  • Hooch, Mountain Dew, Homebrew, Shiny, White Lightning. It all goes by another name - Moonshine, and it made millions for rural bootleggers during prohibition. Today on Nutty History, we’re shining the light on the illegal spirit and the people who devoted their lives to its dangerous and daring trade across the United States. Unlike Josh and Big Chuck, we're gonna show show you how moonshiners stayed out of the limelight and evaded police. Also, stay tuned to learn who the first NASCAR drivers were!

Literally no one can do that. And don’t encourage it. It will kill you. No one sells moonshine @ 190 proof. It would be too expensive and undrinksble. Most m/s is tempered to 90-120. It is a cleaner better Spirit and is basically white dog whiskey. Unaged bourbon. I’ve been doing this for 35 years.

My mom and aunt were from Chattanooga Tennessee. Any time they would go visit they always managed to bring home the real thing. Usually procured from the sheriff. Anytime we would have a family get together it was always great fun to give the new comer, someone's boyfriend or girlfriend etc., the first shot. Once it high bottom they're face would turn red. So many times they thought they could handle it. Usually one shot was all it took. I still have a hand written recipe and diagram on how to make it and build the still. Never have attempted though. Maybe some day.

"Farmers who often would resort to violence and intimidation" i mean it's literally the harsh frontier and a bunch of men in fancy clothing and jewelry come and say "for no reason other than we said so, give us half of your alcohol/money" i mean what else were they supposed to do? Ask them nicely to leave them alone? What a terrible way to start a video about people who were simply exercising their right to exist and create a product that hasn't been taxed for thousands of years.

@@EmeraldForester777 i think you are really fucking missing the point. A bunch of people who have lived harsh lives, most of them providing/creating everything they need themselves on a brutal frontier, among those is alcohol: a product that has been made by private citizens for private trade since recorded human history and you're telling me that these people who have lived these harsh lives providing for themselves are NOT justified in protecting their livelihood from a bunch of men in fancy suits that were rarely even from their own state, being paid in money that is literally extorted from them and are there to literally, by force, either take their money or products. You have to got to be fucking kidding me. How pathetic, how absolutely weak of a human being could you be to POSSIBLY justify that?

@@EmeraldForester777 what about the massive federal organization funded through money stolen from the people under threat of imprisonment or death that would routinely resort to violence and intimidation towards people that were simply brewing a bit of alcohol for trade? Huh? With how much you're bootlicking federal tax agents from a time where it's well documented they were corrupt as hell and beat and killed a lot of innocent farmers, It's pretty obvious you're one of those types of people that could look at a video of a cop killing an 11 year old unarmed black kid and instinctively defend the cop no matter what.

I so far have really enjoyed this channel. The one thing that bothers me is when you don't get it right or care to find out. Popcorn Sutton indeed committed suicide, but not to avoid incarceration. When you are incarcerated you're not allowed to smoke. He killed himself for that awful reason. He couldn't or wouldn't give up nicotine.

It was called hooch, or just plain moonshine in Lee Co Ky. It killed 5 poker players one night, including a relative in the 1970’s. Hooch became to be known as poison made by amateurs and it was shunned for decades in this part of Ky. Marijuana replaced hooch, and later, the dry counties lost the war against alcohol. The only bootleggers left will sell beer after hours with a mark up. I used to load and unload beer for bootleggers and I used to house-sit for 2 of them during their runs, with a loaded shotgun nearby and I never drank or smoked back then.

Making moonshine ISN'T that dangerous as this video may have conveyed.
Yes high proof booze is flammable but you'd have to be pretty careless to catch a building on fire & to cause an explosion you'd have to be the dumbest person in the state to pull that off.
