  • When Father Ted is asked to appear on a television program, he does his best to make sure none of the other priests steal his moment in the spotlight.
    Beloved sitcom focused on three priests living on Craggy Island, a remote island off the west coast of Ireland. Father Ted Crilly is sent to the island as punishment for using charitable funds for a holiday in Las Vegas, but his true punishment comes in the form of Father Dougal Maguire and Jack Hackett, one a fresh-faced naive young priest, and the other a foul-mouthed, rage-filled alcoholic. Mrs Doyle is their nosy housekeeper, who makes plentiful pots of tea and never takes `no' for an answer. Despite their isolation, the priests get into their fair share of mildly sinful, entirely madcap adventures.

    In high school, we had a priest for a teacher and we were talking about our favorite TV Shows in class one day. He went on about how he loved Blackadder and thought it was the best show in the world. He was laughing and quoting his favorite lines from Blackadder. I asked him if he ever saw Father Ted, the smile ran away from his face and he suddenly became very serious, he gulped and said "Yes, yes I have" and then quickly changed the conversation. I always think about that whenever I watch the show.

    I need to say this somewhere, and this seems like the best place. I was sent to Ireland (Republic thereof, obv) several years ago on a work trip, and my birthday happened to fall in the week I was there. I begged for a couple hours off to go see the Father Ted house for a gift... just for a look, even. Well I got my wish even though it was a couple hours' drive, and my cabbie, John, who'd been contracted by my company to look after our transportation needs for the week, could scarcely believe I - an American girl - even knew wtf I was talking about (but my mother somehow raised me on British and Irish comedies because she's fucking funny, so I did indeed know). He told me he'd mentioned to his wife the night before what he'd be doing that day - taking some weird crying embarrassingly excited random ass American to *the Father Ted house* - and he said that she replied with "it's a shame Dermot Morgan didn't live to see this day!" It's been nearly ten years and I still have the photo of me nearly 50 yards off but distinctly AT the Father Ted house, and genuinely leaking tears of joy, as my profile photo in several places!!
    Ireland is such a lovely place full of such lovely people.

    I love this show. Keeping Up Appearances was the first show I ever watched. I watched it on VHS. We also watched Hogans Heroes. Which my mom was much less happy to let us watch. But this show, I laugh so hard I can’t breath some times. Thank you so much for making it available.

    I was looking up things about Irish stuff when I happened upon this show. Watched it for the 1st time for a few minutes & I am loving it already!!! The best detail I loved the most is that Father Dougal sleeps with a He-Man blanket. Loved that show & that wee bit makes it all.

      @Bigfoot well the key is the good natured bit. Thats what's appealing. Its just better with dougall because the underlying assumption would be that he's completely genuine because he's too dumb to know how to lie. He has a naive innocence about him, and I can't blame some people for finding that preferable to some of the "usual suspects" you find while dating.

    This shit is funny. I love being able to watch shows from the UK. Until cable TV took over in the U.S. all we ever got to see was Benny Hill and Monty Python or Masterpiece Theater on PBS. I'm happily binging on loads of shows the Networks thought we wouldn't enjoy. Funny is funny no matter where it originates.

    • @nibbler8309
      @nibbler8309 Před 4 lety +1

      PBS had Faulty Towers and a couple of others later in the 80's. I remember my parents watching Masterpiece Theater all the time. Upstairs Downstairs and Monty Python were my first taste of really good acting. I love the way television shows b/t 1970 - 1990's required the audience to play along. It's not real this farce. These are talented people who can act really well and I my room, acting out some shananigans and Its funny. Harmless kicks that stick in my head. Indeed.
