In this video, weâre going to talk about the best foods for a recovering alcoholic.
What health issues are a recovering alcoholic most likely dealing with?
âą Liver damage
âą Inflammation
âą Cirrhosis
âą Nutritional deficiencies
The best foods for a recovering alcoholic:
1. Cruciferous vegetables
2. Shellfish
3. Sunflower seeds/nutritional yeast
4. Fish-omega 3 fatty acids
5. Large salads
A recovering alcoholic should also try doing intermittent fasting (1-2 meals a day) as well as periodic fasting. You want to do intermittent fasting to create autophagy, which will clean up old damaged proteins and turn them into healthy new amino acids. This happens roughly around 18 hours a day of fasting. Periodic fasting will also help speed up your results.
Kombucha tea is a really good substitute for beer or wine. Just be sure itâs the one with the lowest amount of sugar. Itâs similar to alcohol in that it can help you feel more relaxed and calm. It does have a very small amount of alcohol, but itâs an insignificant amount that should not cause problems.
If you're a recovering alcoholic and you want to take this to the next level, you may want to try these nutrients:
âą Cysteine
âą Glycine
âą Glutamine
âą NAC
âą Vitamin C
âą Zinc
âą B-vitamins
âą Milk thistle

I'm one month and 2 days sober. I'm never going back again.
Iâll be a week dry tomorrow. Iâm really obese also (35-40 % body fat) and I started IF (20 hrs a day) speed walking at least an hour a day,Eating healthy keto unprocessed foods, & Drinking plenty of water. I already feel amazing. More clear minded, less depressed , no anxiety at all. I finally see alcohol for what it is; itâs a poison.
Fab how are you doing now?
I relapsed on alcohol & went to rehab for 2 months. I was down to 228 before I went in (started at 300). I gained like 30 pounds when I was in there so now Iâm working that off. Iâll update whenever I get down to 200!
â@@thatdudekyle5690 So sorry you had a setback. One day at a time. I was researching Nutritional Yeast which is loaded with B vitamins and I like to read the reviews. One comment really stuck with me. It was a woman who said she was an alcoholic along with her father and several siblings. She said her father was in his 60s and an alcoholic since a teenager as was his father and siblings. She said she began taking the nutritional yeast (the non-fortified brand, I wish I could remember which brand). She noticed her cravings for alcohol started to become less and less. Finally, she was free from alcohol addiction. She got her dad and siblings to try it and they got the same results. It would be worth a shot. Couldn't hurt. Also research B1 deficiency. Checkout Dr. Berg and EOnutrition on youtube. I wish you all the best.
How are you doing now after rehab? Fingers crossed
Last post was 4 months ago. Hope youâre beating itâ€ïžđđ
I used to weigh 350lbs and now am 170, from practicing keto and intermittent fasting recommended by dr berg.
Theres nothing that you will not cover, you are such a legend Dr Berg and so very muched loved and appreciated by so many.
Don't forget to look into the psychological factors that cause you to engage in self-destructive behaviours. I didn't see great improvement from alcoholism until I did work on dismantling my dysfunctional belief systems. A book I recommend any substance addict look into is Healing the Shame that Binds You by John Bradshaw.
Thank you!
Thanks! Great point

No worries, all the best.
Thank You !!!! For the info!!!!

I'm only 4 days clean of alcohol. This is what I need to do. Thanks
Hope you are hanging on. Stressful times can make this challenging. Sending love and prayers

@@miffedmicrobiologist6595 Instead of "hanging on", take the death grip off the steering wheel. You'll get instant relief...it's called "surrendering". Then get busy living differently!
Did it work for you
Great video. I quit drinking 21 days ago. Iâm sure my body needs healing.
How has your sobriety journey been?
I am a clinical therapist and I think nutrition is vital for my clients. I work in a treatment center and feel itâs important to heal bodies physically, emotionally and mentally....thank you for this.
Absolutely! Body, Mind, Spirit all need to be healthy and in sync for a chance at healing and also for a possibility of having a fulfilling life! You are a good therapist!
I've followed clean keto for over a year and didn't drink anything but recently I tried to drink and always got violently got sick like I'd been poisoned! Just another awesome side effect of keto lifestyle!
Who is not an alcoholic and still watching?
I would also be helpful for people with non alcoholic fatty liver disease

Addiction is a massive subject that will help alot of people. Weed, alcohol and ecstacy. I hope to see more this! Thankyou!
Weed does not belong on that list unless your insinuating the CBD/GOV brandđđŻ
@@stratepaper8508 yer it does loads of people are addicted to weed
I believe this video addresses the effects alcohol has on the body. I don't think this is addressing addiction necessarily. Therefore the information provided has nothing to do with the other substances you listed.
@@stratepaper8508 weed definitely belongs on the list
@@bigjohnson9606 i find it more to be an obsession
Thank you for this video. A lot of people could/would stay away from alcohol in the first place, would they know that their depression stems from severe nutrient deficiencies, rather than from daily stress. It's a little bit of irony.
Foods:
1. cruciferous vegetables
2. shellfish
3. sunflower seeds /nutritional yeast
4. fish - omega 3
5. large salads
Practice:
IF (intermittent fasting) 1-2 meals/day
This sounds really effective, Dr. Berg, for any addiction and liver issues. Thank you, Dr. Berg!
Hi, thank you so much for this video! I celebrated 3 years sobriety on Jan 5. I was a daily drinker for a decade. In sobriety I've embraced health and wellbeing, and have changed my diet and quit smoking. I've been keto for the last 6 weeks, and feel the best I ever have. Curious as to how long it takes for my body/liver takes to heal itself?
Gail Myles not over night but Iâd get tests done at the doctor to be sure how recovered you are. I think after 3 years youâre good to go. Iâd say 6 months to a year of sobriety is enough for the average to get to full health.
Thatâs awesome! I had 3 years yesterday. I too quit smoking after about 10 months into my journey. đ
@@jennwatson74 that's so great. Best thing we've ever done for ourselves! Happy birthday đ
I'd say that your liver would almost be completely healed by now
Daily drinking is tough on the body! Congrats !
32 years sober, chocolate. If you were an alcoholic youâd understand. Love your show.
Too much of anything is bad.
Just taking a break from Drinking, became just too much right now. Couple years ago *I lost 100 pounds on Keto and IF* but I was also drinking my favorite Vodka during that, it was good at helping pass the hunger too. Blood test results showed exactly what Dr. Berg said would deplete in my body, oddly enough my liver wasn't a concern since I had lost all that weight at that moment. But during this "break" Dr. Berg uploaded this and I thought maybe I should go a little longer than a simple break now that I see substitutes and repair methods.
This upload was good timing for me. Thank you.
Jolly Joel damn I thought I was the only one I lost 45 pounds in 3 months on Keto and IF but I was drinking lots of alcohol gonna use these steps to help recover from all that and hopefully there was no major or permanent damage
Dr. Berg, You're so awesome for helping so many different people! I can't say enough good things about you! Hats off to you and may God bless you Sir! Have a fabulous new year and brand new decade! Peace.
Please do more on this subject Dr.Berg thank you.
Keto and fasting is vital for my sobriety. 1/2 C of liquor rocks my ketosis for a week plus just feeling sluggish and depressed.
Keto For Life!
Thank you very much!! You are making a better world
This is great info to help with the "Asian Flush" as well. I use the Redee Patch during the rare occasions when I drink -and it works AMAZINGLY well. I was surprised to see that it's ingredient list is very similar to your nutrients list on the left side. It makes total sense to me now -how & why the patch works, after your explanation of what the ingredients actually do. Thanks for another great video!! Your videos are the best!!
Great advice for the most part! My only concern is most alcohols have underlying blood sugar issues, and if intermittent fasting is introduced in the first month or so after quitting drinking, they're likely to have terrible withdraws and hypoglycemic episodes.
My boyfriend had problems with alcohol. He's almost one year sober now. I'm going to add those to our diet. Almost have everything except sunflower seeds and nutritional yeast so far
Good gf
@@iiGotDaGrenade thank you. I try.
HeÂŽs my husband now. ^^
Have a nice day !

Best one, that list on the left is awesome, not just for alcoholics but for everyone
Dr Berg forgot to mention the most important greens broccoli sprouts. Which are the best things for detox and increase glutathione
Very usefulđđđ I was completely clueless coming out of the hospital on what to eat
Thank you so much dr berg. Isn't choline also a good thing for the liver?
Thanks Dr. Eric B. really useful video đ
Thanks so much D.berg great đ videos.
This here just plain good prescription not just for âalcoholicsâ but for ANYONE who consumes alcohol beverages
I have been drinking heavily since I was 14. I'm 60 now and still drinking 20 to 40 beer a week. 40 years ago I was a drinker but also a vitamin taker. I remember B1. I tried different b complex and found Jameson Power for Men the best that had a high B1 dosage. It is discontinued now. I like drinking and have managed my alcoholism well and balanced it with my job and personal life. I also had a fast food diet and a high stress job as a computer systems broker. I am still going, however, my sister has stage 3 cirrhosis. She likes cakes and cookies but never had a drink of alcohol in her life. She will not listen about vitamins and goes to her doctor to get more and more banding of the veins. Sad. I ordered your gallbladder and heart pills, the ingredients seem perfect for me at this stage of my life. Thank you for making them. I am 60 and as bad as it sound for me to say I don't look it. From the very beginning I have been taking a supplement that I know has helped me enjoy alcohol and live a healthy life ... one gram of alpha lipoic acid a day.
Donât u worry about the damages on your body? Iâm 22 and struggle with alcoholism but I want to heal my body and donât know how
Try Kudzu. It helps you not want to drink as much. It worked great for me!
I love this, I'm going to try this out! ..yum....but all his ingredients in one salad!!! Wish me luck this f,,,,ing pandemic has been draining. Keep strong my fellow Canadians
Interesting topic, really like it. Thumbs up and a Happy Year Dr.
Hi Dr. Berg! Thank you! I have a question for you: how much nutricional yeast should a healthy person take per day? Thank you!
Thank you for this, I am a recovering alcoholic and am very glad for this info. FYI: I'm sure what you say about Kombucha is correct, but almost all AA groups and sponsors would say that any amount of alcohol, no matter how small, is not allowed and would be a possible relapse. It's just best not to tempt fate and cause a problem with what is acceptable.
AA is just one path to recovery - a good one at that, but certainly not the only path
Kombucha legit has such a small amount you wonât feel a thingâŠ.itâs like one of those 0.5% type of grocery store beers where you would need to drink 10 to even equal 1 beer thatâs how insignificant he means
Great video Doc. Some great tips here. Even us so called moderate drinkers, alcohol consumption can creep up on us. I'm on day two of my 30 day non drinking challenge. Maybe it will be 60, 90, 120..... Wish me luck.
I am on day 8 of my 100 day non drinking challenge ... just to clean the liver and the body in general. Feeling great. You can do it!

@@lilbucko, yesterday "was to be" my first of 90. Well, today, it shall be!
I used to scoff at the precut veggies in the produce section but now I get it. It's time consuming to meal prep all the time and takeout salads get expensive so it's nice to grab ready to go veggies to eat at work. Sometimes it's the only way I'll get enough veggies for the day.
Thank you for all your help Dr.
You're very welcome.

Excellent stuff :-) In addition to your recommendations, I take Pomegranate, and Choline. Great video :-)
Thanks for the information; to keep in mind, for some people in recovery alcohol "simulates" like Kombucha (or near beer) can be a trigger.
LGlutamine and large dose fish oil with a squirt of lemon juice what I've been doing for a few mornings in a row. Desire low, been stressed not much thought of alcohol.

Pablo Insano i was really interested since a batchmate of mine recently died because of it at the age of 26 and I really didnât know what input I could have given them and if it was going to be helpful.
If you stop early enough and with that diet sure, but thatâs before it gets advanced enough
Charlie Dallachie : yes, even Berg say there is a point where transplant is the only option...unfortunately, many die while waiting for the organ đ„ș

Thank You Dr. Berg. I am consuming lots of cruciferous and fasting. I will mix in the supplements and vitamins. You're the best.
Me too. Choline and milkthistle and lots of spinach, brocoli and kale. I've also been and ordered vitamin B1 (thiamine) and have tried to cut high salt foods. I'm quite inconsistent due to my job and family situation but I think I'm done with booze for good. How are you getting on?

Excellent video... again! I have had severe fatty liver with jaundice. my liver variables now are normal thanks to HK and IF. thanks doc!. MILK THISTLE RECOMMENDED!!!!
How long to reverse your condition
I dont get it... if you fast for 18 hours because that is when autophagy begins, then it only follows that once you eat the autophagy process will stop. So you fast for 18 hours, authophagy begins, but then you break your fast by eating, so autophagy stops. Am i missing something? Doesn't that mean that we need to fast much longer than 18 hours since autophagy is just getting started at that time??
ok how about a methadone patient who has been on it lomg term? who also has liver disease. its one thing to become an addict. but a lot of addicts have the urge to still live as healthy as possible (even when having scars.) any videos regarding this would be great.
p.s is it even fair possible to go on a keto diet????
I tried that Marmite nutritional yeast stuff. Intense taste, gives me the wiggles like I'm on the dance floor getting tickled.
Hmmm makes sense on the zinc. Iâve had white spots on my nails and little by little theyâre going away.
Good morning gratitudes.
Dr. Eric, you da man!
I was wondering I'd you could answer this question... when I first started extended fasting I was cold during my fasting time... now I'm no longer cold? Is there a reason for this? Am I still burning fat even though I'm not cold?
try h2 and hho water
it will reduce or negate alcohol damage
but need about 10+ cups a day
I'm watching this drinking a single malt whiskey...but I am going through a difficult time. I did stop drinking, until life got tough. Sigh. I'll have to get on the wagon again.

Love alcohol , particularly Guinness, being Irish âïž I have a big tolerance for alcohol. In todayâs world I need a big release

As an alcoholic, I agree.

Will you do a presentation on Ayahuasca and DMT?
Dear doctor also please make a vedio regarding tamarind and it's benefits for lever.
16 years behind me lets go xD. Used all mentioned here for 3 months kek ^^
14 years.
Had a Greek salad. Just a cheap grocery store prepared one but wholey moley it was yummy. After gym I buy salad and a can of sardines. Not sure if recommended but also 600ml to a litre of milk.
Maybe I have to eat heaps, especially on days have cravings or know my mood will be low. With the added exercise and not getting a bunch of calories from beer really have to pay attention to getting enough alcories and nutrients. I've noted I crave nice food mostly rather than beer or a buzz.
For the list on the left side do these need to be taken by supplements individually/multi vitamin or will we be getting those through the food list in the middle.
I would add Garlic, Beetroot and Milk Thistle to the list.
I have been struggling for years I just hit week number three on Friday and I have only had two cravings I don't know what made me decide to quit after Decades of heavy drinking and almost out on the street
i've been trying to quit but dealing with the most horrible esopagheal spams, they make life so difficult, can't even drive cuz every 7 seconds i feel like i'm having a heart attack and gonna pass out and crash, and the stress of that makes it even worse. this sucks :( i wanna stop!!!
So basically go towards a pescatarian diet. Ironically I was gonna change to an ovo lacto pescatarian diet. I didnât want to limit myself just wanted to be more aware of what I was eating being on a new diet makes me do that.
Can you help with GOUT? Husband is in so much pain.
constant battle with my inner demons, little by little getting to where I want to be.
Thanks:)
Havenât drank since Feb 8th or around that time and donât want to drink any more
I really underestimated the effects of alcohol on the body! It was much easier for me to drink abnormal amounts of alcohol bevause I have always had a high tolerance for it and never have I woken up hangovered or puked out the alcohol. After a period of 8 months drinking heavily I was deficient in nearly all vitamins, with the biggest defiencies in B1 (thiamine), folic acid and vitamin D and C. Because of the deficiency i developed neurological problems that started in the feet and were spreading all over the body, i lost sense in my feet because of damaged nerves and my muscles would randomly spasm in my calves, upper leg, face, neck, abdomen. I have quit drinking for 4 months now and ive been taking extra vitamins for 6 months now and i am still low in vitamins and recovering! Its a relief te nerves can heal and i dint have this problem anymore (thank God) also becahse i am still young the nerves were able to recover. Please be careful and aware of what can happen to your body, in the end it drinking so much really isnt worth it.
