Thanks for this video! Exactly spot on what I was looking for. Most of these hubs I've seen don't have all these features at this price point (Both M.2 and SATA internals as well as the improved USB speeds, and card readers!)The fact is can take external power is actually the cherry on top- looking at these most don't have that option. I had the Mini crap out on me complaining about USB power when I hook it up to USB monitors (speakers) and a Scarlett 2i2 USB interface on a USB switch box. (That I use with 3 other computers). When switched to the Mini it would switch off citing a power issue. When used with a powered USB hub, it works just fine. So this being powered IS a want for some setups. I just ordered this, I think it will solve all my storage issues. Honestly, this seems absolutely mandatory for M1 Mini owners like myself, using apps like Logic Pro and multitrack projects on an external drive. My older Intel Macs used to handle this no problem, and with all the hype of the M1 I was shocked to find it has USB speed and power issues. The bump in performance of the T5 drive (exactly what I'm using) should be plenty to overcome the hiccups. An M.2 of 1TB or larger is icing on the cake! Anyway, thank you! This is a great value!

@@UKBROOKLYN Hey, yes. This hub works great. I just use a USB charging station that has 6 ports and is rated at 60W. Got it off Amazon, not sure the brand but look for one that's highly rated. No issues at all with it powering this hub and works perfectly with the mini. (You don't need 6 ports of course but I also charge phones and other devices with it).

I bought the OWC tbolt3 hub which is about 3x the price but use my 2 tb WD Passport on one of the M1 Minis precious Tbolt ports believing it would be faster than on the powered OWC hub. I’m still on Big Sur, but this information is highly suggestive that I might even gain speed by moving it. I also have a WD mine drive in a case that I use on my M1 iPad. Put it this way: both are fast enough! 😛
I have a Samsung QVO 4TB SSD in a caddy connected to my M1 MBP and sometimes, on a sunny day if the computer feels like being nice, it will connect at 10 GBPs but more often than not, 5.
Sometimes turning the cable around helps, and it really shouldn’t, so I think it’s just a fluke.
As I use the drive to load in rather large sample libraries, I might be picking up this hub, so thanks for making this video.
This 5Gbps lark is really irritating for what I do.
I know it’s a niche thing, so probably most won’t care but it is honestly quite annoying. I wish it was more consistent.

My theory is that the hub features some USB controller circuitry that - when paired with the T5 - is more compatible than the Mac’s own controller...which helps to smooth out the kinks.
By the way, is it possible to max-out the theoretical 10gbit throughput by copying from both SSDs and the T5 simultaneously?

I got much faster speeds when I put the Qwiizlab hub on an M2 Mac Mini (1TB NVME, 24GB ram. 10GB Lan). Even though the Qwiizlab is not thunderbolt 4 I used a thunderbolt cable as the supplied cable seemed unreliable.
I installed a 2TB WD black NVME and an 8TB Samsung 870 QVO SSD into the Qwiizlab. With the NVME I have sequential read speeds of between 960-1050 MB/s and write speeds between 980 and 1100 MB/s. With the SSD I get sequential read speeds of 400 to 450 MB/s and write speeds of 440 to 480 MB/s. For comparison the internal 1TB NVME scores in the 3200 MB/s neighborhood for both read and write. (I understand the smaller NVME sticks Apple provides are much slower, especially the 256GB base model.)
When I connect the Qwiizlab to a fast PC using the same type of storage formatted as NTFS, I get speeds about 20% faster then I do from the Mac Mini.
If you are having problems with the Qwiizlab, upgrade the cable and always use power.
Notice that I have had no problems with an 8TB SSD.
Using the Mac Mini 10GB network adapter I get sequential read/write to a RAID 6 QNAP NAS (12x20TB 7200 RPM Ironwolf Pro HDD) , also at 10GB reads at about the same speed as the Qwiizlab NVME and writes about the same speed as the Qwiizlab SSD.

my Promise Pegasus TB RAID enclosures ( both 4 bay and 6 bay) have all become paperweights under M2 MacMini/Ventura
What do you use for power? So I can use a thunderbolt 4 cable to connect to it, I also have an M2 Mac mini.
Quite nice at the price, very useful with the internal drives which are a cheaper way to expand the M1 Macs, a good fit for the Mac mini (will it fit next model?), but I am fascinated that for such a large hub, it has so few ports, most not fast.

Looks like a nice addition for any recent Mac mini, and the price is ok, given its features. For a relatively unknown company, I would have expected a price more in the $50-$60 range, but if it’s durable, $80 isn’t outrageous.
This product is priced in the $40-50 range in Asia but we have to pay $100 in Europe.

Video shows hub at $99 normally - but since then they've raised the retail to $129, effectively wiping out the discount code. At that price, a thunderbolt3 external enclosure becomes viable.

I've seen a number of reviews of a hub that's pretty identical looking to this one, but they all have a different company name attached to them. I'm guessing the same factory in China builds all of these, and there are a number of small companies that resell it.

I got this hub now for half a year. I'm very content with it! It's fast with SSD and external HD on USB's are also good with speed.
What SD card you recommend? I want a large size (1TB) and fast speed.
I got the same interface from Qwiizlab. I am waiting for my M.2 drive. When I get it, I will run the disk speed tests on it and the SSD that I have in there as well. One other documentation disappointment is the lack of description of the LEDs on the front. There's a blue LED that seems to be power on, but there are 2 others, a green and a white one that just seem to blink...
I couldn’t figure the LEDs out either. I think I would prefer just a single white one to match the Mini better.

3 little LEDs indicate status for Power (blue), M.2 SSD (green) and SATA HDD (white) respectively.
I measured writes of 676 MB/s for a WD M.2 SSD Black (1 TB). The performance of an 2.5" ssd in the disk slot appears to be the same as high speed USB gen2 port.

I bought the Qwiizlab UH25 Pro hub basically because of this review, took about a month to arrive in Canada from China, and it worked for a couple of weeks, then the M.2 and SATA SSDs stopped working reliably. Get constant disconnection notices on my MAC. Contacted the vendor, and they advised to update the firmware. Did that and same result. Still disconnecting both drives. So they offered be a $20 refund, and case closed. Now I've got a $80 USB hub once their refund actually arrives, with no internal drives. Bit of a waste actually.
Well that sucks. It's entirely reasonable to expect that a small percentage of any product will be faulty, but that's a poor response. If it's faulty you should be sent a replacement unit. I've highlighted your comment with my contact.

@@ConstantGeekery They didn't contact me, but Qwiizlab did process an $80USD refund, instead of the $20USD they had initially offered. So I have to assume it's through your intervention that happened. My search for the ideal MAC Mini hub continues. For now I'm just going to go with the OWC Thunderbolt hub. I do lose the form factor, and will have to connect the NVME M.2 and SATA SSD drives via Thunderbolt in their own enclosures, but hopefully going function over form works out. Thanks!

This one looks to be the most interesting among the "Mac Mini sized hub with xDD enclosure" (a category that is surely growing !), given it also has M.2 slot.

Just placed my order, i have a T7 and 2 T5, i will add an Nvme as well as a big ssd inside.
And after 3 months, i have the USB hub, the T7 the speed is slower than on mac mini directly, 700mb read on mac mini - 630mb read on hub, i dont really need more speed, but i'm a little bit disappointed.

It doesn’t specifically state in the specs. They do say the port can transfer at 5 Gbit/sec… which if true would actually be UHS-III spec. I doubt that though. I will do some testing…!
I got a base m1 to use as a terminal for remote work. The quiz lab hub allows some convenient expansion with a very small footprint. The m1 is replacing a 2008 cheese grater Mac.
I got the same result with my 2big dock. Usb-c on dock does not work but when I plug usb-c drive on the thunderbolt meant for daisy chaining it much faster than directly plugging in M1. @apple I am confused

Hi, thanks for this review. I found a similar hub/dock on amazon, and there were some issues raised on the mounted SSD disappearing when waking the Mac mini from sleep mode and not being able to re-mount. Have you come across any issues like this?
I haven’t noticed that yet, but I also haven’t had much chance to use it in anger other than testing for the review. I will update if I find any issues.
why there is no thunderbolt hubs to get full potential from device?
My old MacBook 12 inch is broken regarding the hard drive, so I was thinking of putting a Samsung hard drive through it, the problem is all the cheaper dongles unless powered, don’t Support that many external demanding devices.
In short, if you connect the hub to the MacBook, do you know if it’s a powered connection, will it power the MacBook as well as itself?
I will wait until they push a version with UHS-II sd card readers.

I'm using this exact dock with my M1 Mac mini. I also have a 500GB Samsung 970 EVO M.2 drive mounted in it. I put it to sleep every time I'm done using it and it's never given the "hasn't been ejected properly" message. I also use WIFI to connect and have no issues. I hope this answers your questions.
I have a 2023 Mac mini pro. It did cause interference with the Wi-Fi… I added 4 felt spacers between the Mac and dock… solved the problem. Guess the antenna is on the bottom and needs some space.
I am really fascinated with the Trebleet Thunderbolt 3 dock; it has 10Gbps USB A powered ports and a separate power supply.
I'll have to check that one out. Love that it's powered. I had one of these cheapies like in the video and everything was fine at first, but shortly after, I got random drive disconnects, memory-card reader stopped working, kernel panics, etc. I remove it for a month and all is good with the kernel panics, so not sure what the deal is.
@Road Runner Garage I have heard of random drive disconnects with the cheaper hubs but that may be due to the OS, dead reader is just QC, kernel panic I have not heard of. I like the idea of a separate power supply because I have heard of the Mac mini's ports burning out.
Now, though, I am thinking of the Caldigit TS4.
I hope they keep updating the mac mini m1 to read and write faster.
Just returned the POS hub that I got on Amazon (it was the last day to return!) that only had room for a SATA drive and no type-C port. I ordered the Qwiizlab and got the discount price ($80) even without a code. They said a code would be coming as the product was going to return to MSRP ($140) in 2 days, unless you have the code.

I think the OS is throttling them. To prevent overheating and stressing the already small power supply..Why the speeds are faster. When you transfer between the two drives in the hub...I'm not sure about the Thunderbolt ports on the Mac Mini... As an External NVMe should be around 6gbs. Using OWC Envoy Pro SX says 2000 write speed. Then 2500 read. But says up to 2900 read and write...
And you can boot Mac OS off them....
I got the same HUB but can't seem to power my Crussial NVMe drive. Where do you connect the USBC cable? Directly to the M1 mini's USBC? or to an external power source?
I like the design of this product. The issue I have is that the SSD drive will disconnect itself at most inconvenient times. I using above spec cables and power supply. My computer is Mac Mini M2. Do you have any suggestions?

Apologies for my question, I’m still learning about this stuff but, Is the addition of the SATA drive necessary for operation? Or could you use it as the only drive in the hub to expand storage?
You don’t need to install any drives, or you can use either or both.
i bought a hub and found some bottleneck issues; i added a 4tb hard drive by samsung and plugged a dvd drive to a usb port in the fron of the hub so this meant the computer read the information and then had to encode the file into a mp4 which did affect performance. though this was obvious i guess
I have found that when I run Blackmagic speed tests, often, but not always, the 1st time running it on a drive recently connected will lead to much poorer performance than subsequent tests that are run immediately after the 1st test. I wonder if the operating system is using some buffering techniques to cause this? So what I usually do is run the test 4 times, tossing out the 1st result and then taking an average of the three remaining tests, assuming that the last 3 tests are similar in performance. Do you take averages? Or one time tests?
Sometimes I do averages, and sometimes i just let the test run a few cycles to get a consistent result. Like you, I’ve seen that sometimes the test runs differently first time. I think the odd result in this set here might have been due to macOS updates downloading and unpacking in the background, but who knows 🤷🏼♂️ My bad for not checking that.
Have you tried putting a 4amp charger into the usb c on the back which says it’s for power.?
I suppose that the hub/dock could work far better if it has a thunderbolt connection instead of a USB one, but it would make it more expensive.
Yep. Prices for Thunderbolt docks are getting more reasonable, but I haven’t seen one that matches the Mini neatly like this.
Hi there!! Can you please clarify the difference between a Thunderbolt 3 dock vs a version 4 type? I am hinting at OWC for instance. Beside the name changing , both should work the same with the M1.
Thunderbolt 4 has stricter certification rules. The M1 only allows one external display, so it doesn’t meet the Thunderbolt 4 criteria, but you can use a TB4 dock with the Mini. There’s no difference in performance between 3 and 4. It’s a very frustrating standard for consumers!
Can it be used to connect to displays?
All roads seem to lead back to your channel lately haha. Recently acquired a Mac Pro 2013 and am considering this as a hub and additional storage. Sitting the Mac pro on top of this with TB to USB C adaptor. This should work right? Also would that additional USB C port also give me a USB C port on my Mac Pro?
Finally I'm upgrading my internal SSD to an NVME soo. Would my existing Apple SSD 500 be compatible with this dock?

Glad you’re enjoying the content 😁 I have a feeling it may not work - as I suspect the adapter will not pass through power. It may be possible if you plug a USB C power supply into the power port, but I don’t have a Mac Pro at the moment to test that on.
The TB3 to TB2 adapters I’ve tried will only pass power one way: from a TB3 host to a TB2 device. I haven’t seen or tested a TB2 to USB-C adapter.
Assuming you can find a solution that works, then you would gain the USB-C port. Your Apple SSD won’t fit in the dock though as it has a proprietary pin format. You’ll use an adapter to put an NVME drive into your Mac Pro, but I haven’t seen an adapter that goes the other way.
A Thunderbolt dock may give you more expansion and better performance, but it will cost more.
@@ConstantGeekery thanks for the answer. With the adaptor I’d need a tb2 cable too which is very pricey too. So at first glance this was the perfect way to expand ports a little and make use of the ssd for a reasonable price.
However if the ssd won’t work and the adapter is £15 (on sale) and the cable is £20 from China, it’s less compelling. I thought the space grey version would be a perfect pedestal for it.

@@ConstantGeekery in other news when I was configuring my old iPhone to be a webcam for my Mac Pro, I used a terminal command meant for for windows to use a different graphics card and it worked. So it uses one of the dedicated cards while the system and other apps use the other. Do you know of a utility to force other apps on to cards. Seems logical to share the burden. When I moved the webcam drivers to the other card it meant it didn’t have to use 300% cpu as it wasn’t competing for the GPU.
I downloaded g switch, however that seems to to switch the whole system to a diff graphics card. Anyway yes I have enjoyed the content. Building up to the upgrade.
@@duffinjp there’s no easy way to do it AFAIK. Apple really dropped the ball by not making it easy to develop apps for the dual GPU.
Did you power the hub? Not sure about the T5 thing, but curious if the hub is powered if that would help on the transfer speeds

my guess: the usb hub's firmware has been altered in a way that tricks the latest monterey beta into using more of it the m1's potential.
Amazon shows the two usb-c plugging into the Mac. That may improve your results.
The second port is just for additional power, which can be supplied by the host machine, or a separate charger. You'd only need it if you had a spinning disk in there and were using a number of power hungry peripherals.
Has anyone have issues with Bluetooth or WIFI with this hub? I know, some were having issues with Bluetooth drops out and slow wifi with other hubs, as the antenna is on the bottom of the Mac Mini.

Both, but I never plugged in enough peripherals to need the external power.

The hub is a very interesting accessory. The internal NVMe drive thing is what caught my interest and I figured that could be a nice external drive for the rare occasions I take a Windows laptop on location. Do you think the hub would work on a Windows machine too? Another great video by the way!

It works on Windows even faster if you use NTFS. If you want to work interchangeably from a Mac and Windows, format the drives as ExFat. NTFS mounts onto the Mac as read-only.
Were the test run with the USB-C to usb-a power adapter plugged into the usb-a port on the Mac mini? I believe he said he was using it without the c2a power plugged in. Is there a difference when it is plugged in? Can it be plugged into the wall with an adapter/block? Would that make a difference?
It makes no difference - I have tested many combinations.
I'm curious to know if you added power to the dock/hub would it made a difference with read and write speeds?

The drive is still considered as external right? My concern is the iCloud drive and OneDrive drive won't be installed on the removable drive.
It is an external drive.
Can you actually use external power to power the hub while it’s connected to the mac? A lot of Chinese made hubs have a port on the back that can provide power but it’s the same port that controls data to the mac so using an external supply is actually impossible.
This one has two ports, so it should be fine.
I've come to the conclusion that a dock has the card reader and headphone stuff. Where as the hub is ports only.
Are you going to test this now with the new M2 Mac Mini? This might be interesting..?

So what is the power source if you wanted to power the hub 5 V couple milliamps?
The USB-C port on the Mini is good for 15W, so most people won't need additional power. If you're running multiple spinning disks, you might want to supplement that. You could run a Type-A to Type-C cable from the Mini to the hub for an additional 2.5 - 4.5W (depending on what spec Apple have used), or any USB-C charger, many of which offer 18W or more.
Bought one couple weeks ago. This Quizzla hub for my Mac mini M2 pro. SD and Micro Sd card readers does not work ???? It doesn't mount on my desk at the screen ???? Do I have something special to do ? Change my connection pattern ??? Could you help please ? Thanks
Check to see whether the cards appear in Disk Utility. If they do, can you mount them? Do the cards work on the Mac with another reader (if you have one)?
Could be a faulty reader in your unit.
For M1 Users like myself, NVME hard drives when connected directly to your Mac, verify in System (top left apple System Information) and most times you’ll see the bandwidth up to 5gbps (USB3), sometimes 480 mbps (USB 2.0) but if you use any hub, it will connect to the maximum 10-20gbps (USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt) I guess it’s an Apple flaw
Yeah, I can confirm that as well. I use one of those TB3 ports to power an external TB3 hub giving me 3 more ports while the other is used for a second display.
can't confirm, i guess thats a problem of your NVME drive controller or an incompatibility on either Apples or the USB Chip controller manufacturer. I'm using ROG STRIX ARION with a 2TB NVME Drive which supports USB3.2 and while being directly connected to my M1 Macbook Air through USBC it reports 10GBit/s

Also this is not an Isolated issue, another person confirmed it (THIS VIDEO ASWELL) plus I have 3 different external NVME hard drives (SanDisk, Sabrent & Chinese) and not surprising, all 3 of them have the same experience.
@@rumar4u im sorry, your’e correct in your statement about the nvme Controller, i was thinking about the USB Controller. It would be very interesting to know which nvme to usb adapter youre using and which protocol version it claims to support.
I noticed the SATA KIOIXA drive doesn't connect to anything. It just sits in there. Therefore, how do you power it up? Wouldn't you have to use an internal SATA SSD drive? I don't think my T7 would work here. Sorry for my ignorance here. Help me out, please.
It is a SATA internal SSD, and the connector includes power. T7 connects via USB-C.
After poking around apple forums. I believe the Realtek chipset in the hub is more compatible with the M1 and restoring lost performance

Can't definitively answer point 1, though I suspect the only limit would be physical size. I have seen folks using 2TB drives. If you order on their website it will ship from China to anywhere in the world. Or check Amazon.
Did you connect the hub to a power supply when testing? If so did you get identical speed?

Hey, something off topic here, but I have a question, and I don’t know where else to ask it, couldn’t I just download the Windows for ARM file, create A gnu partition, similar to creating a new partition for macOS Monterey, put the ISO file in this partition, download all windows drivers, if they are not already included, and then, just reboot then choose the partition I’d like to use, similar to bootCamp, on M1? I’m not going to try it though, I’m afraid I might somehow break my drive, or my machine.
I think if it were straightforward lots of people would have done it. You certainly can run Windows for Arm in Parallels Desktop on the M1.
@@ConstantGeekery i’m not talking about parallels, I’m talking about rebooting through a similar process to Boot Camp, but instead of using Boot Camp, you do everything manually, this way you could install windows 10 for ARM, would that work? Refer to my previous comment for extra detail.

Depends what you’re looking to power. I’d suggest if you’re thinking in those orders of magnitude, you probably shouldn’t be plugging whatever it is into a USB hub. 😁

I've not used it much as I sold my Mac Mini. I have been thinking about connecting it to my Mac Studio, but I can't comment much beyond my testing for the review.
I got this hub but it wouldn’t recognize SSD drive and SD card. So i returned it.

CZcamsr-"Kevys RC & Music" says that this hub should have an external power source with a 4 amp charger. Do you agree with that? He says an unpowered hub will fry the USB it connects to on the Mac.-Mini? Is that right?
Other than that he did recommend it as long as it was powered, and NOT as Quiizlab says to hook power cable into the USB-A slot on the Mac-Mini. Please let me know if this is a better way to not fry the Mac-Mini USB slot, Thanks!
I haven't had any issues with mine, but I'm not using much power. I'd recommend plugging it in with an external power supply if you're planning to use spinning disks or peripherals which have a higher power draw. In fairness, it's also possible that two SSDs could require more power than is available via the port, if running at full tilt... but the data transfer rates won't allow them to run like that, and in that case I would expect them to simply not work rather than fry the port. The Mini will have internal protections, so it probably can only happen if the hub is faulty or has been connected incorrectly. I'm not an expert by any means on electrical stuff.
@@ConstantGeekery Thnaks for the honest answer. I do need to have the peripherals in the front of the hub mostly for my thumb drives and my keyboard. I already have 2 external drives in back on an separate USB-C Anker hub so I'll get the one W/O the internal bays. 😀

Do the hub's internal drives disconnect when the mac is on sleep mode?
I'm away at the moment, but I've made a note to test this when I get home.
Mine don't. I have seen disconnects a couple of times, but that happens occasionally with external drives. It used to be that bus-powered external drives would disconnect on sleep, but I thought that got fixed. My hub still has the two SSDs in it, so I don't know whether it might happen with a spinning disk, but then the hub does also have a power input. As always, your mileage may vary.
