1/48 Hasegawa Kittyhawk /P-40 - My FIRST commission build!

  • In this episode I take on the Hasegawa P-40E kit and build it as a 250 Sqn Kittyhawk in RAF service. This aircraft is in tribute to Pilot Officer Tweedie who was killed flying the aircraft on May 10th, 1942.
As my first commission build, I hit some snags with the kit that couldn't be simply put on the shelf for a few days to step away from. Custom masks are cut and no decals are used.

Love the way you've tied in all the info from historical research into the details, painting and weathering of this model! Model building is at it's best when the real history of the aircraft and the people behind it are realized in miniature.

Another superb build from you. In response to your question, my favourite part of a build is the painting and weathering stage. The less I like is decalling, because, if you make a mistake there it is difficult to correct, I enjoyed that before, but now I feel a little...." stress" while decling. I build 1/48 scale airplane models and try to drill and improve my skills in every build. Practise make Masters...lol.

The part of the build I dread is decals. They can be so inconsistent. Some sheets go down nice while others are a struggle. Even decals on the same sheet can perform differently. I’ve been painting insignia and squadron codes much more frequently. I’ve discovered HGW wet transfers for the stencils and they have been nice to work with too. Really enjoy your videos. Keep it up!

I have to make myself built the model. I hate building them but alas one must build if one wants to paint. Like you said, the final pieces like landing gear and under wing stores are always the worst. I will often build and paint those early in the project so they will be ready to just to glue on at the end of the build. My favorite part is the completed subject. I love looking at what I have built.

I hear you on the "get-there-itis." I've done several kits where there would be something like a mold seam present on a pitot tube, or part of the sprue gate left over on an antenna, or a hastily painted landing light, or whatever. You've really got to treat every part with equal respect.
I did Hasegawa's P-40 in 1/32 a while back and encountered a lot of the same issues you did, particularly with that separate tail piece. Restoring the lost detail around that seam was not a lot of fun. Gorgeous cockpit detail, though. Anyway, beautiful work! That riveting really does add a whole layer of interest that you don't notice straight away.

Once I get to the filling and sanding stage, my motivation drops, especially if I'm still seeing seams and imperfections on my first primer pass. It just seems like it will never end. That, and if a kit isn't going together as well as I had hoped....again, motivational killer. I do have to remind myself to slow down though once I get to the painting/decaling stage. If I start to rush, I make small mistakes and I just end of making more work for myself. I will say one thing about commission builds, as I have done more than a few over the past few years, always pick and choose....don't accept everything that comes your way. I build models for friends in the RCAF who have seen my work and tend to appreciate it....and they are flexible with schedules in terms of building and finishing the model. Having said that, it is hard to say no to a friend, so striking a balance between commissions and your own work is key. When I find that balance, I will let you know.

Hasegawa was the more troublesome build, but I love the way finished kit looks. I would like to display that US Army and Star with red dot under wing, like on a highly reflective base that looks like Ice on parked hardstand. I wish I would be bold and do more than most with Flying dioramas. That would show those US Army Pre War Markings under a said wing.

With regard to your getthereitis - I've heard another first class modeller, Jamie Haggo, discuss this and he uses gaps in the main build (drying/curing time etc) to get those 'last' bits and pieces done early. Closing off the model is then just about fitting them when painting and weathering of the aircraft is complete. Great job on this build.

Lovely looking model. My personal hate is decals, especially loads of little ones. I always seem to struggle with them or get a problem. Good luck on the commission builds but I know what you mean by being motivated with models that maybe are not of interest to you. I make models for one guy only, he lives on his own and his house is full of models. The problem is he seems to like the old kits and I get really fed up filing flash off parts and trying to make them look better by adding detail and getting sharper edges. I just wish he would buy me some Wing Nut Wings or similar modern kits to build.

Stencils on a 1/72. Imran, I'm 56 now and the old eyes aren't as good as they used to be. If you're close enough to a 1/72 to notice that the stencils aren't there, you're too close!! I'm with you on undercarriage as well. What happened to the inbox bases that manufacturers used to provide? They made "gear up" an easy option.

My biggest challenge is doing putty work, with armor like redoing the weld beads and adding zimmerit(when applicable). With aircraft, the putty work in filling the gaps to get a perfectly smooth surface is grueling to me. I like construction, and I love painting, but that middle transition isn’t fun as crucial as it is😂

My gripe is fine in a clear that actually is flat when you spray it or semi-gloss and gloss etc I have Tamiya ,aqueous all of migs AK interactive third generation hotaka lacquer clears which work excellent however they seem to have an orange tint or yellow tint and the best of all that I found that actual Sheen comes out which is actually stayed on on the bottle is all clad twos but those are too harsh I want to try something safer

So with so much thinner being used, how many layers are we talking here? Do you ever have issues with reactivating/bleed on the earlier layers? And why sometimes MLT and sometimes IPA but with the same brand paint? So many questions, sorry, but so fascinating!

    • @TheModelGuy
      @TheModelGuy  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Ben,
It seems like a lot of thinner, but you can see I'm not putting on heavy coats so reactivating isn't an issue. The reason for using IPA is for motling and soft work. The reason being it flashes off fast and gives you a lot more control over building up smoke or exhaust stains. The trade off is you have to be very tight to the model to prevent dusting it.

Great build as always. Hasegawa kits are beautiful but I’ve consistently found have a fit problem or two. Coincidentally I doing a “dedication “build for a friend. It’s a surprise. His uncle’s RCAF Hudson shot down crew KIA in the Pennemunde raids in summer 43. The Revell kit with some after market resin makes for decent build. Searching RAF and RCAF archives I too was able to get “action reports “ which has the crew name and the AC squadron markings. Happy modeling.

Airbrushing is the way to go. I have three airbrushes and a compressor with an attached air tank. Badger Patriot 105 .5 needle, Iwata Revolution .5 needle , Iwata Eclipse HP-CS .35 needle. The Badger is a OK airbrush. Affordable, very durable, easy to find, easy to clean and good for spraying thicker paint like primers. Iwata Revolution is a great all round airbrush. It sprays much better/finer than the Badger. Iwata Eclipse is the best of them all and is great for doing finer detail. The Iwata airbrushes scream quality thus are more expensive. If I had to choose a first airbrush it would be the Revolution or the Neo for Iwata. Both are affordable good quality first time airbrushes that will last a long time. You can get a more a expensive one in the future. In Canada Artists Emporium is an Iwata dealer with good prices and free shipping. In the US Hobby Lobby is a good place to buy as they regularly have 40-50% off coupons which makes the Iwata airbrushes very affordable. Compressors can be bought in many places but I bought one off Amazon Canada that works just fine.
