There's a video on CZcams of SRV and his band on some daytime talk show, and eventually he whips out a guitar and starts playing it. But the guitar is a gibson Flying V, of all things. And somehow he makes it sound like a strat when he's playing it. He's playing a mahogany guitar with 2 humbuckers and yet it still sounds like SRV. I always thought the "tone is in the fingers" thing was nonsense until I saw that video. He made a flying V sound like a strat. It's crazy
Tone isn’t in his Stratocaster(s) or his Doctored 1964 Fender Vibroverb or his Dumble Steel String Singer, his Vox King Wah, his MXR Loop Selector (AB Box/line splitter), either of his two Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamers (he had one on each side of the line splitter set the same way)… his tone was is in head
@@lect0n7 very nice run down on well know equipment but you left out his (tattered duct taped stitching cord....& 13 gauge strings...too . which only thing I could think of would be bringing the voltage and watts down just a little bit..
@@lect0n7 totally depends on which year he was playing. He only occasionally stacked the tube screamers, and most of his '83 gigs he only played with one
holy FUCK that just explodes when stevie starts ripping at the end, totally transformed the song. You know you're watching someone very special when you hear that.
Jimmy and Stevie just exude Texan like an an armadillo eating a bbq sandwich. Their styles were different and stevie’s seems more technical usually, but there’s something retro and just cool about Jimmy’s stage presence and playing.
I wish there was more footage of Stevie shredding on a tele. That sounded amazing. I am a blues player and I play a MIM 72 Thinline Reissue. Tele's can wail and just aren't for country.
Jimmie thought he'd close the song with a little behind-the-head flash, and Kim was bringing the song to a close, but SRV wasn't about to let that happen without some of his own flash lol.
Look at Stevie's face after Kim leans in, a bit after 3:52. That solo he took was a big F you to Kim Wilson, not to Jimmy. I guarantee it. Probably for restraining his older brother in the Thunderbirds. Kim thinks he's f'ing Elvis, here.
Didn't Stevie once punch Kim Wilson in the face because of it? It's been like 15 years since I read that biography of SRV but I seem to remember that happening at some point. Although I also remember he punched his brother too. Maybe I'm confusing the two incidents or maybe it was just the one incident.
proof tone is in the fingers. sounded like stevey from the jump. even on a tele. i really believe his tone is mostly in his picking hand. believe me im no SRV. but i have extremely heavy picking hand and my musician and non musician friends say i sometimes sound SRV LIKE. (obviously i am no where close or will ever top the legend) but its all about that heavy picking hand.
I agree, for the most part. Not just a heavy hand, but always raking. A lot of he sound is in the other strings that are struck but may be heavily muted, somewhat muted, somewhat audible and maybe with one or more of any of those bent slightly or more depending on what he's going for. Always getting that 'thrashing/choking' sound out of the Strat.
I agree to a degree, I'd started on strat, now Im tele player and whenever I get my hands on sg or prs... Lemme out it like this, always suprised how much of Tone is in person
@@---hu6ek i like kim wilsons voice but i wouldnt say he was a better singer than stevie. Stevie often has his voice overlooked, but his voice was more versatile than kims. Still, the tbirds wouldnt sound the same without him
It's called love & admiration for his big bro. Look at his pride and joy when Jimmie goes full tilt. He couldn't help himself. He wants to do what big brother does. And Jimmie backs him up with the shout out!! It's not an upstage, it's a special moment!!

Legends Kim Stevie And Jimmie. My hero’s
Love this.Lived in Austin and Loved The CRAWL. Such fun at the FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS RIVERFESTS.✌️
More More!! Love these old club shows with Jimmie and Stevie: nostalgic good old days. RIP Stevie 🕊😎
jimmie turns it loose! vaughan brothers absolutely burning the place down
Love seeing the brothers played together
Stevie has such nuance. Miles of it. Thousands of bits of nuance. I could hear his touch from the very beginning.
I have seen and rewatched this video dozens of times and I never get tired of it.
Stevie with the telecaster is awesome!!!
The best guitar player ever and his _little_ brother.
holy FUCK that just explodes when stevie starts ripping at the end, totally transformed the song. You know you're watching someone very special when you hear that.
When big brother Jimmie says go, Stevie GOES!!
Some people seem shocked the sound is coming from a tele. A lot of it is in the hands 👐. But the Telecaster is also a workhorse 🎸
SRV on a Telecaster! Stevie would sound good on a toy ukelele! No mistaking him no matter what he played. Jimmie was hottest I've seen him play too.
EPIC !!! Rock and roll doesn't get ANY better than THIS !!!
Makes me sad and happy at the same time

the good old days inn south Tejas !
Rocking the house and then it burst into flames! :)
SRV was just getting warmed up when Wilson said goodnight
I just love Jimmy ever since we lost SRV it's JV I listen to! This gentleman is so freaking talented 😻❤️ his unique style gets me pumping!!
Great performance what a band outtasight
THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!

I am so happy watching this...

Double Thunder!
In my T-Birds playlist with the studio version and the 1958 original by Guitar Jr. Not exactly a "brand new dance". Thanks for the upload!
Well, I'd pay good money for a real high quality recording of this...people would be dancing their butts off at my DJ gigs to this.
Incredible
I wish jimmy still played like that
Wow thanks for sharing. What a find....My main man Stevie Ray Vaughan, tearing it up!!! How young were we. Right?
Whoa!!
Only one ☝️ Stevie Ray Vaughan the star in this band
I LOVE SRV!!
So much for all the guff about needing a Strat to do SRV solos!!!
Love it ♥️
Lovestruck Baby
Awesome
Many do not know this but SRV learned to play on a Tele, not a Strat.
Yeah he regretted trading off that Nocaster, he even made an offer to anyone that owned it that he'd buy it off them but he never saw it again.
It was Tele that Jimmie Lee gave him. And pretty sure that's Jimmie's Tele he's playing in this footage.💗💗💗
That was Jimmy's telecaster
Keith Ferguson bass.

SRV sounding like Chuck Berry.
Nice compliment.
There are more songs from this night. Wonder what happened to the videos?
Keith on bass
Great performance, but I'm glad Kim lost the 70's wedding outfit!
stevie whith tele are strange no?
Teles are better

Stivie could have sung better than the other man .. Stevie Genius
The other man is Kim Wilson and, no, Stevie could not have sung better. He could sing, though.

What the hell was Jimmie thinking trying to showboat in front of his brother?!!!! SRV just ripped his face off! Have a seat big bro.

Stevie and Jimmie were brothers. Stop comparing the two. As said by Jimmie, the world misses his music but he misses his brother.
