  • Detroit, Michigan, USA - 1994 United States Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Free Skate - Tonya Harding won the Free Skate to win the National Title. However, as the year progressed and investigations proved that Tonya had knowledge of the planned attack on Nancy Kerrigan and failed to report it to the authorities. Because of her involvement, the USFSA voted to strip her of the title and opted not to award it to Michelle Kwan, who placed 2nd here.

It would appear now that she knew that they were up to something but didn't know exactly what and couldn't have done anything about it. And that's why I think she was able to skate as well as she did here. If she had known, I think her unconscious would have caused her to make errors. Then she was basically subjected to guilt by association.

Anyone else think that Tonya was really coming into her prime during 1994? It’s so sad what happened to her. I feel like she was finally coming into her own as far as adulthood and had built the courage to stand up to Jeff and remove him completely from her life. You can also see how muscular she is and how defined her triples were becoming. And just as she is truly getting her life together and getting rid of the wrong people, she gets dragged into a horrible event with horrible people that I believe she had no knowledge of. It’s disappointing, because even though her triple axels took her to the top initially, I feel like we’d have seen a fully mature, well-rounded skating champion if she’d been allowed to continue competing throughout the rest of the 90’s. It’s evident that she no longer relied just on her triple axel anymore but that she was maturing in all jumps and artistry. If you ask me...Tonya Harding got her best years of figure skating taken away from her because the best was yet to come. Picture a calm, happy Tonya with only good people around her at the 1998 olympics. Or even the 1994 Olympics if all this tragedy hadn’t stripped her confidence from her. Hard work wasted in reaching full physical and mental maturity. Anyone agree?

What should Tonya ask to be forgiven for? She didn't hit Kerrigan, her husband's idiot friend did. The only thing she needs to ask forgiveness for is for stupidly trying to cover for her husband when she found out what he'd done, which she acknowledges was a dumb move, and has apologised for. But considering her husband's record of violence, I can honestly understand why she did. The people who really ought to be asking for forgiveness is the skating world. They all KNEW her husband was beating seven bells out of her, and nobody did a damned thing. Not. One. Person. How do they sleep at night, I wonder?

All this new found sympathy for Harding, probably stems from the movie, I,Tonya, which depicted Tonya as a victim who did not know the extent of her husband’s plans for Kerrigan. The movie left out the most damning evidence which spoke to Tonya’s guilt. But, I suspect this is due to the fact that the ‘truth’ wouldn’t sell as much as fiction, as the Hollywood formula for making a successful movie requires a lead character the viewers are sympathetic towards.
Anybody who thinks Tonya didn’t know her husband’s true plans for Kerrigan, go watch a documentary, read a book, or just research it online.
What convinced me was the FBI stating that they believed she knew of the attack (prior), they had evidence, but w/out a confession, that evidence wouldn’t be enough for a conviction. I still remember seeing a pic of that wadded up piece of paper (that was thrown away but later retrieved from the trash and given to FBI’, it was in Tonya’s handwriting, had Kerrigan's training schedule and times (while she was training in MA), and there were these ‘doodle’ drawings of a ice skate (done in feminine writing style). All that feminine, flowery, and loopy handwriting and doodling did not look like anything a man (namely Harding’s husband or hired goons would do).
Then, there was the employee at the Tony Kent Arena (Kerrigan’s home rink), who told the FBI that a woman had been calling (more than once) to ask for Kerrigan’s scheduled training times, the FBI believed the female caller to have been Harding, but w/out a confession, it couldn’t be proven. The FBI had the confession from Shawn Eckwart, that the attack on Kerrigan was to be done at Kerrigan’s rink in MA.
Overall, if the FBI’s gut feeling is that Tonya knew about the attack, and the people guilty of the attack made it clear that she knew, then she probably had a hand in it all. Tonya had motive, she being in the business of amateur skating was the one who put the theory in Gilooly’s head that Kerrigan was her main problem (due to judges favoritism). And if Kerrigan didn’t compete, that meant the potential for lucrative endorsements for Tonya. That was the flawed and untrue mindset that launched the whole thing from the beginning. Harding and company didn’t factor in Tonya’s international competition, like Oksana Baiul.

    • @falconeddie4109
      @falconeddie4109 Před 2 lety +2

Moreover, if you’re Tonya Harding, and your misguided scheme to keep Kerrigan out of the 1994 National Championships and Olympics does not go as planned, would there be anything to gain (ice skating career wise) by confessing to have been knowledgeable of the attack before it happened? The answer is, no, because had she admitted her involvement from the start, she would have been branded as the worst competitive athlete in history. Even her fans would have turned their backs on Tonya, it would have been a far worse disaster for her to tell the truth.

The real problem with the controversy was that it was such a load of trailer trash stuff. It offended the sensibilities of just about everyone in the sport. Then when her prior knowledge of it came out, she was done. She already had proceedings before the IOC going at the time of the 1994 Olympics, and I think that the word was already out. They just weren't going to risk sending her home with a medal knowing that they were so likely to have to strip her of it in a couple of months. She had simply stopped being worth the headache. A tragedy because she truly was a champion.

What saddens me is that skating was literally the only thing she knew how to do. She'd dropped out of high school to focus on skating, and she'd never had a full time job due to training, so she had no other skills. She wasn't even allowed to teach or coach, or even to sharpen skates at a rink. And stripping her of the medals she'd won BEFORE the attack was just plain spiteful, she won those fair and square. What they did to Tonya had nothing to do with justice, it was petty revenge.

Even back in 1994, I felt bad for Tonya when the media came down on her after the Nancy Kerrigan incident. Now, as I look back on old clips of performances and interviews, I still see that she lacked support, both within the skating world and in her personal life. If I could change two things about her career, it would be for her to earn a medal at the 1992 Olympics and then to have not received a lifetime ban. Still, I think it gets overlooked that despite the forces going against her, she accomplished way more than most skaters-even extremely talented and well-supported skaters-ever will. @chocolatesupport Před 8 lety +32

+Chris Coyne Exactly, and with all the real trash out there today who get away with things, Tonya's banning is uncalled for. But it only proves that from the start when she started to rise in the skating ranks, she had no chance from the start. The USFSA - her own federation - didn't like her because she was white (anglo saxon) but poor with a broken home. Meanwhile Midori Ito, who is her equivalent internationally (but even better) was supported completely early on by her own Japanese federation because they saw right away that they had a very unique and revolutionary gem who was Midori, in their own country at that moment. It's not difficult to see when the situation arises.

During her free skate at the 1991 Skate America, he was super enthusiastic about her jumps and said something like, “No one’s going to beat this program.” Also, at the 1992 Olympics he says he thinks she should have placed higher than Midori Ito after the original program. I think if the knee business wouldn't have happened, Tonya would've won at least the silver here but probably the gold with this performance, a gold for sure with the triple axel even if Kerrigan skated her LP perfectly. Nancy Kerrigan was never a consistent skater and I think getting hit in the knee and having her focus be on rehab actually helped her to do as well as she did at the Olympics--that was only one of two clean LPs I had ever see her do. But had Tonya gone to the Olympics and skated like this, she would've come away with at least the bronze. With the triple axel and given the performances Nancy and Oksana did that night, she would've definitely had a silver, maybe even the gold--though I think that would've been a stretch (assuming she skated a clean SP) b/c Nancy and Oksana would've scored better artistically. I don't wish to be mean to women with less "shape" but I never thought super skinny legs were sexy. They look like kids legs. To each his own but she's not fat for heavens sake.

LGL Being thin doesn't mean you don't have a "shape". She isn't fat, she is definitely muscular and has a wider body frame. She could definitely have both fat and muscle, she looks great, fit and strong to me. And your ex boyfriend calling you fat at 129 lbs depends on how was your body fat composition and how was fat settling in your body.

You don't have to belittle and bully thinness to prove your point.

Reelz TV ran a special on her that says there was not only handwritten note, which matched hers, with the name and phone where Kerrigan practiced, but also phone records at the exact time of the attack (when she said she was sleeping) and interviews with personnel at the rink that put together a very strong if circumstancial case. Kerrigan said the FBI told her she was involved. The Portland DA opted to take a plea deal rather than go through an expensive trial. Scott Hamilton said recently that she bit every hand that fed her and that they both had some of the same financial sponsors. She had at least one endorsement as national champion. I remember seeing the ad. She also got financial help from George Steinbrenner who she thanked publicly. She brought herself down. Afterward she was free to do anything else... go back to school, etc. If fully prosecuted, she could have gone to jail.

I always thought her Ina Bauer and her spins were awesome. I don't think people give enough credit for those portions of a program.

A very athletic woman. She should have a cushy job with a skating show today with all her abilities. One mistake and a lifetime of penalty.

I agree, she was old enough to know better! What a coward.......and still walking around saying she knew nothing of the 'plan'. BS......if she was smart she would own up to it, .......that would also guarantee her interviews and maybe even endorsements, but her lack of class, integrity, and her huge ego won't allow it.

      RachelDavisMatthews who cares.
I don't think she has an ego. I think she legitimately doesn't comprehend what happened.
She grew up in a world where she was beaten by her mother and husband and was basically forced to marry to have a roof over her head. Aside from "comped" coaching (where they got publicity), she got very little help financially.
She knew about a plot where the girl got bruised in the knee. She was 23, she didn't hold the baton, and ultimately there was almost no real physical harm.
She's not "smart enough," she had to quit school at 16. She just lives her backwoods life. I hope one day people realize that her triple axel is far more impressive than her bungled supposed conspiracy to bring Nancy down. Her life is proof that no matter what some people can achieve, their "status" in life will always hold them back.
