  • With a fresh Brigade from South Africa's Citizen Force taking over from the weary 61 Mech and 4 SAI, the SADF is ready to resume it's offensive against the Tumpo Triangle. FAPLA and the Cubans have not been idle though. As the battle for Cuito Cuanavale reaches it's climax, the attention of the opposing sides switches to the Peace Talks, but without a breakthrough the fighting gears up to be more intense than ever.

    I am Cuban. This is the best serial on the Angola-cuba war. I was born in November 1963. I was ready to be deployed tonAngola in 1982. I grew up fallowing the Angola war. Quite a few of my friends were killed. Others came back with wounds and mental problems. I played schizophrenic and homosexual since I did no want to fight for Castro. In 1986 I was able to flight to Panama and nov 87 to USA. Long live the SADF fighters.

    Kevin, thanks for putting this documentary series together, I know it must have been a lot of work!
    Very little of this information has ever been presented in a cohesive documentary format and at the time so much was hidden from the SA public. What was shown on SABC news did not indicate the ferocity or intensity of the fighting at all as little relevant detail was ever mentioned or shown!
    Clearly though the SADF and SAAF forces were hamstrung in many ways by equipment deficiencies and as you point out simple lack of resources to replace equipment rapidly whilst the opposition were supplied by the Soviets without difficulty. All being equal there would have been a somewhat different outcome!
    Of course the US who encouraged SA to become involved bailed out early and reneged on it's commitment of support, as is well explained in the book "in Search of Enemies" by John Stockwell who was the Chief of the Angola Task Force of the CIA. Never rely on the US as an ally, they are fair weather friends at best!

    Very interesting series of videos. I worked in the Personelle Ops Room from November 1987 to April 1989. We handled the processes and files of all the deceased and injured SADF and SWATF members. There were approximately 30 deceased members a month, mostly due to private and military vehicle accidents. I also recall quite a few malaria and meningitis cases coming through during that time. The government of the time was very honest with regards to actual deaths attributed to combat action and every one was acknowledged during the news bulletins of that time. The only time that the Government gave false information was towards the end of war an Olifant tank was destroyed by one of our own aircraft, but the official version was that it was destroyed by an enemy aircraft. If I recall correctly the incident took place close to Ruacana.

    I have watched all 9 episodes and found them fascinating. The footage and narrative were expertly crafted together to produce a very impressive history.
    As the step-son of a former Royal Artillery Bombardier, I have always had a soft spot for artillery and I found the coverage of the G5 and G6 especially interesting. Also the footage of the Cuban D30 and M46. I was amazed that the G6s were being exported when they were needed at the front and SADF had to make do with WW2 vintage 5.5 inchers
    I noticed that a lot of the SADF radio traffic was in Afrikaans. What happened if you were an English speaking soldier who spoke little Afrikaans? I ask this because I attended school in Jo'burg from 1965 to 69 and had great difficulty learning Afrikaans. Had I stayed in SA I don't know how I would have gone on!
    The references at the end roll a bit too fast for me, so could you post them here please?
    Look forward to the release of the second part of Episode 9 in June.
    Tot siens for now!
    Stephen

    If battle hardened conscripts could not penetrate the defences of the tumpu triangle, there was no way campers would be able to do it. I don't know what the brass were thinking. Clearly they had no intention of taking Quito cannavale.

    • @danielbtwd
      @danielbtwd Před 3 lety

      @@zommellemmoz3999 the campers had never seen combat like this. Many were very upset by what they were expected to do. Having gone through Hooper and reading the accounts of Packer, the attacks were carried out half heartedly. During Hooper and Modular the objectives were achieved. What's more the troops during Hooper and Modular were in the field for a much longer time and had fought successfully against all their objectives.
      By comparison, to the campers that were obliged to participate in operation Packer, the vetrans of Hooper and Modular were very much more hardened. The taking of the 21st brigade took three days. As did the attacks on the 25th and 59th.
      In those three days we were exposed to everything that the participants of Packer took a couple of hours to decide that they had had enough.
      I am not trying to detract. I think that driving into the thumpo triangle for the third time would without doubt be a terrifying experience. However it only lasted a couple of hours.
      Also they were not made to go through that experience multiple times. Being in battle once is not the same as being in battle multiple times.
      Especially when as a result of your first experience you give yourself a less than positive result in getting out alive.
      So I stand by what I say.
      I think that Packer was the boot kicking the dog out of the door and in doing that it has merit.

      An event he told me about in particular was a bit funny to me it was a time he was on a flight with the Cuban general of the region, and my grandfather hated this guy he was pretty much a commie snob and he knew it. I know that what if is not worth mentioning, but i have often wondered what if the sadf attacked with full force when we had them with there backs to the wall at cuito.
    Actually its not worth wondering about the fact of the matter is that afrikaans would have been the national language of angola and i dont think that the very same thing
    We fought against namely communists would now be rulling our country right now.

    • @Polla9203
      @Polla9203 Před 3 lety +1

      Listen more closely to the commentary, the SADF never had any intentions of occupying Angola, it was just to keep them far away North of the South West African Border so that fighting doesn't spill over into home territory. 95% of people don't even know why SA occupied Namibia.
      I had the pleasure of meeting 2 of the generals when I was young. My father was a mojor in the army and he never understood why we didnt force a full on attack and break the FAPLA forces. The explanation given was that it was a very higlhly gaurded secret of how many SADF soldiers were actualy stationed at the border. The SADF mainly used mech infantry and guerilla tactics for quick shoot and scoot attacks. With many small skirmishes happening all along the border of Namibia it give of an impression that the standing army was much larger then what it actually is.
      Due to economic sanctions , lack of political will, mounting public pressure and lack of equipment it would without a doubt been a tough battle for the SADF if the Cubans actually launched a full on assault. At the height of the escalation my father was conscripted from the reservists and called to the border. All in all the estimated fighting strength would have been about 35 000 SADF soldiers. If I recall correctly this was also when the transition started from the Apartheid government to the new one.

That would stand for 15 tank crews which sounds unreasonable. Or it was a combined arms effort and Cuban infantry somehow managed to suffer that much in exchange for 4 APCs, KO by Cuban tanks?
