- Orbea has just released the brand-new generation of the 2023 Orca. Orbea has been making the Orca since 2003 and now in its 7th generation, it should be rather good. 'Praise The Light' has been the catchphrase for the new bike, with it coming in at a claimed 6.6 kg, but is it any good? Sam Gupta has gone into the depth and scrutinised all the details to try and work out where this new bike actually sits in the market and if it's any good. Would you buy the brand new 2023 Orbea Orca?

#cycling #bikes #bicycles - Sport
It's all going a full circle. Aero bikes & lightweight bikes then aero-lightweight bikes and now the circle is complete. I'd argue as a cycling enthusiast it really doesn't matter which bike you have, just go out and enjoy yourself is all that matters
I've owned a number of different brand bikes in the past and when I recently decided to thin out my collection and go with just a few staple bikes, the ORCA is one of the ones I ended up picking. I've had an ORCA and ORCA Aero in the past and I loved them both. Weight of a bike is only going to waiver a pound or two either way so that doesn't matter to me anymore. It would benefit me to just be more fit. When I decided to settle with the Orbea it was because of it's value, fit, looks, performance, and the fact that it's not another of the Big 3 brands on the road. The fact that I'm Spanish also factors into my bias of the bike. There are probably better bikes out there but I'm not good enough to know the fine differences. If it's lighter, stiffer, faster, who cares?! Honestly, most of us are not in tune or good enough to know the differences. As long as the bike feels and rides good, and you like it, then that's the bike for you. The ORCA and the Tarmac are ones I've always come back to in terms of performance and comfort, but one is definitely more affordable and less common, and that's why I picked the Orbea. The marketing hype is all to sell you a bike. Get a bike you like or you won't ride it.
Thanks for being so honest about your thoughts and not just going along with all the marketing BS.
Yeah - this dude gives real reviews. Makes him more trustworthy
💯
Superb review Sam. Love your insight and questioning analysis. And that you don’t just go along with the hype of a shiny new thing just launched. Chapeau
Curious to learn the type of bottom bracket these bikes maintain
Fair review- particularly around it not being particularly performance oriented. Being light is fun, but it isn’t fast. And also, thats pretty expensive for the top end and the low end isn’t really that light.
Not the bike for me, but I like to see them trying new things
thanks for the no BS review.
Giant nailed this concept and design 3 years ago with the TCR Advanced.
Let's be honest, none of those brands should be able to command that amount of money!
I think they saw the popularity of the Aethos and wanted their own slice of the pie, looks like a great bike.
What is the frame size of the dark blue bike ?
I was always sad they didn’t
t call the Aluminum version the ORAL.
The disc brake haters can't really argue about the weight of bikes now as many are under UCI race limit of 6.8 kgs
I’m tempted to buy a lightweight bike. But instead of spending £10,000 to save 2-3kg over my old Synapse, I could just cut out biscuits, cake & beer for a week.
And you would save money doing so also!
What about the fit people? Not everyone has fat they can just lose.
@@Lotustro I guess they’ll be in the lovely position of just having to spend the £££ 🤷♂️😉
I’d rather just throw 10k$ to save that 2-3kg.
10k is a small price over not having to eat like a diabetic.
Stick with low cal , homemade Valium loaf. Your worries solved.
I have the previous model ORCA and prefer it over this new model... In fact I would rather had seen them change the round handle bars to more aero like bars like Cervelo R5 and improve the seat post clamp design.
I would bet that for the pros it's actually slower than the current model, even for climbing. Not that it matters for us normal people. It looks good and different in a world of dropped seat stays and aero profiles, and to enjoy a bike you dont need any of that
I can save more than a few watts on the flat by tucking my arms in and I don’t need to be aero on the descents.
Saving watts on the climbs - where I am too slow for the 30kph aero advantages they speak of to kick in and where I might be out of he saddle acting as a sail - it’s far more useful to me to save watts on climbs and I’d wager the same for a load of Sunday riders.
is this bike used on the professional scene
It's funny that being able to "customise" the bike by choosing the right stem and bar size etc. is now a "feature".. 🤣 In the past you'd have expected a retailer to swap out these things to fit you. Also, in my case I've always built all of my bikes from framesets anyway. Why not just do that if you want customisation?
Giant TCR SL is the way to go for value
As a TCR owner (Advanced Pro, not SL), I can fully agree with that.
Don’t be a sheep........be different
Giant is the Volkswagon of cycling... Not really the exotique choice tbh
Value? 😂 Like, in save some money. 😂 Life short. Play hard.
Look at the new cube listening slt...
If you’re ok to give away few hundred grams, by taking Ultegra instead of Dura Ace, and few others little « heavier » pieces, you can offer yourself a very lightweight bike for 6.000 £.
Which is a bargain for this price and specs and stand out front its competitors.
It’s already very silly to point out it’s shortcomings in aerodynamics..the buyers of these kind of bike mostly already know what they’re looking for..it’s just a matter of stiffness, ride, and price
10:30 I almost had a heart attack
most bikes are build on Merida Factories - So I Would expect that most knowledge flowes to their bikes and gives Merida best value of all brands besides Canyon.
What is up with that "Mini Hooked Rim" ?? Are tire companies suppose to make a tire for this now?
I dont think any bike costing £12k+ could be described as "for the masses"😮. I've often been tempted by Orbeas, mainly because they are less common than other brands and used to offer better value. I think they will struggle at Specialized/Trek/Cannondale/BMC pricing.
they offer bikes from 3k, you choose what you can afford my guy
@@bernardo9202 my comment still applies, can £3k be described as "for the masses"?!
@@FurySpyder It really does, because that's the market.... if you want to save money... get famous or good at the sport... and get sponsors... if it is expensive... it fucking is and by a lot... but i can't be suprised anymore... that bike i'm mentioning costs Orbea like 1800€ to make, the most... it's one of the most inflated if not the most in the world... but it is waht it is
I am all about climbing. When going downhill, I’m recovering and certainly not aero. Weight and stiffness is all that matters to this middle aged man(Jeebus, did I just say that?) who can actually afford a machine like this.
Build yourself a Winspace SLC for less than half the cost. My 58cm with peddles, cages and integrated bars is 6.8kg.
Is it endurance bike too? Just checked- no internal routing. No thanks
Exciting times - just a horizontal top tube away from being perfect 🙂 #longlivethehorizontaltoptubeandnondroppedseatstays
What a strange question! I have problems to justify spending $12000 for any bike of that caliber. They are not made for the 'masses'. My $4000 Canyon from 2016 weighs just 7kg. and is in top condition. That's value for me.
Sounds like you are reading the marketing release from Orbea.
You would have to be on a very steep hill for 500g to cost you 3 watts.
Lets be honest here even the pros pick light weight over aero when it counts and no matter how much hype they try to force us to consume THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN ,WE CHOOSE LIGHT WEIGHT !!
At least it doesn't have an ISP, thats worth $1k over the Factor.
Apologies for pointing out the fault in an otherwise great video buy it’s 32mm, not 32c.
I think 32c is fine isn't it? The french tire size system looks like 700x32c where the 32 means 32mm and the c means the rim size. It's common for people to shorten to just 32c and leave off the first part. Your way is fine too because we can assume c from context just like we can assume 700.
I am
Orbea fan and owner but must say this video is pure marketing. It is about regular training, not the bike. But if people are happy to spend over 5k euro on a roadbike they should be free to do so 😂
WOW, 12,000.......Now that's a bargain.............not.......
Each year the new release bikes become more expensive. Poor value when you can buy an atheos, giant or supersix evo a bit cheaper. Not by much though…saying that it give it a test ride. The old orbea omx was boring to ride. I hope the BB is threaded not press fit
😂😂😂THE PRICES OF LIGHT BIKES ARE RIDICULOUS! 😂😂😂
Aero Aero Aero!!!!! Oh wait, look at that…. What’s that called? An Aethos? Light and stiff? Yeah screw aero, let’s go light stiff and comfy like it was in 2015….
the price - lol
My SSE is lighter.
Lost the plot!! Cost of bicycles gone crazy. So today I passed people on bikes costing thousands on my Merida 400 rim brakes, disc brakes and bling bling bikes didn't help them. Keep it real!!!
This bike is an easy pass, that skinny top tube looks terrible.
Orca monaca😂
The orca 2022 looks better...
Not for me. I don’t like skinny ones…
Certainly after watching this review, this Orbea doesn't seem that great value.
6 watts is pretty significant, even 3 watts is not negligible
Doesnt add up. Thank you!
Its not the bike it's the rider
If you're over weight ..meaning not under 10 % body fat and have no experience climbing ..bon chance
Not UCI legal bike... So skip..
It is
