Hey everyone! Just an extra little side project here while I'm busy working on some longer, more time consuming projects. A chance to put something out while thanking you all for my channel's more recent success.
In this video I discuss a place that has fascinated me since I was old enough to collect and keep memories. Every time my parents drove by it I had to stare in awe, and I got angry if I missed the chance to view it. And what's so interesting is that the place is hardly remarkable and yet it's captured the attention of many in the Portland area. There's lots of possible reasons for that and everyone has their own reason but I get the feeling it's garnered so much attention for more than one reason but rather a collection of them.
And I found a little history about the place, granted there isn't a whole lot out there so it is left to some mystery. While discussing this location and its little bit of history I also paid the place a visit (at least the best I could).
Enjoy!

Once again to my viewers: thanks for your patience as I've been getting my computer situation taken care of. With the gradual demolition of the site currently taking place I wanted to revive this exploration we did as well as telling ...

I'd be interested to know more about this weird building along the highway 30 outside of portland, you can find people asking about it easily by googling "strange building portland highway 30 old abandoned" It is probably the most bizarre building I have ever seen.
You fill a desperately needed historical niche that you would think should be heavily funded and sought after by the state (or historical organizations). Portland is a top-20 city in a heavily populated state. There is so much history lost, barely documented, or completely undocumented and it often feels like we have far less of our cultural and geographical history maintained/retained in this city/state than most other states.
You should generally be okay adventuring through abandoned places, as long as you aren't carrying a weapon and you aren't doing any damage to get into the place and you aren't either doing damage/vandalism to the place nor taking anything with you. It doesn't hurt to have a "cover", too. Just say you were walking your dog and he got off the leash and you thought he went into this area/building/whatever. Have a picture of a dog//your dog in your wallet that you can show, to sell the story. Personally, I would not do such things . . . *alone* . . . but other than that, i think you're generally okay (though I know you've had at least one experience to the contrary).
I completely forgot they made a new one.
You need a drone. Even a DJI Pro 3 would create some incredible footage. Love your channel. Thank you for this video.
I appreciate your work and history on the city man!! I worked at Gordon’s fireplace shop for 5 years back from 09’-13’ - so sad to see its current state all abandoned and tagged up 😭 as a local native born and raised in PDX I look forward to your videos!! Keep it up man! 👍🏽
I saw an urban explorer go in there years ago..Michael Anderson it was a giant storage area for like RVs and boats ect when he sneaked in...big big inside 2 levels
Love your work🌹Awesome, as always 👍
I always remember that building as a kid going along that freeway everyday. The homeless camp you referenced was also an interesting thing to look at driving by.
I lost interest after 10 minutes of hearing you blah blah blah to quote Tom Petty so let’s get to the point…. And I find it funny that every state has lost Spanish, Aztec, or Mexican gold. Colorado has lost Aztec gold. Utah has lost Spanish gold. Nevada has lost Mexican gold. Idaho has lost Mayan gold.
I live right behind there and go up there to smoke all the time
When you go on top of it, there is indeed an alarm sometimes
AN URBEX VIDEO!!!!! YESSSSSSS
Another great video Steve! Keep up the great work :)
In the 1970s it was part of Barker's Furniture. The Ustore it was the main Barker's Furniture plant.
I worked there.
Enjoy watching your videos, fellow portlandian for 2 years and learning the cities history is great! keep up the great videos!!
Steve, I think you are past time to drop "amateur" from your name. You are a historian. This was top notch analysis. And like so many urban "renewal" projects dictated by wealthy old white dudes, this area is now one of, if not the, least vibrant parts of downtown. When I'm down in that area I'm always struck by how dead it is. The false and unproven theories foisted on us by these "leaders" that very tall building with "public squares" that renderings always filled with drawn in people. In real life, they such and people avoid these sterile brutal places. A few fountains, however cool (you did a good job trying to be fair) do not replace a vibrant organic people-friendly area. If I never see another brutal "public square" or cheap-ass mural that is supposed to make up for lives destroyed by "honoring them with a painted wall" I will be happy!
There was a lumber yard there ...The Graff World loves that spot..especially back in day ..the giant Marvin the Martain and RIP BORE were my favs! Great video Steve
I wish I had a better memory of what I saw as a little kid cause we passed it so much but I just gave this general recollection on what it looked like mostly back in the 90s.
I've always wondered about that place as well. I see a newer car 18:05 parked there - security?
Yeah it’s crazy, I swear I’ve never seen anyone there and as I was filming that vehicle pulled in and parked.
I really enjoy what you do, I really enjoy seeing our area through your eyes.👍
Thanks 👍
"Everything looked better back then"? Trust me, it WAS better back then!
I always wondered about this place!
When I was in high school in the late 1970s, we used to go to the Amphi-theater drive-in near Delta Park frequently. A bunch of us would cram into my friend Linda's 1974 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, go to the drive-in and we'd have a lot of fun. I lived in Vancouver and we often went to the two drive-ins that used to be there as well. Those were great times. The last drive-in I went to was the one on Powell, and saw "Jurassic Park" in 1993. I really miss going to the drive-in. I wish they'd come back.
I've known that building for years. From 1960 to 1963 I had a paper route in the neighborhood to north side. Ive crossed the 28th st bridge many a time. That building has always puzzled me. It seemed out of place. Thank you for your videos. Great job.
I'm guessing many of the old structures being torn down are because the seismic retrofitting that would be required for many uses would cost more than new construction - like that great old fire station torn down not long ago where the Green Line exits the bridge into Oldtown in the turn. I wonder if this place has a "U" sign at the unseen front?
what is the purpose of the 'U' sign?
@@mankoslic3"Unsafe" to enter per the city.
Enjoyable video
I know about that building….in the 70’s it was Simpson Lumber. My father in law was the night watchman. They made lumber products. It’s funny it hasn’t been torn down by now. I enjoy your channel. Born and raised in Portland….
That’s so cool, with its placement I could see an interesting thing or two happening working security at that place.
Your videos are so fantastic and informative! The neighborhood you got mugged seems so nice? From a new Oregonian from CG.
At least a few buildings are remaining from the old days that's progress
I was born in coos bay, lived in Cooston and Daniel's Creek, and never ever heard of this.
I'm late to this party, but at 3:01, the picture is from the hill on which my family home rested! It was taken in 1960, after heavy rains caused a landslide onto NW Savier St. Thanks!
Mmmmm.... Hair conditioner.

No, no, it’s just a coincidence they realize you’re their very best friend in the whole world at dinner time 😻
Seems like a lot of murders in a time when the population was small. What is up with that?
I like the old buildings better 😢
And they curiously named the streets after thrmselves.LOL
I am so glad you covered this !! I came across this story a could years ago while reading about him on Wikipedia. Sounds like he was kind of a Sugar Baby at first ;) I love that you went to the places where he stayed!!
Hey Steve - Great educational video 📹. I went across the Sellwood bridge years ago and was terrified 😨 😳. I haven't been on there since the new has been built. Your video gives me hope. Thank you so much 😊.
That individual was a Sasquatch visual.
These murders sounds like the ones described in the book Man on the Train.
I went to Wilson High school class of ‘92 and back then there were a few big Scavenger hunts. Both included that statue. You won automatically if you got one of the flags from the top of the freemont bridge, or a police car. But there were also many other items around town not as iconic. I remember when this happened back then and I assumed it was a scavenger hunt
What if her 1st name was joe her middle name was Anna and her last name was Lopez has anyone thought of that
The Rocky Butte jail *WAS* in existence up until the 1970s, at which point I believe, it was demolished to make way for the I-205 freeway, cutting off Maywood Park from Rocky Butte.

Based on aerial photography, it would look like the Division St. Drive-In theater was built between 1951 and 1952.

So spot on!!! 🤘🏻😉🐒💨
I am inclined to believe the neighborhood has more to do with the failure than on-line shopping. Last time (three years) I was in Portland, Clackamas Town Center was still doing fine.
