Welcome back for a, sooner than expected, new entry in my Sketchy Places series. Following my last piece, delving into the history of the Holm Hotel/Fritz Saloon, I traveled just a couple blocks north to the site where a massive hotel once stood. This was the Grand Central Hotel (later the Hotel American and, ultimately, a site run by the Union Gospel Mission), built a short distance from the city's main train station.
The hotel, primarily the creation of beer man Henry Weinhard, stood from 1892 until 1978 and the Lan Su Chinese Garden stands on that block in Chinatown today. During its time it transitioned from a classy spot for many travelers to flock to (complete with a massive dining space, bar, barber shop and bath house) to just another hotel and ultimately a run down semi-flophouse on the fringe of skid row. But during that time many interesting, and sometimes tragic, things happened there and I bundled up a bunch of them here to tell the more interesting side of the history of this hotel.
I’m genuinely impressed by your ability to find and compile all this information together into a documentary. I only recently discovered your YT channel, but I live in Portland and I often like to watch historical documentaries. I’ve watched several of yours and have learned so many new things I had never heard about. You are so dedicated and passionate about uncovering these mysteries,so your videos are always really interesting. Late at night when I can’t sleep I often look to your channel to find something to watch. Keep up the great work!
I have no TV. Ii watch CZcams. Your work is always my choice as I surf.
Meeee tooo! Can’t afford tv even if I wanted it..that being said, this is much more informative than anything on actual tv😉❤️
7:04 Another thing that contributed to hotel thefts being such an issue back then was that everybody had to travel with cash on them. There were no credit or debit cards, no checks, no travelers checks... just cash. This made any traveler a juicy target for thieves.
I really enjoyed this one Steve, great job! I hope you feel better soon!
So glad you are feeling better
You should do the history on the Columbia Gorge Hotel. I worked in the hotel for two years and it has an amazing storied past with hauntings that I witnessed.
This was so good. A good few chuckles in there too! He MUST have been drunk!
Just found your channel. I dabble in watching old world history videos. You’re vids are pretty good. I’d be interested to see you dig a bit deeper
hey steve I love your content! I also live in portland off powell blvd. I was wondering if you ever studied the possible connection between Portland and the great tartarian empire? Jon Levi has a cool video about old town portland on youtube you might enjoy. would love to hear that you"re familiar with tartaria.. Anyway I would love to have a beer with ya and pick your brain. take care broseph
Hey, Im really new here, but loving all this Portland history. Have you ever covered Vancouver history? I know large swaths of it don't have much before the 80's but there is officer's row and Kiggin's Theater that I imagine have some cool histories.
I think you had two separate videos in one here. My unsolicited advice: I would've made the flying ship story its own. All was interesting, though, just the same.
Hope ypu get bettet very soon. Thanks this was Great!!
Interesting
Ignorant killers? Or framed to get him out of the way, so "acceptable" real estate peeps could run this area? Did he threaten the status quo?
