  • A new play based on the great myths of ancient history is reimagined for today! Psalmayene 24 directs this new version of Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses.
The story is based on the great myths: Orpheus losing his beloved Eurydice to the Underworld; King Midas nearly losing all he loves because of his greedy golden touch; and Phaethon torching the world when he borrows his dad, Apollo's, chariot. All as retold, by the Roman poet Ovid, in an opus completed around the year eight of this common era and inspiring other literature and art forms ever since.
In a witty, inventive staging at the Folger Theatre, Director Psalmayene 24 re-imagines Zimmerman's piece, and uses the intimacy of the Folger theater's space to striking effect. He also stays true to the myths, but presents them with a fresh eye in a visual and vocal style that evokes the African diaspora with the help of a terrific all-black cast and some talented designers. The result is a treat for the eyes, ears, and heart.
