The ball bearing and what was left of a spring act as a one-way valve to help keep the flow of glue traveling in the right direction and stop it flowing out too fast. It maintains the amount of pressure required to start and keep the glue flowing. Removing it may stop the gun working as designed.

Perhaps not, but they are probably prone to dribbling glue when not in use.
edit found & tried out the thread , for bike pump needles its a M8 x0.75 (same as Dremel and proxxon chucks use)
you can find taps and dies on ebay. like if you find it useful info ;)
not all bike pump needles are same, mine dont fit dremmel chuck
just make sure you have the package for your air needle and use or buy tap accordingly
but to buy accordingly you first need the name of the thread to seach for it :D. There are some other not so common dremel chucks. i found this info for you: tooljuice.com/different-dremel-chuck-collet-systems-explained/ , for the needles it depends on which continent you live. I live in europe.
It's a good idea! How long warming long needle when it is filled with frozen glue? Thermal conductivity in thin metal is low, I have concerns that the use of a gun after curing adhesive without additional heating of the needle will not be possible.
The glue is also a factor, it melts inside and can still push out hot glue
Back flow prevention is why the spring and ball is there.

technosasquatchfilms Doesn't work on my dollar store glue gun. A fountain of glue comes out when I plug it in.
The glue once hardened in that extended tip will take a considerable amount of time to re soften, IF it does at all. I see no real advantage here. There are glue gun manufacturers that offer long tips for their guns but they are made different and quite a bit more expensive to buy. My tip: Leave your cheap glue gun alone or plan on buying a new one once you try this on it.

The wire is a force spring and the ball used as a non split valve to make sure that no melted plastic will be spilled when the gun not used
that is not a piece of wire.... that is a spring... loaded with a ball.... so that when the glue stick is pressed when the gun is not heated it will not affect the heating area :)
But there are ready-made nozzles that are similar. Would be easier and probably cheaper just to buy one of those as long as your glue gun has standard size threads, which I have found are 7/16 in.
nice tutorial!! Have you heard about 3D pen ? it uses filaments of plastic that are heated and than they came thru a fine hoje and make possible you draw in 3d. the plastic comes to solida state very fast. is it possible to do something similar in a DIY manner

The steel wire and ball were part of a check valve to prevent the glue gun from leaking melted glue.

My gluegun doesn't have such mechanism to prevent the leakage :(. Now I know what I'll do with it - Changeable nose, and springed valve.
Or just buy new one with changeable nose )))))

Pretty cool Roman! I was trying to do something similar a while back and gave up when I couldn't find a suitable nozzle. I wish I would have thought about this nozzle. Great work.
Use 3d printer nozzles
The ball and spring make up a ball valve to cut off the flow of glue when the trigger is released.
why not just shorten that needle so the glue wont have as much chance to harden inside of it... the precision tip is nice but you really don't need it to be that long, am i wrong?

Hi Dee C, solder melts at approximately twice the temp of the high temp glue guns so an easy modification is unlikely. Good times to you!

Just pull the glue stick back about 3mm when you stop, this will work for a minute. And find a way to have the gun pointing up when you leave it for longer. Maybe get a couple of pieces of wood and make something to hold it . But longer than five minutes I turn it off. ;¬)

Looks like it's a specialized oddball size. The easiest/closest thing to try would be a 5/16-32 tap and see if it works.
It doesn't work, the glue cools inside the tube, it has no mass to retain heat.
in other words i need to spend more money to buy something that can be buy for less money.
What is it you can buy that will do this job for less money? It's pretty cheap, a glue gun is about $3USD and valves are about $2USD for 10, so for $5USD it's a pretty good mod. And most people have a cheap glue gun in their toolbox and almost everyone has a ball pump valve.
+Gulzar Hussain it's a good alternative if the hardware/craft store local to you doesn't do glueguns with small nozzles for as cheap as the normal ones
