  • Jane Horwitz takes us into "Mexodus," a brand-new play making its debut at Mosiac Theater.
"Mexodus" is a partially improvised two character hip-hop musical, about a little known aspect of the history of slavery in North America -- the escape of enslaved people into Mexico. It is an intimate two-character piece build as a hip-hop remix show with lots of improvisation and a complex story to unpack for an audience.
Quijada plays a Mexican ex-soldier, struggling to keep a small farm operating just south of the Rio Grande. Robinson plays a young man who has escaped slavery and made it barely across that river. Though he's been rescued by the gruff farmer, he isn't fully trusted by him. As events unfold, however, each man more or less saves the other one from disasters, and along the way, we learn about a corner of history that will surprise many of us and make us do our own research.
