  • In Cameroon, only 2% of the roads have been asphalted. All of the country's inhabitants rely on the Clandos' taxi services, they have no other choice. The country has no railway and taking airplanes is both too expensive and too dangerous.
    00:00 Cameroon's bravest drivers are known as "Clandos". They're illegal cabs, and they're the only ones allowed to drive on Cameroon's entire road network, one of the worst on the African continent.
    06:20 Thanks to this, they have a stranglehold on transport in Cameroon, despite the government's best efforts.
    00:20 Some routes cross the territory of the Pygmies, a people of Central Africa.
    17:30 When goods transports have accidents, villagers loot the cargo
    19:18 The loaders in the basalt mines work until they're exhausted, and even the children there have to work in the quarries to go to school.
    23:49 With the limited means available, the "Clandos" are forced to drive with cars fit for the scrap heap.
    29:59 Overloaded vans are also subject to road problems.
    35:35 Mireille works for an NGO trying to preserve the Pygmé people who live close to nature in the equatorial forests.
    41:33 Some mountain towns are inaccessible during the rainy season.
    49:02 Even the region's capital has become a ghost town as the population flees.

    Watching this documentary today has made me learn more about other parts of Cameroon I have not been to. The road challenge is almost same everywhere from township to the hinterlands. I come from Mbot in Nkambe, Donga Mantung Division of the North West Region. I was so touch about the educational aspect of the children. Between 2013 and 2016, I made enormous effort to support education for the underprivileged especially in local communities. It was my dream that local areas like Yoko and Linte exposed in this documentary would be possible target but the Crisis raging since 2016 has send some of us off the country and even when you come back you do not feel safe to travel anywhere around the country. However, I still look forward to meeting like minded people so we can work together for the development of the young by supporting their education and engage in other community development projects that meets their social needs. Kudos to the team that made this documentary and looking forward to meeting you someday. Thank you again.

    There’s a sad irony in that the children that must break rocks to pay for their schooling value it much more than many in my country who receive it for “free”. Here it can even be viewed as a form of persecution to be forced to go to school and those who need it most often cling to their ignorance like a crucifix in the storm. Education is a form of freedom and these children know that. It would appear that you often cease to value that which you don’t pay directly for. I am full of admiration for the parents too who have such aspirations for their children and feed their ambition. Love and respect from me.

    • @FigaroHey
      @FigaroHey Před rokem

      I mean... Yeah? I was thinking just the same thing. A bus doesn't has a certain number of miles on it - we retire it. Those people would get 50 years out of it and then recycle the parts. Donate one to each village along a road so they can drive their people to the next village and back or people can take one bus after another for the same as the cost of one of those 'taxis'. If every village had a bus, they would maintain the roads just to keep the busses coming and the next bunch of travellers (from the previous village, previous bus) moving along the links in the chain. Villagers themselves could ride free to the next village - after that, on the next village's bus - they'd have to pay the rest of the way to their destination, link by link, bus by bus. Every village would have a source of transport and a source of income from one donated bus.

    If only the government and the politicians wake up from their greed and power hunger. These neglected people are always wide awake and are struggling every single day to make their living in a very harsh conditions. My heart goes out to these brothers and sisters.
