The Factory Model of Schooling: A Critique of Our Schools

  • An effort to understand the inherent flaws in our schooling system which halts all creativity in children. No comprehensive solution provided. Why? because the greatest problem is to be unaware of the problem. If we truly contemplate the problem, solution isn't farfetched.

    My dad was a teacher, and I never had vacations because we would study all summer. When I was in third grade, one of his friends wanted his son to have tuition with me. My father didn’t want to say no, but the guy sent his kid over the next day anyway. My dad's strategy was to make the kid stop coming over for the studies. So on the first day, for my minor spelling mistake, my father beat me so harshly that the other kid got scared and never came back. Later, the kid told everyone at school what happened. I still remember feeling teary in front of my friends while saying it was no big deal.
    When I finished sixth grade, my dad wanted me to join his 10th-grade math private tuition classes. I had no idea what I was learning, so I just complied with whatever he asked me to do. One day, he gave a problem to the whole class to solve, and later asked me to show if I had the solution. I had nothing written down, as it was only my second or third day in the middle of the syllabus he was teaching. Next thing, he slapped me so hard…. I almost fell on the floor. The scar still remains with me to this day. I studied the whole night that day just to prepare in advance, whatever math problem he could give me, ofc just to avoid getting embarrassed again. The next day, as I predicted, he called me to check whether I solved the problem this time. Too bad for him..I already had it solved. He was amused that I was able to get it done, only to shamelessly take the credit for my hard work and to justify that the beating was necessary.
    There are many other incidents like these, but in summary, I was always a dummy for him to hit and to set example by putting fear in others. I live a better life now and make good money, but every now and then I wake up in the middle of the night from a dream where he was physically and verbally abusing me. I’m over 30 now, and I haven’t contacted him in the last 10 years. We always talk about men committing crimes against women, but we rarely talk about men committing crimes against men. The amount of control, manipulation, and abuse I have gone through, I doubt many would have survived. There is nothing worse than growing up feeling that you’re the reason why your parents don’t love you, and it's embarrassing to talk about - you feel alone. I turned out to be a stronger version of me who started resistance against him since I hit puberty. I took life decisions on my own and gained financial independence from him - just to move far far away from him where he can’t reach me.
    Edit: He died in 2022. A part of me is relieved.

    Muzammil Sir, you are the only person in Pakistan I have ever seen who raises such huge issues. Here I'm writing not about this particular issue, but your overall effort. At first I doubted whatever you said in your videos, thinking are things this much bad, or is this person exaggerating conditions just for the sake of popularity. Though I am not very educated and not critical thinker, but after much, much thought, I realized that whatever you were saying is true. And everyone can understand you, there is no need of any rocket science to understand what you are saying.
    But, I cannot help it but become sad after watching each of your videos because all address very bad almost hopeless issues. This gives an overall negative tone to your videos. My humble request is that though there are many problems in this country, but we still have a lot to celebrate. From the city of lights, to Gwadar's potential, to Balochi culture, to Punjab, heart of Pakistan Lahore, The Capital city, to poets, to our legends, to the amazing fairylands of Gilgit Baltistan, to the huge Mountains, to our sports everything..So if ever you set eyes on this comment I request you to also make videos about the good things, and the other side of the coin. I am sure you have also a thousands of content about the good things. I don't want to see you become just symbol of sad news. You are the finest critic of our land. You are legend and we really want you as an all round leader.

    My brother and me would do paintings, artwork after we finished our school homework. Still my brother do paintings n I do rangolis.
    The reason is we focused on career as well as our interests ; we are blessed with supportive parents and teachers.
    We did got bashed by our Chacha but it didn't left any scar cz we knew it's for our good.

    Public schools created in the interests of industrialization. Schools divide the curriculum into specialist segments: some teachers install math and others install history. They arrange the day into standard units of time, marked out by the ringing of bells, much like a factory announcing the beginning of the workday and the end of breaks. Students are educated in batches, according to age, as if the most important thing they have in common is their date of manufacture. They are given standardized tests at set points and compared with each other before being sent out onto the market. I realize this isn’t an exact analogy and that it ignores many of the subtleties of the system, but it is close enough. KEN ROBINSON

    I had already realized in my childhood that there was something wrong with education. I was 8 years old in class 3. There was a pointless topic, a story about animals in which there was a monkey who was a musician. Whenever he played the guitar in front of anyone, they would automatically start dancing. While memorizing about 5 questions about it, I was thinking what benefit I would gain from memorizing questions about such a pointless story. If I asked any elder about something serious, I would get scolded for trying to escape from studying. Today, it has been proven that I was thinking correctly at that early age. Hats off to Muzammil bhai for raising this issue.Then, at the age of 18 after completing my intermediate education, I pursued my passion and took a 2-year multimedia course, which revealed to me that even just 2 years of learning could be very impactful, considering the wasted 18 years in so-called education. Today, I am happy to be running a department as a senior editor and animator.

    Excellent analysis! Mashallah! It breaks my heart as a teacher when I hear experiences like yours. Sadly they are all too comment across the world for exactly the reasons you have presented here. Education should open people up to what is inside them. Learning is about curiosity, questioning and pushing boundaries. Children are not empty mugs waiting for a teacher's jug to fill them up. Childhood is not just a preparation stage for adulthood but rather an important phase of human development. Your perspective is closely related to Sir Ken Robinson and Michael Fielding of England. Education is a public good and should be for itself and not to feed industry. Michel Foucault is right schools are run like prisons and this is unacceptable in the 21st C. England me bhi kuch behtar nahi hai. Aap jo kehe rehe hain woh mera mulk me bhi most logoin ko samajh nahi aata. Hum sub milkey kehe te rehain so shiyad log sooney??? Keep going, your work is important. 👏

      @MeemBaay111 Před 2 lety +1

      @@prashantp2029 Thank you for your question. This is what I think and try to do, in a restricted neoliberal system. Schools should be about fostering all kinds of talents to develop. They should be about motivating students to learn not frightening them into it. Of course, academic learning is important and should feature in any curriculum but not at the expense of computing, the arts, science, history, politics the law, human rights, the environment, business and enterprise and public services. it should encourage students to follow their natural aptitudes, encourage critically and questioning of the world as it is as this is the basis of progress and development. The memorisation of facts as a basis for education is defunct because google, the internet and technologies have made it totally unnecessary. Students don't need teachers to teach them facts anymore in a modern education system. Teachers are needed to teach young people to be confident humans that are all differently qualified to meet the challenges of the 21st C. I hope this is helpful
