- Pierre de Jager and Jan Malan served with 1 SAI and 61 Mech as platoon & company commanders. On August 3 1982, during Ops Meebos, Jan Malan took Pierre de Jager's platoon and flew with SAAF Puma helicopters north to ambush an enemy log convoy. They left their Ratel IFVs behind operating as infantry. What followed became one of the most successful ambushes of the war. This is their story. If you have questions for Pierre and Jan, please leave them below. Subscribe and activate the bell to be informed of new episodes.

Contagious positivity and enthusiasm from Jan Malan. Salute you.
Jan Malan was the Best of the BEST
Fine officers and soldiers. They will not be forgotten.
Dankie Koos, weereens 'n stukkie geskiedenis vasgevang. Evan Davies was ook daar en het 'n boek geskryf "Teenage Safari: A South African Conscripts in the Border War in Angola and Namibia.". In sy boek gee hy die eer aan 'n besondere leier, Kapt Jan Malan wat hy be skryf het in 'n brief aan sy ma as 'n Engel wat gestuur is! Salut aan Kol Malan!
What a pleasant experience to see these leaders again. Capt. Jan, always the perfect officer and Pierre, a great colleague at 1 SAI during 1983. God bless.
Thank you Jan en Koos. Jan Malan, one of the best and most courageous Mech Infanty leaders in the Bush war. Meticulous planner, good leader and inspirator. Great Pierre, Jan greatest respect!.
Thanks guys
Very good podcast thank you all for your input and making this possible Koos.
I watched this over this weekend.
Quite surreal in that I had taken to watching a lot of SADF videos the week before and related this particular encounter to my wife a few days BEFORE having watched it as I had heard about it many years ago.
I was on a Company Commanders course in Bloem (1986 if memory serves) and Pierre just happened to be on the same course! Had the privilege of hearing first hand as Pierre related this ambush (in detail I might add) to the rest of the course participants.
Then about 4 years ago I had the privilege of being present at a Johannesburg Regiment formal dinner where the guest speaker was none other than Col Jan Malan. His talk on the battle of Cuito Cuanavale was riveting, interactive with maps - totally absorbing.
"Distinguished combat leadership" the citation reads
These were the men that tamed the continent and built civilisation.
Jan is also the recipient of the Pro Virtute Decoration, for combat leadership - a very scarce and prestigious award.
Well deserved by Jan !
For sure
We as Alpha Company of 61 Mech 1982 had the privilege of having an outstanding Company Commander, Jan Malan
As a ex national servicemen 7SAI Bourkes Luck 1975 , i here the sentiment and positivness of Peace , sadly i at the age of 66 have come to the conclusion that South Africa ( im not talking about the positive their or here or he or she , has experienced or experiencing ) with its political leadership , those inpower and those wanting to be in power , on the whole DO NOT WANT CAUCASIANS , in this country
I am and always will remain a proud South African , whom has GOD to trust and ALL HOPE in my KING - JESUS - my armour ( Im a Seventh Day Adventist)
@Mr D, I will get someone to answer you, the Junior Leader Course at the School of Infantry is almost one year, Koos
Legends! All of them,we were in the next leader wing under Major Schoeman looking up to 61 in 82 and 83
48 hours never to be forgotten. Jan and Pierre, your leadership inspires me still today. I'm so grateful to have been there with you.
@Evan, come and tell us about your book, you are welcome here, Koos
Wow. Now I'm nervous!
Delete number please
Col Jan Malan is a fine, wonderful human being. A privilege to know him personally.
Ek ken vir Jan persoonlik van Lohathla toe hy op Kathu gebly het. Sjoe sou lekker gewees het om hom met die Generale teken op die skouers te sien. Beste is sy klas.
Awesome piece of history. Love it.
Well done
A great production ,tx Koos , Manne
I was lucky to have been in the caprivi in the quiet time in 1978.
Only 2 contacts.
The ratels and buffels were the most amazing vehicles to this day of useless heavy humvee.
Great listening
Salute / Saluut .
Salute to all involved.
Groot respek vir Jan Malan!!
33:48 Mielie meal from South Africa? Feeding the enemy?
Sad but true
The mielie meal cam from Zambia, it was yellow
So trots op jul, wil net vra, wat staan ons tedoen in die toekoms?
I see Pierre mention Bren machine guns. Didn't they have Mags at this point?
The Bren machine gun used was all old 2ww stock. With arms boycotts against the RSA, our army with the help of Krygkor changed all the .303 caliber Bren machine guns to 7.62 caliber.
I was trained at 4SAI in 1972 on the FN-MAG58.
In 1974 I was a camper at Reg. de Wet called up for a month's camp to Madimbo. There were our maggunners who were issued with Bren machine guns. We did not receive training on how the Bren machine guns work. This was the first time we saw the Bren machine gun, then turned it into storage and then didn't use it.
In 1976 our open group went to the border. Our company went to Mapacha where we met with a Lt. Huson (Sjoe-Sjoe) and his training team, where we got refresher training.
There we first learned how the Bren machine gun works.
The standard R1 twenty round mags fit the Bren machine gun.

Why you do not talk about the battle at oshinota at kalonga north of kuvelai where 7 south african helicopters shot down as well as oindungu battle where your forces abandoned vehicles?
