that's just to name several examples of awesome Public Domain Content

That “Popeye” VHS tape from UAV is bad, really bad. If you want a better way transplant this tape to another, take a donor VHS tape like one of those porno VHS that everyone hates it, take it apart, remove the tape from the reel, take one of the retainers from the reel, put a new tape and attach the retainer to the reel, fast forward all the way to the end, remove the retainer, put the same one as I mentioned before, put it back together, rewind the tape, and press play to see how it works, and you get a better picture.

45:20 Someone at the duplication center needed to check the chroma circuit on their duplicator deck. Your Sony V.C.R. is quite modern compared to my "everyday" rig. I have a 1986 Sharp VC-6846U, a 1987 Panasonic PV-4750 and a 1988 Sansui SVR-500U. All of which I have serviced. The chroma fault in the video reminds me of an issue I am experiencing with my 1983 Panasonic PV-1220. The capacitors in the color/chroma circuit need to be replaced.

I enjoyed this 2-part documentary! A subject I'm hugely interested in. It's very hard to find any info on these companies, but it's interesting to see how they...turned into other companies! I just read the other day that the entire library of the famous GoodTimes Video was bought by a company that today primarily makes Yoga equipment.

40:00 If I transferred these cassettes, I would have the hood off of the V.C.R. I would give the heads and transport a clean every time one of those dodgy tapes would pass the assembly. You are probably getting oxide all over your transport. Oh yeah, auto-tracking...I would recommend you using a really primitive deck (such as a Panasonic PV-1220) with more substantial heads and transport. It seems like those really old decks do a better job at keeping stable while playing damaged/cheap cassettes.

Growing up in the 2000s I had 2 public tapes, both from “First Video Group” first one was called “Three Little Pigs” and had Pigs In A Polka, Notes To You and Have You Got Any Castles. Second was a Casper tape which had 2 Casper cartoons as well as Jungle Jitters, once my grandmother saw Jungle Jitters these tapes were essentially hidden away until I decided to dig them out a few days ago
Ended up ordering the Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and Heckle and Jeckle tapes for my Looney Tunes collection. Couldn’t find the Robin Hood Makes Good, Woody Woodpecker or the Porky tape unfortunately

@@diazbrothersyoutube The funny thing with Disney is that even though they are massive copyright bullies, when their stuff is actually in the public domain they tend to leave it alone. Warner Bros. are far worse when it comes to making copyright claims over their public domain releases - they were the bane of my existence when I had a channel sharing this stuff.

Your at a good youthful age when crying isnt much a thing very ofter to most people. But someday you may loose the love of your life and your gonna cry for at least 3 days like youve never cried before. Happen to me last Winter when the women I was making forever plans with died last February. Anyway, i apprrciate your videos on this supject matter. My mom would let me pick out something on Goodtimes and Video Treasures everytime we went to Target or Walmart back in the 80s. I would continue to find myself in Walmart on a weekend night in the 90s digging up copies of films like Empire of the Ants for 5 bucks. Now these films can be easily found on youtube or Dailymotion for free in their entirety if you locate the correct uploads. But back then, those movies almost never showed on television unless you caught them at just the right time on a channel like WGN or USA (I cant exactely remember?) And it was usually after midnight since they had much other classics like TX Chainsaw Massacre to show closer to primetime. Indeed, the first time I saw Chainsaw was on TBS or one of those stations in the Dallas Ft Worth metroplex around 7pm. I didnt have cable in my room but it was a huge city (even bigger now) and those rabbit ears could pick up over 30 stations easily; although the picture could be very snowy but we were use to that back then. I believe thats why we were so forgiving to the bad quality of these PD releases. Believe it or not, I didnt notice the fuzzy spundtrack (on the Edward G Robinson movie, The Red House) but I just chalked it up to being a 40 year old film (at the time) and enjoyed it all the same. Anyway, great work. Just giving my perspective from an old fart who was buying them back then

I was a young adult when VHS/VCRs hit. I had a sizable collection of tapes but never got any PD cartoons (I had a few PD movies though). However, in my fascination of PD stuff I did pick up the 600 Cartoon set on 512 discs to go with my other multi-disc PD discs (lovingly referred to as my Grindhouse Collection). All hail Mill Creek!

  • @mikehawk4388

What year was that tape with the random cartoon "inserted" manufactured in? Because the cartoon looks an awful lot like Jen and the Holograms--specifically, (according to the internet,) the "Intrigue at the Indy 500" episode. It 1st aired on February 1, 1987.
That might give a better timetable for if it was on the tape before or after Catroons R Fun sharted these toons onto it, haha.
Your channel is like a treasure hunt full of the somewhat obscure content I love. Underrated as hell! I'm glad your newest video on the vhs topic was recommended because it's gonna be a treat to be looking through all the obscure history, forgotten crime, & documentaries you've got.

*PERHAPS "UAV" ORIGINALLY PRINTED ALL OF THOSE BACK IN 1987, AND JUST STUCK THOSE STICKER-LABLES ON THE RE-DONE 1989 VERSION! (and not to mention, they never bothered doing the "Daffy Duck" tape until 1989.)*

*AND AS FOR PUBLIC-DOMAIN TAPES THAT CONTAIN 50 CARTOONS ON THEM~ ALL THEY NEED TO DO IS RELEASE EVERY SINGLE "HAPPY HARMONIES" CARTOON ON TAPE - {total: 37 cartoons} [1934-1938] THEN RELEASE EVERY SINGLE "TOM AND JERRY" CARTOON THAT WAS EVER CHURNED-OUT IN THE CZECH-REPUBLIC - {total: 13 cartoons} [1960-1962] AND BINGO, YOU HAVE 50 CARTOONS ON A TAPE! (but the only problem is none of those T&J cartoons are in the public-domain, and the only HH cartoon that's in the public-domain is "To Spring".) [1936]*
