Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, you just witnessed Rock and Roll History: Band-Maid's Guitar-Bass duel during "HATE?" at Lollapalooza 2023.
That performance was early in the afternoon. The night before they had performed a late night 'Aftershow" and the next day: they did this!

As a drummer you will appreciate these 2 tracks . Domination live 2020 and Freedom live. The girl who came up with the Maid concept is Miku, gtr/vox, and she writes the lyrics. her nickname Pidgeon , hence pidgeon hole reference. As you see, best hard rock band on the planet .

I think the reason we like Hate so much is because the Maids have so much fun playing it. They get to go wild. Especially Saiki, since she wrote the lyrics. And Dice is just quintessential, hard rock Band-Maid at its finest. Thx, Gigi!

These Maids have more. Much more. Different. They have more variety in their music than any other current band that I’m aware of.
    “Shambles” was metal pop/anime rock.
“DICE/Hate?” are more mainstream hard rock with what I call the “soundtrack” vibe; theatrical music.
Band Maid is precise, tight, and like you said, bubbly and fun.
If you’re legit curious about what else they offer? Choose a path:
Arena Pop Rock “Domination,” official live video
Metal Instrumental “From Now On,” official music video
Another example of what I call “soundtrack” hard rock “Puzzle,” official live video
The more feedback you give on your musical tastes, the easier it is to find a Maid service for you. They really do many genres. Post hardcore punk. Alternative. Acoustic. Progressive rock. Even slow jam ballads.
Bonus: if you want another bass vs guitar battle? “Don’t you tell ME,” Live 2018 @Zepp Tokyo

Miku Kobato (the rhythm guitarist/second vocalist/band founder) is an 810 year old small pigeon. Hence the "Pigeon Hole" Po!
Just think, they play like this for 2+ hours at a time. I've seen them four times and they are wild live!
Here you go: meet the ladies:
Miku Kobato "Little Pigeon" - band founder - rhythm guitar and second vocals. Main lyricist. Claims to be an 810 year old pigeon and makes pigeon noises when she speaks. Po! Very good at poker, into horses - betting on them and eating them. Very clumsy, may fall into ditches. Miku is hilariously funny and is the heart and soul of the band.
Saiki Atsumi "The Ice Queen" - Lead vocalist and frontwoman. The youngest member at 29. Into train spotting and collecting trainers (sports shoes). Very girly, into doing her nails and is a fashion icon. Really into Baseball and the Hanshin Tigers. Don't mess with her you will lose. But she has a heart of gold and a killer dry sense of humour. Recently started writing lyrics. Has final say on songs.
Kanami Tono - "Kanamincho" or usually just "Mincho" for short. Lead guitar and an absolute genius songwriter. Total riff machine. Has two personas. Normally a tiny cute and shy very polite lady who seems very innocent (the band have to explain dirty jokes to her). Until she puts on her guitar. As the band say "then she gets quite violent" - she turns into the shredding rock star she is. Takes guitar off, back to the little girl. Likes cake, coffee and is totally infatuated by Saiki. She adores Saiki very much, to everyone's amusement.
Akane Hirose - "The Gorilla" on Drums. Seems to be the sane member of the band, but is actually the band clown. Has an enormous appetite, seen eating in a lot of MV's. Eats a lot of bananas including on stage, hence the nickname. But she is terrible at actual cooking. Usually has a big grin on her face while drumming manically, Akane was also a DJ (under the name DJ Achi) and likes dancing and goofing with MISA.
MISA (all caps, no last name) "The Barefoot Assassin" on bass. An absolute bass prodigy, MISA is very shy onstage (a total clown offstage with Akane). Nickname comes from the fact she plays barefoot and looks like an assassin. Because of shyness often drinks onstage, you can often spot a bottle of Jim Beam on her amp. She drinks it neat. Lately drinking more beer than whiskey though, good girl. Doesn't say much, but when she does it's usually totally hilarious! At a lot of concerts you will hear the fans chanting MISA! MISA! MISA! which has become a slogan.

Loved the reaction! Yes you have just begun to scratch the serfice. I love that this band never gets boring to listen to with the way they can be so catchy yet so itricate. And they vhave songs all up and down the rock spectrum. Most of their songs are writen by the litte monster that is the lead guitar player on the purple PRS in this video and she never dissapoints. I suggest the video for Manners/Blackhole next. It is from one of the live stream shows they did during COVID and I trhink that video in particular does an amazing job at showing the contrast they can have between two songs off of the sasme album.

It would be a Rabbit Hole, like in Lewis Carol's Alice In Wonderland. However, like BabyMetal has a Foxhole, BAND-MAID has a Pigeon Hole, because Miku is a Pigeon, who is hundreds of years old. He last name, Kobato, means "Little Pigeon". The sound and camera work on this isn't up to BAND-MAID standards, but the performance on 'Hate' makes it worth it. But not only are they fantastic musicians, but they write amazing songs. And this was their 10 Year Anniversary Tour, so they have well over 100 songs and counting. So you have a lot of catching up to do.

The rhythm guitarist won a singing contest but the vocal band they put her in didn't work out. so she asked if she could form a different band, and the record company said ok. She believes she is a small pigeon because she is pigeon toed. She writes the lyrics and has a side project called "cluppo". The band itself has a side poject called BAND-MAIKO. There is so much to learn about.

Glad you got to this one. I've watched this a bunch and never tire of it. The pigeon hole refers to Miku who started the band and created a musical miracle. The maid concept is hers, the band's creation is hers, she's the voice and spirit of the band. She writes practically all the lyrics for the songs. There's an interview out there that explains why she calls herself a pigeon. She dug the pigeon hole, welcome to it. Best rock band on the planet.

    This was rolling stone's review.
"Japanese Rockers Band-Maid Put Guitar Center Showoffs to Shame
There’s a pun to be made about how much Band-Maid ripped, but the Japanese group goes even harder than that. Fluctuating between hard rock, aughts nu-metal, and pop rock, each member of the quintet is a virtuoso in her own right with more than a decade of practice in Band-Maid alone. They lured curious onlookers into the fold when highlights like “Domination” and “Don’t You Tell Me” got huge reactions from the crowd, but it was the bass solo-versus-guitar solo duels mid-song that got the biggest cheers. This is what those guys in Guitar Center think their ridiculous riffing sounds like. Turns out it’s done best, and most effortlessly, by women in black-and-white maid dresses and frilly hair-pieces as they smile ear to ear."

  • @surfingasongwave
    @surfingasongwave Před 6 měsíci +3

They've honed their stage presence over the years with lots of gigs. Saiki (vocals) has mentioned how they feed off of the response of the crowd, and how much they love playing for people. The covid years were really hard on them. They did a number of live streams and they were very good - I'm glad they did something to keep their name out there and give their fans something to watch - but it's weird to rock out a song like this and then when it ends there's nothing but silence and an oscillating fan beside Akane's drum kit. They were _very_ happy to be back on tour!
There's a live stream double-header of *"Manners" / "Black Hole."* It was partly funded by a government program that helped them earn some income while live shows were not viable. It was streamed on "The Day of Maid" (they do something special every May 10th) and the two songs show how broad their sound can be. "Manners" is groovy and bluesy, and an anthem - _"our rock never dies ever. Forever!"_ and "Black Hole" is not groovy or bluesy. You'll barely remember hearing "Manners" by the time "Black Hole" ends. You might be holding your head, though.

Their origin is akin to a "Garage band"-like formation, and, yes, they were or can be session musicians. Miku Kobato (小鳩 = the 1st kanji character means "small" + 2nd kanji character means "dove or pigeon") (2nd V, Rhythm G, the founder of the band) searched YT and found Kanami (lead G, Main composer). Kanami worked with Akane (Dr) on session projects and asked Akane if she wanted to play. Akane went to Music college with Misa (bass), and asked if she wanted to play. Management suggested Saiki (1st V) to be the #5, but she would probably say no if she was told about the maid uniform, so Miku hid that bit of info until just before their 1st live gig. Saiki says she was tricked into this concept. Now, I think Saiki is ok with the way things worked out after 10 years together, and she has the final say in everything Band Maid, Po! Ganbatte! 🦍🍌PS, Be it that this show will be forever iconic and spoken of in the "halls of fame," the Hulu team that delivered this film was lost. I don't think that will happen in the future now that Band Maid has landed in the upper echelon, Po!

I want to write a whole essay on how bad a job the director of the camerawork did in this, but, nah. I'll just focus on the extra treats Band-Maid gives live audiences. In the studio version of "Hate?" there is no back and forth part. It goes from Saiki singing up to that point, right into the solo Kanami busts out at the end of the back and forth. This is an example of why Band-Maid is a must see live kind of band. They will throw in extras like that. From "Play" having a recent Miku solo at the opening, to their first live call and response bit between MISA and Kanami in the song "Don't you tell me". And even whole songs that, they haven't released on an album yet! I can't remember the name of the song, because it was played pretty recently at a show in Japan (or was it Hong Kong's show?), but I heard about it, and really wanna hear it!
But yeah. They are MUST see live, and if you do, maybe you'll even get to see them goofing off with each other in the background. Like making goofy faces at the drummer to make her mess up. (Which doesn't happen and often backfires) Or Kanami sitting on the screen with the lyrics to hide them from Miku. (Think that was in the "Freedom" live video, if I remember right)
Anywho! Next US tour soon please, Band-Maid!

You’re a little spoiled now… the Maids are always great but that duel in Hate is sone next-level face melting. There’s still tons of great music from them to discover, though!
