I just passed by this video looking at some WRX's for fun (good video by the way!). While driving a manual vehicle some tips that ive learned from different places is that fuel economy is better, if your cruising put it into the highest gear gives you lower RPMS (unless your giving it gas) vs a low gear like 3-4 at 70MPH is giving it more RPMS using more gas. The person driving it can really get the most fuel economy depending on how they drive and where they drive, highway is more fuel efficient vs a city of stop and go bumper to bumper traffic. The thing about the WRX is that the STI gets way lower fuel economy than the standard WRX. I've always wanted to purchase a Subaru WRX stock and mod it but I stuck with something easy to learn first before buying one. You've greatly impacted my decision for buying one later in the future.
As someone who just purchased a wrx without knowing stick it's super super easy to learn on and I'm glad I just went head into it instead of waiting

I know it says Premium recommended but not required. Everyone needs to understand the reasoning of why this particular reviewer did what he did. These cars already come with the lowest grade fuel put in and are kept like that until it is sold of course. Now putting in 91 with a mix of the 87 (that is already in the vehicle before review) is not going to get precise results anyway. For you to experience the true results of 91 you still have to run a couple of full tanks of nothing but 91. At least this mpg review is tested with straight 87 all the way through with no mix of 91, and more than likely have truer results (on 87). Also, I’m betting there are a ton of people wondering what an mpg test with 87 will get them, and here it is. Good review.
Either way he should have empty the tank for an excuse text and compared it with 87 and 97.. That's how most guys do it which is why he received so many negative comments

My 17' WRX averages 8.0 l/100km (26-29mpg) on a 10 hour road trip, but it's also stage 2 with a catless j-pipe, and a whole bunch of other mods on 93 octane with the average speed of 120 k/mh (74 mph). I also pass literally everybody at full boost. Lowest I got it down to was 6.4 l/100km (36-37mpg) by driving like a stunted granny... these cars are good on fuel.
I usually do a lot of highway miles. Thinking of grabbing one as a fun car, while my daily gets some maintenance done. have you ever ran it with a lower octane? Did it change anything?
I tend to eke out another 4-5 MPG averaging 65 on the highway, but that's with zero fun. With 93 octane, of course! Wouldn't recommend using anything lower than 91 unless it's a must.

I noticed you made a comment about the speedometer accuracy. I’ve heard that the gauge needle sweep at startup provides a “reset” or “zeroing out” to the dash cluster mechanism. Or is it all digital and the “sweep” is just superficial?
...after 33k miles, my 2019 gets a solid 28 mpg in my mostly highway drive...above 75 and mileage takes a huge hit...however, when I'm naughty and on the loud pedal, mileage suffers greatly and I'm in the low 20s...I've had the car compute up to 37 mpg and 510 miles to empty after a few fill-ups in the summer....the car computer is (very) optimistic
I owned a 2007 chevy cobalt SS with the 2.4L ecotec. The owners manual recommended 93octane or premium fuel. Mechanic at the dealership said You could use regular 87. I had the car from 40,000miles and sold it with 280,000. Never once had any engine issues or any burning oil ect. I ran tanks of 93 through it several times and actually got worse fuel economy and didn’t see a bit of difference in performance.
Correct, if recommended, you can use regular. This theory been tested many yrs ago
we have a 2020 WRX Stage 2, it only gets about 22-24 on the highway, 70-80 mph, we had a 2016 wax before and it too was stage 2 but it could muster 33 mpg same conditions. The gearing is different on the 2020 compared to the 2016 though.

I got 27.2mpg driving 70-75 mph. Definitely not great all considered, my 5.0 mustang would get 26-28 mpg 70-80mph.
hey just a tip. when going for a high mpg run you should probably use the recommended fuel type.
I can get up to 33mpg on the highway from San Francisco to San jose consistently in my wrx. Using premium

Car might be quoting consumption in imperial miles per gallon not US miles per gallon. The imperial gallon is 1.2 US gallons. Might be why your computer is saying 32.
Why are you putting 87 when its recommended to put 91 or above?

I bought a new 2020 WRX and there is recommendation and accepted alternatives. The last page of owners manual reads as follows:
STI
The engine is designed to operate at a maximum performance using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 93 AKI (98 RON) or higher. If 93 AKI (98 RON) fuel is not readily available in your area, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 AKI (95 RON) may be use with no detriment of engine durability or drivability. However, you may notice a slight decrease in maximum engine performance while using 91 AKI (95 RON) fuel. Use of 91 AKI (95 RON) fuel will not affect your warranty coverage.
Except STI
Use unleaded gasoline with an an octane rating of 91 AKI (95 RON) or higher. If 91 AKI (95 RON) fuel is not ready available, unleaded gasoline with an octane reading of 87 AKI (90 RON) may be used.

87 ignites a lot slower than 91/93 and it increases the chance of knock which means running 87 is bad for the engine and isn't worth the risk. Definitely shouldn't run anything but premium.
Is it normal for the rpms to be that high at that speed? I just got my wrx and when i first went 76-78mph i was around 3k rpm
depends on the year, our 2016 wrx has a different gear ration than our current 2020 wrx, it is high rpm at highway speeds and way worse gas mileage.
So same as the mustang?!?!?

I want one but I do a lot of highway miles. But I already have a highway cruiser that eats up miles around 27 mpg. (With mods to aero and fresh new front suspension) 2000 Grand Marquis LS.
I want this for my fun car! Car meets and all! The Marquis does get a lot of attention, but I would like to go back and forth. Whats gas worth when you got two tanks?

One of the last few cars you can buy new that has a hydraulic steering. What do you think of the steering? Does it have good feedback? Is it quick and precise? I hate electric steering!!

Yas Dakota speaks the truth. The steering is quick, precise and actually provides excellent feedback. The car has, quite notably, received great commentary from all the reviewers who’ve driven it. I know because I’ve watched every review ever made. But yes, it is electric and I think it’s quite good. Actually I love the way it steers though I do wish it was hydraulic, but that’s life.
To echo Shikhar, it is one of the better EPS systems we've driven, especially when it's loaded up around a corner. Not quite Mazda or Porsche levels, but very close.
87 on WRX is a sin
I love how some wrx owners on reddit from what I've seen say they claim they got 35 mpg lol and I'm just like that's complete bs. First off the reading in the car isn't accurate at all. Secondly the car is rated 21/27 so there is no way you are getting 35 mpg.
It’s not that hard to hit 37 at 6th gear when the engine is in the low 2k high 1k rpm range.

Pretty sure a vehicles speedometer/tripometer is more accurate than a gps
Especially a phone app. Car computers know the diameter of the stock wheels, gear ratio etc!
