- ROAD 23 Southern Laos. It was marked on the map. Google maps recommended it. It should be ok to travel... Yeah!?
That's what we thought... Little did we know, this was The Ho Chi Mihn Trail!

One of the most random adventures I have ever been on in Laos.. Road 23. The Lao people. The Lao villages. The road that just is not there!! Well, parts of the way. A road that follows creek beds. A road that changes every season. A road that can not be tamed. If anything was to go wrong out here... This is ROAD 23. Our 4X4 Adventure in Southern Laos

It is such as venture down to earth, especially when you drove your truck off almost left Nini with the three buffalos, very well informed epic, you too have gone to where 99.99% of Lao people never see before. Thanks 🙏 so much for bringing all of your trips to our living-room.👍👍👍
What precious, precious memories these videos will become for you two. You're doing both, yourselves and us, a great favor by recording and posting these adventures. Thank you so much.
That road was one if the best times I've had in Laos.. so happy I have it for life now, and like you said, others can enjoy it also.
Happy you enjoyed it.
Hope the new year is kind to you, take care.
Thank you 🙏
You met some great people!
What an amazing trip mate. Such a good view watching from home and joining you along this crazy ride! You guys have so much fun on these trips and thanks for bringing us along.
What an Adventure!!.....Something we don’t see everyday. We enjoyed watching it, thrice!! ⭐️✨Count us in 💪
❤❤👍👍
Yet another brilliant 2 videos from you and Neene. Without your sense of adventure I do not believe I, and other Westerners, would have the pleasure or chance to see such wonderful people, wonderful villages, and a way of life in 2021 that most spoilt people could not survive for even a few days. THANK YOU!
Epic adventure.. Wow. Fascinating stuff. 👍👍
This is one of the best and interesting travel / adventure videos posted anywhere. Informative, humourous & interesting viewing. Top effort! Thanks.
Appreciate the feedback Gaz, great to hear you enjoyed it. Cheers🍻
Good to be "travelling" with you whilst not able to travel OS from OZ. Cheers!
Brilliant thank you.
Hi Todd and Neenee, Luv the Documentary concept, you really get a feel of the adventure and way better then ten minutes here and twelve minutes there every couple of days, Neenee needs one of the light weight camping toilet's, the ones that are just a frame and the T seat on top and the biodegradable bag underneath, it all packs down flat.....just saying.........safe journey and safe return...."The Leyland Crew of Laos" Cheers
Great two part video documentary/adventure. The redwood is extremely hard and dense. It was used for wheelbarrow handles and flatbed wheelbarrows up until the early to mid 90's here in the US. Most of ours came from Indonesia until they had flooding and landsides which killed many in Indonesia. The government said the reason for the mass landsides was the deforestation of the redwood. That redwood is so hard you cannot drive a nail threw it unless it's a cut/masonry nail. I myself have not seen redwood from S.E. Asia in many years. That truck is gonna need a spa day. 😂👍
Someone was watching over you when those boys heard you and helped you out of there. Good boys
👍 great 👍
that is some serious road, much respect guys
What an epic adventure. I would pay good money to do that.
Another fun video to watch… thank you.
I think I’ll withdraw Todd Leyland and may upgrade to a Russel Coight status hahaha :-) for leaving Nee Nee in the lurch outside the truck.
It was nice to see you two giving the guys some cash for their time…. Unlike other you tubers who barely say “ thank you”.
Thanks again for the entertainment during Day 8 of our 14 day Sydney lockdown.
Shane & Aoi
Hahaha Coight it is! 😝 We always help out when we can. Those young fellas really saved us big time 🙏
i love the roads. all roads. please visit some cobble roads.
Very exhausting yet creditable journey .good filming.
Nice Adventure Video with Neenee and Todd.
💬...'SABAIDII ' dear Todd & Neenee sis 🙏💥💓 ...
Aaww... always remember me on my childhood over there in Lao 🇱🇦 I really cant wait to come back soon ❣ Dear Todd - and of course Neenee - YOU BOTH bring a bit of home global worldwide 😊👍💻 ... 'Kokhobjai ' for sharing such kinda funny, hilarious and wonderful Videos 😅👋💓
Meeting up with those young men by the river that took you to the ferry was a blessing for sure. Best wishes Bob.
To be honest, it was kinda of spooky they were there. We really did need the help at that precise time.. Made it to the ferry just in time 👌
Seems like thru out S.E.Asia there's always someone there when you need them or a moto repair is never further away than you can push your cycle! Sabaidee Todd and Nene, best of luck in the new year.
What a superb video. My Thai wife and i will be in Laos in February and hopefully will do some traveling Thanks guys
I love seeing the true Laos. Thank you for this video.
Glad you enjoyed this one.. this was an unforgettable trip 👍
That's what I call off the beaten track Todd. Water sure can make a mess as you showed us. Fantastic adventure mate and your wife is such a sport she'd be a fair dinkum Aussie here. Thanks for the journey and the entertainment. Bushyboy Oz.
That she is mate, a great travelling companion! Thanks, great to have you along for the ride Bushy 🍺
Thanks mate great video you always nail the music selection as well

woe that road gets more exciting as you go, nice
Each video I watch is even more awesome than the last one. This one beats them all!
One of my all time favorites John.
Thanks mate
@@NowinLao The scenery and way of life in this video is just the same as that of my in-laws near Phonsavan. I'm sure I will be returning one day. Will keep watching the vids for now.
Great video! Looked like an awesome adventure!
Thx for posting
THIS IS HELPFUL, EDUCATIONAL And you make it engaging n entertaining adventure! TY painful for you though maybe!
Another awesome video. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Texas. Take Care
This road 23 series is next level in so many ways. You two have totally outdone yourselves, getting way out in the scrub there. Your camera work…. wow.
Helloooo Michael, great to have you along mate. Thanks
Second that emotion, been subscribed and watching all your videos for last eight months or so now..I've enjoyed them all but these ho chi might trail videos are both really over the top excellent!! The ending montage on this video is a joy to watch.. perfect music as usual..thanks Todd and Nene for taking me back to the Lao countryside.
onya guys nice adventure,
Best video. I enjoyed every minute. What a ride!
Thanks Gail 😋
Great viewing. Reminded me of the series on Blokesworld when they took a motorcycle trip through Laos and Cambodia.
A nice, funny and interesting video. I will not go there, but if I was a motorbike driver, that would have been fun! :)
First 15-20 minutes, what if sun sets and it turns into a Zoombieland or Ghost town 😱😱😱😱😱.
More than anything, the car needs to be hailed and worshipped. 👏🤙
It certainly did us proud.
2 Thums up on that trip mate
That road is no different from many in Queensland. The 'bush' there is not what I expected. I was imagining more rainforest/jungle. Cheers for the adventure!
Hey Jordan, great you've found the channel. Yeah, like Australia, Laos has a very diverse landscape. Even though you will find some very thick forested type areas in the south, (where this was shot) the rainforest jungles you're thinking of are more to the north. Huge areas of untouched jungle actually. Also, this was filmed in February, which is the dry season here. It would look completely different and vibrant green in the wetter months but it would not be possible to traverse this road in then.
Glad you enjoyed the ride. You should checkout my playlists, you'll find all our travels, North and south on there. Cheers
Wow that's some serious adventure mate. Thanks for the video and keep it coming. I'm addicted to your videos now😂😂😂
Thanks mate 👍
Ah part deux of the grand adventure
Never trust Google is the lesson learned in the adventure
Todd good thing u have 4 wheel drive !
Very fortunate the locals were around
The river cruise was cool
If it wasn't for Google we would never have had such an adventure. Still to this day my favorite 👌😁
Attapeu was definitely a city on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a very dangerous area for US aircraft, the NVA had a lot of anti aircraft guns in this area
during the war
What a great life there
Wow !! epic adventure ,that was very entertaining. Thanks Todd and Neenee Cheers ...Kenno...West Aust
Loved that road! Can't wait to do it again in the Troopy 👍
@@NowinLao I was thinking about that Todd. ( Troopy ) I did see the odd video ( recent as 2 years) when I first started watching you ,with the troopy. I thought the ute did you well, but the 6 cyld diesel Tojo will eat that track up 👌
Wow!!! you make some top videos Todd nice epic adventure .
Cheers mate 😁👍
Yes the adventure of a life time, wow nat gio would love that adventure thanks for sharing it, beer time after that you bet
It certainly is beer time Jenny... Incredible adventure!
That's what you call an adventure!!!! Damn! So.... You're saying not a good road for the Corvette huh? 555.
What deal ...$5 for a sunset cruise! I bet you felt really relaxed getting across that river and getting that "road" behind you. Thanks for sharing brother
Jack it up a good 10 inches ya should be right mate. Man, you don't know how much of a relief it was to see that graded dirt road on the other side. I thought we still had another 20kms of bush track to go...in the dark!
Gonna try and suss out some accom in that riverside village where the ferry was. Would be a great overnight stay and have time to check out the old destroyed bridges. Beautiful spot there by the water. Cheers mate
@@NowinLao looks like it was a beautiful but scary drive. For sure you are hitting the out of the way places! Funny to see the kids running from you. Most likely the first time most of those people have ever seen farang. "There goes the neighborhood" hahahaha 🤣
U are Very Happy and this is your own decision 👌
That was some major bush driving mate!! damn crazy roads, but to me are dirt paths. That last stretch was not a road and then to a drop off with a bridge that was nothing but columns in the river. I think we are a lot alike Todd, my wife said we have a lot in common and do the same crazy things and leave our wives when they a taking a leak hahaha. I laughed my ass off when you started driving and she was to hell with you I am not finishing taking a leak thinking you would drive off again. Did that to my wife many times just playing around. She always calls me an asshole for doing it, but at least I get a laugh at it hahaha. I really enjoyed these 2 part videos, I was thinking when you stopped and was talking to one group passing by, the driver looked like he wanted to cut you up for dinner but the rest were friendly and talking, I was like wow that guy did not like you haha. The good thing is you got through, the bad part is your paint is wasted and you had a lot of dents plus I am shocked you have your runners still. Cleaning the engine and inside the cab must of been rough unless you paid someone to clean it. Yeah what a beating the truck took and Neenee, the question is how did you like the beating mate. Not like the outback or is it? I know you can drive all day and not see one car, truck, or person all day driving through the bush or across country. Thanks for the kick ass video my friend, I really enjoyed it and finally getting my wife to watch your videos. peace brother.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🚨🚧🧭🧭🧭area we on the right road🧭🧭🧭🚧🚨
That's my type of road...... Hope I can point the bike down it some time...
Excellent road for a bike adventure 👌
You got to love a good adventure. Sun was setting as the ferry crossed the river.
These are so interesting, keep up the amazing work...
Most enjoyable Todd and Neenee. Thank you for sharing with us all 🙏
Yes - that's what I'd call an adventure. Have a beer Lao!
I said at the start of these two videos I wouldn't travel that road again... I'm not so sure now. Certainly one of the highlights of my time in Laos 🍻
@@NowinLao now you know, you have to do that again. I would love to do that.
@@NowinLao Yes, an epic journey that's on my bucket list! A Secret War...
Great adventure. Greetings from Germany
@@jenslauer3094 Sabaidee Jens 🙏
Them 2 vids are just brilliant !! You did the right thing in not over editing them, from my seat the time passed real quick as it wasnt disjointed at all. When your in the right kind of environment, these "longer" vids are just the job - dont stop doing them mate, they make GREAT viewing. Fk me im glad I found your channel, and I feel real bad about not doing the same from my time getting to know the real Thailand.
Well this has it all......traditional Lao culture, adventure , humour.......you topped them all with this one Todd I reckon......wonderful! 👍👍😊😊
Videos like this just can not be cut up to fit into a normal vlog size video. It all needs to be shown, and i'm glad to see so many of you enjoyed these last two videos. Thank you Peter, glad you enjoyed mate 🙏
8:55 This part of Laos is probably the hottest region of the country that's a dog takes a dip to cool off....hehe:)
Haha you know I had no idea that dog was behind me until I sat down to edit this...
wonderful video😆
Thanks for sharing, this is just incredibly inspiring!
That could be a Queensland coastal bush track, except for the Laos villagers.
Mint vid.
You deserve everything mate
Cheers mate 🍻
what an amazing adventure your having..... thx for sharing and look forward to the next one :)
💯💙🔥👍
What a great journey. Beautiful villages with friendly people like most anywhere in Laos. I would like to do this route by motorcycle. Todd, Do you happen to know whether they sold bottles of petrol in those villages along the way. Thanks and great work!
Cheers mate.. yeah there was a couple of places with the red and green fuel bottles out the front 👌
Lucky those boys found you!
Malcolm Douglas - no road really lol - 😂 - those 3 guys am just b4 the ferry - man - saviours 🙏 - nice to hear - Graeme Connors during the end highlights - a true adventure - well done & Thanks for sharing 🇦🇺👌🍻👍😎🙏
They truly were Ant, we would've been stuffed without them. Kind of weird how they were there when we really needed them. Probably be camped back up at that timber blokes place for the night. I can't imagine the ferry operates after sunset. Thanks for coming along mate 🍺
red wood is getting rare, that lot of redwood will be worth thousands.
Cannot believe you two dare to travel through this kind of road....you are brave...
Haha I was just following the well marked road on google maps... I did not expect it to be a goat track... But heck it was fun! 😀👍
@@NowinLao Interesting though that it is Hochimin Trail.
like you said back home if someone walked through your yard we would chase them with a Axe 5555
Gee that was good Todd and Neenee. Thank you both.
Thanks Wally 😉
Wow this video took me back to my childhood memories, I was mesmerized! I’ve been watching your videos for a long time, but this is my first comment. Thank you for the great content!
Helloooo Anita! Great to have you along for the ride, and happy to see this video has enticed a comment out of you. Ahh Laos.. such a wonder place to travel, especially away from the tourist areas. The people are so welcoming, helpful and happy. Thank you. Kop Jai der 🙏
That is truly an epic adventure.
If envy is really a sin, I'm going to hell.
I really can wait to get back to SE Asia,
Southern Mexico is very much fun but,
Asia is where I long to be.
How much footage did you get on that little
Sunday drive??
Thank both of you two for all of the videos
that keep me entertained.
Keep up the great work.
Glad you enjoyed it. Haha this little Sunday drive thru the South...I think we left Vientiane on the 7th of February and returned on the 19th February. Tgat should give you a good idea of how much footage we took. I upload 3 videos a week and I still have a few more videos to edit from that trip... nearly 6 months later lol
Granted there has been daily life videos and others mixed throughout our travel videos.
Thanks for tagging along ✌
What an adventure guy's, treasured memories forever, Lao people so friendly and helpful, luv the Aussie humour, priceless, nee nee super star , so funny ❤, 🙏 .
After watching Part One it crossed my mind as to whether you had considered UXO.....
My ring would have been twitching like a mad thing (aka anxiety level) wondering what I was going (or if ) to find as a ferry at the river! I guess that's the end of your adventure touring :-) Cracking vids Todd, almost wish I had been there.
So so good! Really enjoyed this adventure! Kia kaha from NZ
Another Kiwi! Hey Patricia... I have so many awesome En Zed viewers, so cool. Thank you
Todd,,my bro,,that was epic! When you let us know that the track was actually part of Uncle Ho's trail,,I started wondering about unexploded bombs too. You definitely passed thru areas that have never been cleared. I actually didn't think the road was horrid,,just kind of fun. What you saw and experienced along there was amazing. The people you and Neenee met and spoke with,,,those boys at the river definitely saved your asses there. Just another example of kind ,lovely Lao people. The last village before the river,,some cool houses in the middle of nowhere. That one newish house and big barn or shed,,I coulda lived there lol. The last thought I had before I say g'night is this. There were people in those villages,,Neenee's age and older,,whose last contact with anything farang,,easily could have been the silver underbelly of B-52's or other military aircraft. This was a great pair of vids Todd,,thank you for putting these up. If I'm ever able to make the trip,,,I'd like to ride that road. Anyway ,stay safe ,Ttyl,,,Marlon
If you ever make it here, I'll take you along that road myself! Stay in that riverside village for a night and checkout the ruins of the old bridge that was destroyed in the war. 🍺😉👍
@@NowinLao cool as blue fuck lol
8:51 HAHA. Rover is Hong Kadong Gadeer!
Bloody hot!
Great Video guys! Watching from the land of the Cherokees. I enjoyed your opening song! Some of the trails reminds me of some of our roads. haha It's good thing Neenee didn't have to use pay toilets, otherwise you would have to give her some big BUCKS! Hahaha
Hahaha yeah she'd cost me a fortune mate! Take care mate and thanks for watching
Maybe you could make a trip up road/route 12 to Mu Gia Pass some time.It was the main infiltration route into Laos the NVA took on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Some of the photos on google maps looks beautiful.
I followed road 23 on google maps and for all the further I can zoom in I could see it wasn't paved and probably would be sketchy in places with a stock vehicle from the telltale signs of huge erosion.
IDK if you have any equipment you take along but a good shovel (even entrenching tool),small pick,a few tow (recovery) straps,a hi-lift jack, and a moderate to heavy duty come-along (hand winch) would be a good thing to have along on any trip.
I love that shit , the road less traveled. I got really lost using google maps in Uganda to the point I was rock hoping in a Toyota corona 😂👍🏿
What was that hard wood they had? Beautiful colour
Rock wood 😉
You don’t need 4x4 for these type of road, you need monster truck or rice tractor.
Laos how have their own Burke and Wills.
Very surprised we never seen some camels. They would've fit into some of that landscape 🐪🌴
It would be the best I have seen better than the Australian roads all natural 🙏👍
I was a delivery drive for in 35 years ,the only time I used Google maps was the last 2 years with all these new suburbs popping up I had to. I wouldn't know how to get around Sydney these days , I hope they don't change the way to the pub haaaa
Delivery driver for 35 years, are you alright Mate? Great beard Man
@@tummytalk605 yeah loved every minute of it, on my own ,tunes pumpin, I new where all the best sandwich shops in Sydney were , I got to know a few cops as well .haaa
@@gordo191 Damn Gordo you is real
And that’s the HCT….imagine all the fighting that took place during the war on that same road…..probably much more green at the time…obliterated by bombing raids and subsequent droughts clear it up a bit but imagine….and did u ever ask about unexploded ordinance along that road…lol…uh just heard u mentioning that..lol
You know Craig, it wasn't until a couple of days ago that I learnt road 23 was part of the HCT. At the time we just thought it was another dodgy road.
we had a bunch of extremely hot weather...then next was extreme thunderstorms following month... nice beautiful ppL Lao.. I think they R the most calm , traditional, secure about their culture type ppL & the prettiest ppL in SEA... & good at traditional handicrafts.. even just for small tiny stuffs ... :)) = true pride.. awesome
