From talking with certain people in these groups, I think there could be a frustration in the notion of "USED to" when they discuss current issues that effect them. I was taught that American Indians "USED to" be mistreated by our government, but they still are. Many people thought that legalizing gay marriage would mean that homosexuals would no longer be "shamed and driven out", but such discrimination still takes place. I'm not saying you should cave into their worldviews (any person can get carried away), but it couldn't hurt to lend an ear and talk things over. Some won't be as patient or civil as others, but that's on them and them alone. I was taught growing up to judge people as INDIVIDUALS. People who will dismiss you outright for being a "straight white male" aren't worth the energy, but there will be PLENTY of people who are more reasonable than that.
